Chapter One

For the tenth time since she’d left work, Erica Neilson wondered what the heck she was doing. She sighed, spying the large group of people congregating around the bar at the local RSL club, her workmates’ favourite watering hole. She had her friend Nicole to thank for being there tonight. She scanned the group again, looking for her crazy friend, finding her towards the back of the room playing a lively game of darts with a couple of the new medical students. One of them checked her out with more than a little bit of interest. Erica looked him over and he wasn’t half bad.

Her friend always attracted men like flies. She loved her to pieces but she sometimes envied Nicole’s easy confidence and femininity that never failed to draw a crowd of appreciative males. Nicole’s face lit up with a mischievous grin while she flung her arms around her in a tight hug.

“You came,” she whispered in her ear before releasing her and stepping back.

“Of course I came. I promised I would.”

Nicole giggled. “Yeah, well, you weren’t too enthusiastic about it. I was expecting you to find some excuse and blow me off again.”

She blinked, remembering how she’d almost done exactly that, but since she’d stayed home the last two times Nicole had asked her to join them she’d figured she’d better bite the bullet this time.

Nicole laughed again, and winked at her. “Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me. I won’t tell Jack.”

Jack? Oh crap, I forgot it was his last day
. That’s why they had asked her to come. Thank goodness she’d given in to her guilt and had turned up. “I came because I didn’t want to let you down again. I’d forgotten all about Jack to be honest.” She smiled.

“It doesn’t matter why you’re here, sweetie. I’m just glad you are. You need to have some fun.”

“I have fun.”
Every night.
When I’m asleep.

Nicole coughed. “Sure you do, hun,” she said, handing over her darts to one of her adoring crowd. “But you need to start taking some chances. Take your clothes for instance.”

Erica looked down at her tidy grey business suit and plain black flats. “What’s wrong with my clothes? They’re my work clothes.”

“Sure, they’re very practical, but you could jazz them up a little, honey. You’ve got great curves. You should flaunt them a little.”

Erica blushed as Michelle, one of the nurses from the hospital where she worked, sidled up next to Nicole and joined in. “You sure do, sweetie. You need to stop hiding under all those boring old suits.”

Oh great.
Does everyone have an opinion on my life?
“I’m a manager. I have to look professional. This suit is my uniform.”

Nicole and Michelle shared a look before Nicole leaned in close to whisper. “Sure, honey, but there’s wearing a suit, and then there’s
wearing
a suit.”

“I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about.”

Nicole moved in front of Erica and undid the top three buttons of her blouse.

“Hey! What are you doing? This is a work function. I have a reputation to uphold.”

Nicole stepped back. Both she and Michelle stared at Erica, thoughtful looks on their faces.
So this is what a piece of meat feels like.

Her fingers reached up to redo the buttons, but Nicole swatted her hands out of the way. “No, honey, leave it as it is. Trust me, you look fabulous.”

She looked down at her ample cleavage, now on view for the entire world to see. “I seriously doubt that.”

Nicole laughed. “Sure you do, and with a few more touches, you’ll be the knockout I always knew you to be.”

Before she had a chance to ask what they had in mind Nicole had removed the pins from her tight bun and was shaking Erica’s long blonde curls around her shoulders.

Michelle produced a makeup bag and shuffled through the myriad of bottles and tubes. “You know, honey, you’d look really great in this new shade of lipstick I bought yesterday.”

Erica stepped back, her arms folded across her chest. “Hey, what is this? Let’s make over Erica night?”

“Why not. You’re always complaining that you never get to meet any guys. Here’s your chance.”

“It’s not my clothes. I just never have time to go out and meet anyone.”

Both her friends stared at her, their smiles frozen in exactly the same way. Erica gazed past them, noticing an appreciative look from a guy across the bar. He winked and saluted her with his glass. She blushed, turning away quickly.
Sheesh
. That had never happened before.

Okay, maybe they had a point about her clothes.

“All right then. Maybe I’m willing to admit I could do with a little brightening up.”

The other girls laughed as they dragged her towards the ladies’ room. “Cool,” said Nicole. “This is going to be so much fun.”

Erica’s head was spinning a short time later when she found herself standing in a group of gorgeous people, drinking and laughing more than she’d ever done in her life. Maybe it was the new look her friends had thrust upon her. More likely it was the third margarita she was sucking through a straw like a Slurpee. She’d discovered that she didn’t even have to say all that much when half her boobs were hanging out of her blouse. Funnily enough the men were falling over themselves to speak to her. Considering she wasn’t showing any of her usual reticence, it must have been at least in part owing to the margaritas, but she really did feel different.

What the heck, she was having fun. She tapped Nicole on the shoulder, gesturing for her to join her in a recently vacated booth.

As Nicole sat down opposite her, Erica grasped her hand. “Thanks for a great night, Nic. You’re a good friend, you know that?”

“Hey, no worries, sweetie. You deserve some fun.”

“Yes, I am having fun. Who would have thought?”

“Yeah, who woulda?” Nicole giggled, as they clinked glasses. “I always knew you had it in you, and not just because of the margaritas. Just make sure you hold on to the new attitude, okay?”

“A few exotic drinks and letting my hair down on one occasion doesn’t really count as a life change, Nic, so I can’t promise I won’t go back to my old boring ways.”

Nicole gave her a wicked smile. “Not to worry, my friend. I have an idea that will blast those boring ways out of the water for good. Are you game?”

“Stop smirking at me, you’re making me nervous!”

“C’mon Erica. Play along, it’ll be fun.”

“I have a feeling I’m going to regret this,” she said before picking up her glass, draining the last of it and slamming it down on the table. “What did you have in mind?”

Nicole leant back against her seat. “For this to work you have to promise me you won’t back out on me.”

Erica laughed. “Now you’re really making me nervous.”

Her friend’s expression was serious. “You’ll just have to trust me. Would I ask you to do anything I wouldn’t do myself?”

A large flock of butterflies took up residence in Erica’s stomach, but one look at her best friend’s mischievous grin and she couldn’t refuse her. Not this time. Besides, she’d had fun so far tonight, hadn’t she? “Okay.”
Gulp
. “I think.” As her mother used to say—
in for a penny in for a pound.
She took a deep breath and spoke quickly before she changed her mind. “All right, let me have it. What do I have to do?”

“I was thinking of a little wager.”

“What? You mean a bet?”

“Bet, wager…the results are the same.”

“But why a bet? Why not just get me to do some little task?”

“Because a bet raises the stakes. Win or lose, it has more of an impact. Don’t look so worried. It’s just a little more incentive for you, sweetie.”

“I don’t know about this.”

“Oh come on, Erica. You can’t back out now, you agreed.”

She couldn’t resist her when she showed her that little girl pout. “Fine. So what do I have to do?”

“I’ve decided to add a bit of competition into the mix now that I’ve got your attention.” She checked her wristwatch. “Your task is simple. Okay, it’s nine thirty p.m. You have until ten thirty p.m. to pick a man you’ve never met before, grab him by the collar, and kiss him senseless.”

The blood rushed to Erica’s head until all she heard was the pounding of her pulse in her ears. Had Nic really just asked her to get up close and personal with a complete stranger? She reached out to take a sip of her drink, but her hand shook so much she gave up, putting her traitorous limb on her lap under the table.
Breathe. Just breathe.
“What happens if I don’t do it in time?”

“Oh this is the fun part. If you don’t make it in time, then I get to choose a suitable punishment.”
