“Hey baby, relax its ok. Just the first visit, normal stuff ok?”

He smiled and kissed my lips. “Let’s do this.”

I gave the receptionist my name
inside and I filled out a few papers. Make that a lot of papers. The waiting room smelt relaxing. I loved the smells and feels of a doctor’s office. The brown chairs were so comfortable I almost wished we could do everything out here. I was bound to get stares that way but it would be ok. Just as I was really settled and comfortable, the nurse called my name. I squeezed Trevor’s hand letting him know everything was just fine and we walked to the back. She did the routine blood pressure check and she asked a few more questions then told me the doctor would be right in.

Dr. Riley looked to be about in his mid 40‘s, the same age as my Uncle Gary. He warmly greeted us and congratulated us on expecting our first child.
We sat there beaming like any proud parents to be would. I sat on the big table trying to get comfortable and he began explaining how we were going to try to hear the baby’s heartbeat through my belly and if we couldn’t he’d have to do it vaginally. I prayed we wouldn’t have to do that. He squirted the ultrasound goo onto my belly. It was so cool, I jumped. Trevor jerked his head to me then when he realized it was just the goo that made me jump, he held my hand and sat beside me and we watched Dr. Riley move the wand looking for our baby. There was silence as we watched the screen and then suddenly, we heard it. The heartbeat was strong. It brought immediate tears to my eyes and even Trevor had a tear sitting in his. This was an absolute miracle. This had to be true love right here. This moment. Staring at our baby on this little screen, nothing else mattered. We continued staring at the screen at our baby who was no bigger than a small peanut.

“You obviously are very early in your pregnancy
Ms. Young, but here is your baby. I’ll take a picture of this screen for you to take home and we will see you again in about a month. Here’s a checklist of medicines that are acceptable to take and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call before your next appointment. Either the nurse of myself are more than happy to answer any of your questions or handle any concerns you may have.”

He printed the picture and handed it to us. This was very much real. Trevor kissed me and then kissed my belly. We walked out of our exam room and I paid the receptionist and scheduled our next appointment.

We walked hand in hand to the car, both of us with smiles plastered to our faces. We sat inside and Trevor placed his hand on my stomach and then looked into my eyes. “Macy, I can’t tell you how happy you’ve made me and this,” He grabbed our baby’s picture and smiled, “this makes me love you so much more.” I had no idea where he was going with this, but I listened giving him my full attention. “I know this is really soon, we haven’t even been together six months yet but we’re having a baby. We made a baby. And I love you more than you could ever imagine. I’m sorry I keep babbling but what I’m really trying to say is,” He placed the picture in my lap and grabbed my hand. “Will you marry me? I’m not asking just because you are pregnant, please don’t think that, I, just, I can’t imagine my life without you and we’re going to be a family and...”

Christ he was going to keep babbling. I grabbed his face and stared into those bluish gray eyes I loved, “Yes Trevor. I will marry you.”

A tear fell from his eye and he hugged me. “You have no idea how happy you’ve just made me. I’m not trying to put a sour note on this for us, but we’re going to have to tell Gary.”

Shit. I had forgotten all about that. But Trevor was right. He was going to have to find out soon and we were going to have to tell him. “
We will talk to him and get it straightened out but for right now, let’s go home.”

“Wait, you need a ring my wife to be.”

“Trevor, I don’t have to have one right this minute. It’s ok I promise.”

“No, don’t argue with me. I want to do this. Let me do this for you.”

He really could make me blush. We drove to Molly’s Trinkets and Things where my bracelet came from. He opened my door for me and we walked inside. He grabbed a charm shaped like a baby carriage and we approached the counter where the rings were. He began looking at solitaire diamonds. We tried on a few and finally found the perfect one. It wasn’t too big or too small. It was perfect. He paid the lady and walked outside.

“This charm is for our baby, who I can’t wait to meet. And,” He got down on one knee in the middle of the sidewalk where people were beginning to stop and watch us. Crap. “Macy, I already asked but I’m asking again. Will you marry me? Because I’m crazy about you and I can’t imagine life without you or our baby?”

As bad as I hated being put on the spot, I grinned and replied, “Yes, I will marry you.” He scooped me up and kissed me. The crowd that had formed around us cheered and we waved to them. We stood there on the sidewalk holding each other for a minute or two more as if nothing else mattered in this world. We broke our embrace and got back in the car and continued home.

As Trevor opened the door for me, I tried to figure out the best way to tell Halley I was engaged. She was going to absolutely die and probably threaten me to be my maid of honor. I mean really? Like there could possibly be anyone else. We opened the door and she immediately ran up to me. “How was the appointment?”

“Everything was good. We heard its heartbeat. Look here’s our baby.” I handed her the ultrasound pic in a way she was sure to notice the ring but she didn’t seem to notice.

“Ohmigod how tiny!!” She showed Marcus then handed it back. Her eye caught my ring and she pulled my hand towards her. “OHMIGOD!!!! When did this happen?!”

Trevor spoke up for me, “It just happened maybe a few minutes ago.” He and Marcus did the bro hug and wandered off so Halley and I could talk.

“Macy I am so happy for you! Look at you turning into quite the young woman! I know I better be in your wedding!” See, I already knew that was coming.

“Of course, what kind of stupid question is that!” I hugged her tight. I still expected all of this to be a dream. Things were going too good but I swore not to think too much on it.

“So, um are you supposed to be working tonight? Because you know you can’t drink.” She made a very good point. I needed to get back down to earth and deal with real life. I still had to tell Uncle Gary too. I had no idea how that was going to go. Asking to date me was one thing, but for Trevor to say hey man I knocked up your niece and now we’re getting married, that was a totally different ballpark.

“Shit, yes I do. Gary doesn’t know Hales, I guess I need to go see him now and tell him. He has to hear it from me. I hope he doesn’t get mad.”

“Go see him now. I don’t think he will be mad. You just need to sit down with him and let him know the plan you guys have. He will understand I’m sure.” She always knew what to say. We walked to meet Marcus and Trevor and I whispered to Trevor that we needed to go see Gary like now, before tonight. After making sure we had what we were going to say, we got in our car and took what seemed like the longest drive ever. And Gary literally lived ten minutes from me.

“How do you think he’ll take the news Mace?”

“I hope not bad. I mean he’s hearing it first from us so it’s got to be a good sign right?”

He squeezed my hand reassuringly. “Yes baby. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

We pulled up at Gary’s house. He was still home. His truck was sitting in the driveway and he was standing outside so it was too late to try to back out now. He waved to us as we got out the car. My palms were sweaty and I tried my best to hide my ring so he didn’t see it right away. I was incredibly nervous, this was ridiculous. But a million questions were running through my head. What if he disowned me? Or fired me? Or plain just hated me? I wanted to disappear and we haven’t even said anything yet.

“Calm down Mace, it’s going to be ok.” Trevor whispered in my ear. I’m so glad he was confident because I was a mess.

“What are you kids up to? I don’t think I’ve ever had you two visit at the same time.” Gary already knew something was up. I could tell. “Come on in and have a seat.”

We sat on the couch and it felt like I were sitting on needles. That’s how bad my nerves were at the moment. “We just wanted to come by to visit Uncle Gary.”

I stared at his deer heads mounted on the wall and pictured my head being mounted right beside them after we made our announcement. Since he were my uncle I decided I needed to begin. “Well, we wanted to be the first to tell you, but I don’t want you to be upset, but it’s just..” Shit I was babbling uncontrollably and Gary was eyeing me suspiciously.

Trevor jumped in just as nervous but without all the babbling and replied, “Gary, sir, Macy and I are having a baby.”

Silence. Pure Silence. Uncle Gary was about to have both our heads mounted on the wall. I wondered if anyone would miss us.

“Is this true?” He looked at me and I grabbed the ultrasound picture for proof. He grabbed it from me and saw the ring. Ohmigod I’m about to be a dead woman. “Is this ring what I think it is?” I eyed his shot gun in the corner and all I could think about were the mounts.

“Yes sir. It is true. And I should have asked your permission first but I was just caught up in the moment and I asked her to marry me. I love her and I want to do this right. I want our family to be complete. That is of course, with your blessing.” I was forever indebted to Trevor because I was at a loss for words. It’s like my voice had gone away and I just sat there on the couch.

“Macy, I love you and if this is what you want I will not stand in your way but as your uncle I am here for you no matter what. Like I told you two before, you are grown adults and I trust your decisions. Come give me a hug, congratulations baby girl!”

I graciously hugged my Uncle Gary and held him tight. “Thank you for your blessing. It means the world to me.”

“Let me see this picture. Look how tiny it is.” Uncle Gary was in awe. I’d never seen him around kids before but I couldn’t wait for him to hold the baby when it was born. He handed the picture back and got serious. “I don’t know about you working in the bar anymore Macy. You can work there for now but once you start showing I don’t want you at risk of getting hurt and hurting that baby do you understand?”

I nodded and replied, “Yes sir.”

Trevor sat there listening and beaming. This was probably one of the happiest days of both of our lives. “Thank you Gary for everything. We owe you big time.”

Gary shook his head and laughed, “You two crazy kids don’t owe me a thing. Go enjoy the rest of your day before work and take it easy Macy.” I hugged him and Trevor shook his hand and we left.

“Ohmigod babe, that went so good! I can’t believe we have his blessing!” I leaned over and gave him a big kiss before we headed home.
Things were going so well for us I couldn’t believe it.

*******

All four of us rode to The Lounge together. The crowd was still small when we arrived so I was able to mingle with Halley before stepping behind the bar. Gary gave me a wink and walked into his office.

“I can’t believe how awesome he was with all the news.” Halley was
as excited if not more excited as I was.

Marcus and Trevor had
gone to begin setting up so they didn’t have to later. Trevor looked like a completely different man from where I stood. You know how they say the woman has the glow? It totally looked like he was glowing. He was so happy and so was I. They took less than ten minutes to set up and were back by us. Marcus wrapped his arms around Halley and they shared a kiss.

“Hey hey guys careful
that’s how babies are made!” Marcus punched Trevor in the arm and went back to kissing Halley. I laughed and laid my hand on my barely belly.

Trevor pulled me to the side and kissed my belly then my lips. “Take it easy tonight. If you start to feel bad or anything sit down.”

“Yes sir. I’m barely pregnant not about to pop. I’ll be ok I promise. I’ve got water to drink and you to listen to I’m good!” I kissed him to reassure him. He held me for a few minutes before letting me go.

I wanted to sing but I wasn’t sure what to sing tonight. Halley had just sat at the bar and saw the look on my face. “Are you constipated?
You know I hear that can happen when you’re pregnant.”

“Hell no! I was trying to think of something to sing.
And really Hales, that’s’ gross.” I was almost doubled over laughing. “Want to sing with me?”

“Depends what it is.” She eyeballed me trying to determine what I was about to throw her way.

“Girls just want to have fun?”

“HELL YES!” She grabbed my hand and practically drug me to the stage. I caught Marcus’s eye and he was laughing hysterically
at his crazy mess of a girlfriend.

She told the
DJ our choice and we jumped on stage. I figure since I was with child I needed to pack away the blue jean skirt so I wore my jeans and a fitted pink shirt. The popular Cyndi Lauper tune began and we danced while we sang our hearts out. We must have been thoroughly entertaining because the crowd was singing along with us. Hell even Marcus and Trevor were singing along on their stage. The crowd went wild when we were done and Halley and I thanked them. That was fun. I would miss this. I made my way behind the bar and began making drinks. It’s funny I would have normally been downing shots by now but I was perfectly content with my water. Halley kept me company at the bar while the guys were playing. She walked off to go to the restroom while I kept my post behind the bar. They did more covers and threw in a song by some new band that we’d recently begun hearing on the radio. They sounded better and better every time they played.  I finished grabbing four beers for a guy at the other end of the bar when I heard a voice say, “Well I was sure hoping not to have to see you again.”
