I haven’t heard from Mason since our night together, well okay I have, I just never answered the phone when he called.  I haven’t tried to reach out to him, either. It’s not like I know what to say. Is there anything to say after that disaster? He called out her name. I know she was his wife, but she’s gone. I know he loved her and always will, but doesn’t he have room for me in that heart of his?

I go through the motions at work. My head turns every time I hear a motorcycle, wondering if it is him.

Finally, he sends me a text, inviting me to his place. I don’t know how to feel about it… him… everything, but we need to talk.  The past month, we have had this intense on again off again relationship. Some days, we are so good, and others, he goes distant again.

I pull up to Mason’s house and feel slightly weird. He shared this home with his wife. Will he feel awkward having me here? Last time, it didn’t go so well.

I don’t even get to knock on the door before it swings open, and Mason is standing there, shirt off, sweaty and grinning at me.

“Hunter’s in the living room, playing with some toys. I just need to finish up in the kitchen.”

When I walk in, the smell of garlic and Alfredo hits my nose. He cooked? For me? Holy shit! He is really making an effort.

I grin at Hunter as he bangs his car on the top of a ball.

I am nervous Mason will freak if I get too close to him again, but he is so dang cute, grinning at me with his toothy slobbery smile. How can I deny him my attention? I sit in the floor with him and speak softly, not to attract Mason. “Hey, little man. I’m Moira. I am a friend of your dad’s, and I hope we can be friends, too.”

Surprisingly, I look up to see Mason smiling at us. “Grab Hunter. Food’s ready.”

I nod. Okay. He is in a good mood. This is going good. We sit down at the table; Hunter is to his left in his highchair, and I am on his right.

“This is great.” I compliment his culinary skills.

He takes my hand. “I’m sorry for what happened. I didn’t mean it. I guess I am just used to her. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

I know he is sorry, and I knew coming in that this would be hard. I have to give a little, too, if I want this. “I don’t like it, but I understand. She was your wife. We hardly know each other.”

The rest of the night goes smoothly. I even help him get Hunter bathed, and I read him a story until he falls asleep in my arms.  I could get used to this. It’s nice. I know I can’t replace his mom, but I can be good to him, given the chance.

His father takes him from my arms and places him snuggly in his crib.

I follow Mason into the kitchen and offer to help clean up, but he tells me he has a lady who comes over a few times a week to keep up with the house for him. I can tell by the gleam in his eye that he has other plans. I am just not so sure it is a good idea, considering the last time we were romantic.

He cups my face, being gentle. “I do want to see where we can go, but, woman, we have got to go slow.” He senses my hesitancy when he kisses me. “Give me a chance to make it right. I can make it good for you.” I can’t help but give in. Something pulls me to him, and I need him just as much as he needs me.

And God does he make it good. Thirty minutes later, I am sated, lying in his arms, and it was my name he called out when he came deep inside my walls.

Two months later

I’m finishing up my shift, which was awkward as hell because my ex-husband and his new wife started working today. I haven’t run into them in town, so I thought maybe they changed their minds about coming here, but they didn’t, because poof – they are standing in front of me.

“Moira,” Sam says quietly.

I give him a chin lift. Hmm, Mason is rubbing off on me.

His new wife elbows him and glares. “Moira, hey, this is weird, trust me, I know, but Sam has groveling to do,” she says, sharply glaring at her husband.

My brows go up, and then I see him, Mason, coming up behind them. “Hey,” I say, a grin lighting up my face.

“Babe,” he says, stepping around them, coming at me. Lifting me slightly, he plants one on me, hard, soft, and with loads of tongue.

When we part, I get worried. I haven’t told him yet about my ex-husband.

I look to Sam, who is looking highly upset and hurt. I look to his wife, and she is grinning huge and looks genuinely happy for me.

“Uh, Mason, this is Sam, my ex-husband, and um, I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name,” I say, wincing in her direction.

She chuckles softly. “It’s okay, dear. It’s Lenora.”

“Ex-husband?” Mason questions.

I look up at him and whisper, “I’ll explain everything later.”

He nods then holds out his hand to Sam and Lenora for them to shake.

“Well, uh, Moira, we’ll let you get on with the rest of your day. We just wanted to come over and say hi,” Sam says. He looks to the floor and then back up at me, whispering, “I’m happy for you, darling, and I’m still very sorry.”

Mason tenses at his words, and I nod to Sam. His wife gives me a smile and walks around us with Sam to get back to work. Well, that was somewhat strange.

Mason and I walk out to my car, hand in hand, discussing our lunch plans. We decide on Rachel’s Diner. He follows behind me on his bike, although I have to keep watching my rear-view mirror, because with the snow on the ground, I’m worried he’s going to wipe out.

Over lunch, Mason wants to talk about Sam, but I am not in the mood. I’m still in shock over seeing him.  I am not hung up on him or anything; it’s just weird. Mason isn’t happy.

“We’ll talk about this later.” He kisses my cheek, and I hope my reluctance hasn’t pushed him away. He has to go run some errands and pick up Hunter.

I tell Mason I’ll meet him at his house a little later, and end up stopping at the bakery, which is now called Eden’s Place, before going to his place.

“Moira.” My name is called as I’m carrying out a box of donuts. Turning around, I see that it’s Eden.

“Hi,” I say, smiling.

“Can we talk?”

I have a feeling this won’t be good, but I nod and follow her to the back room.

“Have a seat,” She says, so I do. “You’re still with Mason.” She says it as a statement more than a question.

“Yes, I am.”

She rubs her face. “Why?”

I frown at her. “Look, I’m not sure what your deal is with me, or what your deal is with thinking you have an opinion on who Mason dates, but you need to get over it,” I tell her.

“I know. I know that. It’s just hard. You’re not Hilary,” she says, slumping.

“Um, I know that. I don’t want to be Hilary.” She flinches, but I don’t care at this point. “Why would I want to be her?”

“They were supposed to be together, not you two. I can’t get over this.”

I stand up and stare her down. “You aren’t going to run me off, Eden. I’m not Hilary. Hilary is not here. I’m with Mason now. Learn to live with it, or don’t. I don’t care either way. But you are not tearing me down over this.”

I walk away from her and get into my car. For a moment, I feel like maybe I should have thrown a donut at her, but then, that might have started some sort of catfight, and that’s just not me.

I get to Mason’s house, and after Hunter goes to bed, we sit on his couch. “Okay, start talking about this ex-husband stuff.”

“It’s really not much, but we were married, until we weren’t. He would cheat on me often, so often I’ve lost count. The first two times I caught him, I was pregnant, only about four or so weeks. Each time I’d get so upset, I’d drink, not even thinking. I lost both babies.” Mason tenses next to me. “The last time I caught him cheating on me, I had enough, because the woman he cheated on me with was an actual honest to God hooker,” I say, shivering.

“Did you know any of the women?” he asks me.

“I have no clue who any of them were, honestly, just the last one. Girl named Lacey.”

Mason tenses. “Shit, I know Lacey.”

I look at him, and he looks slightly worried. “Oh?”

“Fucked her, years ago, but I did. Not my finest moment.”

I want to be angry and jealous, because that whore has now fucked both men who have ever meant something to me.

“I want to say I am okay with that. I am, but I’m not. I know you were married before, as you now know I was, too. I won’t let my hate of her get in our way. I want us to have a fresh start. No bad clouding up our good.”

“If you can look past it, I can, too.” He grabs my face, kissing me hard.

His kisses get me so wet and ready. I swear, I have never been so sexually attracted to anyone before, but it isn’t just the physical. Mason gets me and I get him. I just have to find a way to tell him the thing I found out this morning. I’m scared. We haven’t been together long enough. He just lost his wife, and I’m worried that when I share it with him, we’ll be over.

I shake the thoughts off. “Take me to bed so we can start on the good.”

He smiles, and I lead him down the hall. I am down on my knees by the edge of the bed. Mason growls the instant my mouth caps over his length, sucking him hard.

Lying in bed with Moira, her tracing the tats on my chest with her finger, I sigh in relief. I feel content, finally. Never thought I could feel this way again.

“Um, Mason?” Moira asks hesitantly.

“Yeah, babe?” I look at her to see her staring at me, eyes looking a bit scared.

“I need to tell you something,” she says, and then bites her lip.

I narrow my eyes. “What’s wrong?”

“I, um, well, I’m scared to tell you.”

I squeeze her slightly and urge her to just spit it out.

“I’m pregnant, Mason,” she finally blurts out.

Blood drains from my face, and I shove her away from me. I sit on the edge of the bed, my head in my hands. “Get out,” I growl at her.

“Mason,” she starts, placing a hand on my shoulder.

I shrug her off and stand up, facing her. “Get the fuck out of my house.”

Her face pales. “Mason, just talk to me please.”

“You do this to trap me, force me to move on from Hilary? Was that your plan all along?”

“Mason, don’t be like this.”

“Fuck you, bitch. Get the fuck out of my house!” I yell at her. She shrinks back, scared. Good. Her bottom lip quivers. Fuck, she is going to cry.

“You know that’s not what I did, Mason. I didn’t lie when I said I went on the pill after our first time together.” She tries reasoning with me, and I lose it.

I grab her by the face, squeezing. “You think I would ever stay with someone like you for long? Huh? You are not my wife. You will never be like her. Ever.” I shove her back, and she falls to the floor. Fuck, I’m an asshole, but right now, I don’t care. “You’re a good fuck, babe. You help me pass the time so I don’t have to use my hand, but every time I fucked you, I pictured fuckin’ my wife. Why do you think that first time I called out her name, not yours?”

Tears fall from her eyes, and she gets up quietly from the floor, pulling on her clothes. She leaves without a word or another glance at me.

She slams the front door, and Hunter starts screaming. I sit on the bed and rub the back of my neck. Fuck, I put my fuckin’ hands on her. Shit, shit, shit! I knew I was no good. I’m scum. No wonder Hilary left me all those years ago.

I’m still that same piece of shit. What the fuck is wrong with me? Cold wraps around my neck, and I feel as if the life is being choked out of me. I sit up, looking around the room. I need out of this house, I need to move, this house, Hilary’s house, is suffocating me.
