Chapter 1

Nervously, Ashley rubbed her hands over her lap, thinking of her mother and praying to find her safe and sound, at the hospital. The taxi she was in dodged the city's traffic as best as it could, using the largest routes, but less congested ones, and doing acrobatics that made taxi drivers famous around town.  For a moment, she wished Jordan was there with her, supporting her through those hard moments. She was so scared for her mother, she couldn’t even think straight. Having Jordan next to her would be quite a comfort, even if her rational side kept telling her she shouldn’t be feeling this way about him, that he was keeping her prisoner, that he was a mobster, for god's sake. But her heart wanted nothing to do with her mind, and she could tell she was falling for him, for the amazing chemistry they conjured when they were together.

And right now, she craved for the sense of security he transmitted to her, to hear him say everything would be alright, that he was there for her and that she had nothing to worry about.

They were halfway there when she noticed a black SUV following the taxi, but she disregarded the idea, blaming it on paranoia, probably infected in her by Jordan, but she kept looking back and the SUV was always there. "Sir, am I imagining things or is that SUV following us?" she asked the driver.

"I don’t think it's your imagination, miss. But, I'll change course and we'll find out." The man said, as worried as she was. Kidnappings and robberies were very common in Caracas these days, but this SUV was worth too much money for it to belong to common thieves.

Worried, she picked up her cell phone from her purse and tried to call Jordan, with a bad feeling creeping inside her. She kept recalling his words about a number of enemies waiting for a mistake to hit him, or in this case, someone close to him. But the call didn’t go through. She attempted a few more times and nothing. The phone didn’t have any signal.

The driver took a sudden turn to his left and to their chagrin the SUV turned after them. "Oh god, this isn’t good." She said, starting to regret not having asked one of Jordan's men to take her to the hospital. "Can you get to a place with a lot of people?" she asked the driver.

"Yes, I was thinking of that, but there isn’t one nearby. Let's hope they don’t try to stop us." The man said, obviously scared, as he sped up the car.

But his prayers weren’t answered. Only a couple of minutes later the SUV passed them and closed the road forcing the driver to step on the breaks.

She tried to call Jordan once more and still nothing. She even called the police and no call was possible. Two men carrying rifles came out of the SUV and ran to the car. One of them was Sergeant Hernandez.

"Please, don’t put up any resistance." She begged the driver. By now, she knew they were after her, and the last thing she wanted was for the poor man to get hurt for her lack of judgment.

Hernandez opened up the back door and pulled her out of the car, wordlessly, dragging her to the SUV. Out of the corner of her eye, she was able to see the other man knocking out the taxi driver. She pulled her arm from Hernandez's clutches. "Do you think this is a good idea? Why are you doing this?" She ranted at the man.

"Shut up and get in the car. We don’t have much time." He shouted at her, pushing her roughly into the back seat of the SUV, jumping in right after her. The other man entered the vehicle too and in only a few seconds they were on their way.

"Where are you taking me? Who ordered you to do this?" she asked, unable to stay quiet, her mind swirling wildly as millions of ideas rushed through.

"I said shut up." Hernandez repeated pointing the rifle at her. "You'll find out soon enough."

"It was Nicholas Marquez, wasn’t it? Do you think it's a good idea to piss off Jordan Martinez? That Marquez will protect you from his wrath?" she insisted, not sure if she was afraid or just furious.

He threw himself over her, wrapping his hand around her neck, squeezing hard. "I was asked to deliver you as unharmed as possible, so don’t push me." He gave her a last squeeze before letting go of her neck, and punching her hard in her stomach, pushing all the air out of her lungs. "Just stay put."

Ashley moved over a bit further from the man, hugging herself, trying to breathe through the pain. She had to find a way to escape. Now, she was certain Hernandez was taking her to Nicholas Marquez. He didn’t have the power or the courage to act on his own against Jordan, so it had to be Nicholas. The simple idea made her cringe and wish desperately for a way out. She cursed herself for not calling Jordan before leaving the house, for falling into such a stupid trap. He surely would be mad at her for being so silly, that is if she ever got the chance to go back to him, to see his face again and feel his arms around her.

She looked out of the window to see where they were taking here, but she was unable to recognize the rural roads they were going through. After what seemed like more than two hours, they finally arrived at an iron gate, heavily guarded by two men carrying rifles. The gate was opened, and the SUV entered, driving for a few more minutes before it finally stopped in front of what looked like an abandoned house.

Hernandez hopped out of the car and dragged Ashley out of it, her hands squeezing her bag hard against her stomach as if her life depended on it while he took her inside the house and into one of the rooms. It looked pretty much like the cell Jordan had put her in back in Margarita, but this one was on the ground floor and had a small window, secured with heavy bars, quite similar to those used in a jail.

Hernandez pushed her inside the room and locked the door.

Hurriedly, Ashley opened her purse and looked for her cell phone. She almost started crying when she saw it had run out of battery, so there was no way she could call for help. She stashed her phone in one of the small pockets inside her purse, trying to stay in control of her emotions and think of her chances of getting out of this or of Jordan finding her, she took a seat on the dirty bed.

It didn’t take her much time to realize it would be difficult for Jordan to find her and even more for her to escape. She had no idea where she was, and what she might find around the place. Even though she was certain she would try to escape whenever she had the chance. She couldn’t accept the idea of never seeing Jordan again, of never feeling her mom's arms wrapped around her. She had to find a way out, somehow, she just had to.

She leaned against the wall and waited. She was sure Hernandez would be back. She was also sure she wouldn’t like it, but there wasn’t much she could do about it. Not yet anyway.

The sun was starting to go down in the sky when the door to the cell opened up, and Hernandez entered, holding a knife in one hand and a few ropes in the other. She couldn’t help the shudder that ran through her spine when she saw him.

He locked the door behind him and smiled at her, a smile filled with malice and cruelty.

Chapter 2

Jordan was in his office working when Maria had called him. "Señor Jordan, it's señorita Ashley." The woman stuttered, obviously shaking.

"Maria, what's the matter? What happened to Ashley?" he asked worriedly.

"She received a phone call telling her that her mother had had an accident and that she needed to get to the hospital," Maria explained. "La señorita Ashley got dressed and ran out of the house saying she would call you to explain."

"When did this happen?" Jordan asked, tense.

"About half an hour ago, señor." The woman replied. "I thought the whole thing was a bit strange, so I called Garcia and asked him to contact señorita Ashley's mother, to see if she was alright."

"And is she?" his voice was growing colder and colder with every second that went by.

"Yes… yes, she is. She didn’t have any accident. I tried to reach señorita Ashley on her cell phone, but the phone seems to be off." Maria explained.

"Who took her out of the house?"

"No one, señor. She was so desperate, she ran out the door and jumped in a taxi that was passing by. The guards didn’t have time to react."

"Very well. I'll take it from here. Thank you, Maria." He said, in a tone so cold the woman shuddered on the other side of the line.

"Do you think she is alright, señor?" she dared to ask.

"I'm sure she is." He ended the call and stormed out of his office just to find Wilson and Garcia coming in running. "Is the tracking device working, Wilson?" he asked.

"I'm checking boss. We tried to reach her on her phone, but it's like Maria says. It seems to be off." Wilson answered, grabbing a computer and starting to type furiously on it. "It's working, boss. She's on the move."

"Where to?" Jordan asked, approaching the computer's screen to see it for himself.

"She's leaving town, on the highway, but the signal is getting weaker," Wilson informed after a few moments.

"So, she's not on her way to the hospital," Jordan concluded, his face expressionless. "Wilson, go get her. Get rid of whoever is helping her and bring her back to the house."

"Yes, boss, on my way. I'll be back as soon as possible." Wilson jumped out of his chair and stormed out of the office.

Jordan went back to his office and shut the door violently, making the whole place shudder. He walked to the window and leaned his head against the cold glass, one question hammering his mind relentlessly: 'Why?' She hadn’t shown any sign that she would do a thing like that. Last night they had been so close, he couldn’t believe she was actually escaping.

His cell phone rang. It was Wilson. "Talk to me." He ordered.

"We lost the signal, boss." The other man admitted.

"What!? What do you mean you lost the signal?" Jordan ranted.

"The tracking device doesn’t need for the cell phone to be on, boss, but it does require a minimum battery charge to work, so I'm guessing she ran out of battery boss."

"Damn! He pounded the wall in front of him. "Where did you lose her signal?"

"Just leaving the highway, heading southeast, boss. She could be anywhere." Wilson informed.

"Contact everybody you're able to find in the area and see if someone saw her." He took a look at his wrist watch and cursed his luck. "I have to go visit my godmother. She's expecting me. Let me know the minute you find out anything."

"Yes, boss."

Jordan stormed out of his office, his mood darker than ever, but he knew he couldn’t cancel his lunch with his godmother. He had canceled it way too many times now.

When he arrived at the Marquez family house, he stopped outside the door for a few seconds masking his distress and putting on a mask of coolness.

He pressed the bell and his godmother in person opened the door for him. "Jordan, hijo, come on in. We were just waiting for you." She greeted him.

"Madrina, I'm sorry I'm a bit late." He apologized with a smile.

"It's alright, darling. Nicholas himself has just arrived." She dismissed his apologies with a hand gesture.

"Nicholas is here?" Jordan asked, trying to control his rage. The last thing he wanted right now was to put up with one of the Marquez boys.

"Yes, he just showed up. You know this is like his house." She was obviously pleased.

"Yes, of course, madrina."

They entered the house and met Nicholas in the living room. The other man's smile got on his nerves, but he held back his strong desire to punch him right in the face. "Hello, Nicholas, what a coincidence seeing you here."

"Jordan, how are you, man?" He greeted with his usual greasy smile. "Yes, Aunt Jenny always has food enough to feed a battalion and there's no better food in town."

"Yes, of course, I agree with you, but don’t you go telling that to my mother." Jordan agreed with a faint smile. It was going to be a very long lunch.

When Jordan returned to his house with Garcia, Wilson was already there waiting for them.

"Is there any news?" Wilson shook his head.

"I have all I could contact looking for her, but so far nothing yet. And her cell phone is still dead. I also have people on that. We'll be notified the moment she turns it on."

"That’s if she hasn’t tossed it in the garbage," Jordan replied, furious. "She can't have disappeared like that. Someone must have seen something."

"We're trying to find the taxi she left in. But so far no luck there, either." Wilson informed, starting to fear he would end up like the messenger carrying the bad news.

"I don’t care about the hour, or the size of the lead, I want to be notified of it."

"Yes, boss, at once."
