“You can’t blame yourself. You married me under odd circumstances. And you took in my child, too.”

“I’m glad I did, Ellyn. Don’t leave. I’m happy when you’re here.”

That made her smile. She finally caught her breath. “Let me see it.”

He rolled onto his back. She hadn’t seen the scar yet. It was still red and probably a little irritated from their lovemaking. She kissed it. He didn’t flinch, but she heard him hiss.

“It still hurts a little,” he said.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I wanted this,” he said. She guessed he’d wanted her, too. And he looked like he might want her again soon. Her grin grew wider.

Colton lay there with Ellyn in his arms, not wanting to move. Not wanting to break contact. He knew they’d have to eat soon. The moment was perfect.

“Ellyn?”

“Mm?”

Was she asleep? She wasn’t snoring like usual. “You asleep?”

“No, just comfy.”

“I want to talk to you about something. Well, two things.”

“Right now? While we’re naked?”

“Yes, right now. If I don’t say these things I’ll burst.”

“Okay,” she said.

“Look at me?”

She shifted her head so her chin rested on his chest. She looked at him with big eyes. “What?”

Her forehead had those worry lines. He rubbed them away. “No need to be concerned.”

“No?”

“No. I wanted to tell you that I love you.”

Her eyes widened and she lifted her head off his chest. “You love me? That isn’t the afterglow talking?”

“No. I’ve known this for some time.”

“Say it again,” she said.

“I love you, Ellyn Hamilton.”

“I love you, too, Colton Hamilton the third.” She giggled, then kissed him. That kiss spoke of the future and their life together.

“I hope you tell me that every day.”

“I plan on it.”

“I feel so giddy.”

“Didn’t you know?” he said.

“I wasn’t sure,” she said.

“I’m sorry.”

“What else did you want to talk to me about?”

“Derek.”

“What about Derek?”

“Well, two things.”

“That would now be three things, total,” she said.

“Do you want to hear this or not?”

“I do. Sorry. I’ll shut up.”

Colton couldn’t help laughing. Her face was so funny. It was a face he’d never get tired of looking at. Not in a million years. Not ever. He loved this woman so much.

“I want to adopt Derek.”

“Adopt him?”

“Yes. You know. Adoption. I become his legal father.”

“I don’t know if Chance would agree to that,” she said, frowning.

“He already has.”

“What?”

“Doug talked to him before he went back to jail. He signed over his parental rights.”

She cocked her head. “Doug never mentioned it.”

“Well, he did it for me so attorney-client privilege and all that.”

She smiled. “So he’d be Derek Hamilton.”

“If he wanted to take my name. That would be up to him. I’d be fine either way.”

“So I don’t have to take him to see Chance in jail.”

“I really wish you wouldn’t,” Colton said.

Chance was going to be in jail for a long time so he didn’t need to ever see Derek again.

“I won’t. Not now. Okay. Adoption.”

“With your permission of course.”

“Do you think I’d not allow it? You’ve been more of a father to Derek in the short time you’ve known him than Chance ever has. Of course, you can adopt him. I can’t wait to tell him.”

“Neither can I.”

“There was one more thing. What was it?”

“In the future, at a mutually agreeable time, I’d like to give Derek at least one sibling.” Ellyn’s eyes grew wide. “Really? You want to have a baby with me?”

“Yes. I’d love to have a baby with you. Think about how much easier it would be with both of us taking care of it?”

“You’d take time off?”

“Of course. You can’t do it alone.”

She blinked. “Well, we know I can.”

“But I don’t want you to. I’d have everything set up so I could not work for a few weeks, then work from home and we’d do this together.”

“You’ve thought about this.”

“I had a lot of time to think in the hospital.” He knew then that he could never let Ellyn go. She was his wife, his love and the future mother of his children. “What do you say?”

“In the future?”

“Yes. I understand you’ve just begun your career. I wouldn’t want to take that from you.”

“Okay.”

“Okay, what?” he said.

“Okay, we’ll have a kid in the future.”

Colton let out a whoop and so did Ellyn. Then they both laughed.

“So we can tell Derek together tonight?” Colton said.

“Yes. The sooner the better, but I don’t want to take him out of school.”

“Let’s pick him up and go to dinner,” Colton said.

“Okay. Nothing fancy. He is only five.”

“He can learn how to be in a restaurant. It isn’t too soon. I had to wear a tie when I was his age once in awhile. For society functions.”

“So dress-up dinner?”

“Yes. Bring some clothes for him and we can eat out. And tell him the good news.”

She smiled at him. “All this because Shalia wanted to crash a party.”

Colton laughed. “Those days are over. You’re invited to the party now.”

“Doug would invite me?”

“Of course. Even if he didn’t, you’d be there anyway.”

“Why is that?”

“Because from now on you are my plus one.”

Ellyn laughed. “Plus one, huh? I like the sound of that.”

“I do too. If I weren’t already married to you, I’d marry you again,” Colton said. Ellyn’s smile lit up the room.
