Chapter 26: Laci

Stepping out of the shower, I felt like a brand new woman. What was supposed to be a quick shower turned into a sexcapade. My hair was soaking wet and my love nest was tingling. If it was one thing Gunz knew how to do, it was bringing me to the highest of highs. I busied myself getting dressed. I put on the outfit Gunz had picked out and I must say it was a really good choice. Everything fit my body perfectly. I threw on a black pair of booties and stood in the mirror trying to figure out what to do with my hair.

It was a curly mess and I didn’t feel like trying to tame it. I combed it out, rubbed some leave in conditioner in it, then threw it into a classy bun with my baby hairs slicked down. I stood in the mirror, making sure my overall outfit was cute and I looked cute in it. Meeting Gunz’s parents was a big deal for me. He never said much about them, which was why I was surprised he wanted me to meet them. Now that I think about it, Gunz didn’t really say too much of anything about his life. The most he has told me was that he participates in illegal activity. We had only really been together for a month. Our relationship was fairly new, so I really wasn’t complaining about our lack of communication. I just didn’t want us to get caught up in all the lust and forget about the love. Speaking of love, Gunz was the first man I ever told those words to. It scared me that I had these feelings for him so quick and fast. I never talked to anyone about love, so I didn’t know if there was a time frame. I didn’t even really know what love was; what I did know was the feelings I had for Gunz ran deep and there was no way that what I was feeling was a heavy like.

“You ready to go ma?” Gunz asked, sneaking up behind me.

“As ready as I will ever be.” I smiled at our reflection in the mirror.

“Calm down, it’s not that serious.”

“If you say so. Let’s go, so we can get this over with,” I told him.

We headed out and got into his car. While Gunz drove, I started texting Nazi. Times like this is when I wished she would hurry up and move back here. I was in the middle of sending her a text when she called.

“You missed me that much you couldn’t wait for me to send the text back.” I laughed.

“Laci, this is important. My life is over and I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do. I mean, I didn’t expect them to continue paying but I mean, damn, it was only one more semester.”

“Slow down Nazi; I need you to explain everything.”

“Your parents cut off my school tuition. I mean, I didn’t really expect them to keep paying but I only had one more semester left after this one. Why couldn’t they old asses just let me be great? Do you know how embarrassing it was to walk into the financial aid office and to be told that I must leave campus immediately? Them motherfuckers took back the money they paid for the winter semester. Isn’t that some fucking bullshit? Like, come on, I can’t even finish the semester at hand. I promise you, I wish them nothing but fucking death and misery.”

“Wait, the school isn’t even letting you finish up the semester?”

“No Laci, what part of your parents took back their money didn’t you understand.”

“Nazi, I understand you’re upset but that doesn’t mean take your anger out on me because I didn’t do anything to you. Just come back to New York and we will figure something out. I guess you can live with Jinx.”

“Me and Jinx just started dating; why would I want to live with him so early in our relationship? Don’t worry about it. I have money saved up that your parents don’t know about because I keep it in a separate account. I’ll get a room until I can figure something out. Don’t worry about me, Laci.” And with that, Nazi hung up the phone.

“Is everything okay?” Gunz asked, looking at me from the corner of his eye.

“I don’t know; I’ll just call Nazi back later.” I told him.

“If you need to talk to me about it, then talk to me Laci. I’m here to help you whenever I can.”

“It’s nothing, I swear.” I smiled.

I was lying my ass off but it wasn’t my business to tell. Nazi was the independent type that didn’t like too many people in her business. If I told Gunz, he would tell Jinx, and then Nazi would be ringing my phone down going off. This was one thing I was going to keep to myself.

“Strike one,” Gunz said, pulling up to one of the most beautiful houses I have ever seen. The outside was all white with hints of gold. It was something out of a magazine or MTV Cribs when it used to come on. For his parents to live in Queens, this house definitely stuck out like a sore thumb.

“Strike one what?” I finally asked.

“You heard what I said, strike one. You get two more and you’re out. I don’t do liars or sneaky people. Now I’m not going to make you tell me what you are keeping from me but just know this is strike one. In order for this relationship to work, we both need to be honest and truthful.”

“I am truthful; I have no reason to lie to you. You’re the one that doesn’t like to talk about himself. I barely know anything about you while you know all there is to know about me. You even know things about me that I don’t know. So, if it’s strike one for me, it’s strike one for you too.”

I stepped out of the car and walked up to the door waiting for Gunz. I wasn’t going to take his shit anymore. He wanted to be hard on me, then I was going to be just as hard on him.

“Laci, you putting your foot down does nothing but my make my dick hard. So, let’s get this dinner over with, so I can get you back to the crib.”

“Just knock on the door please.”

He laughed, kissed me on the forehead, then knocked on the door. A couple of seconds later, a woman who looked like an older version of Jiselle opened the door.

“You must be Laci. I was wondering when my son was going to stop hiding you. You can call me Rose.” She smiled.

“Ma, don’t start, we just got here. Let the girl get comfortable first,” Gunz said, walking into the house and pulling me in with him.

“Bryce, I didn’t do anything but say it was nice to meet the girl. The guys are in the living room. Laci, you can come in the kitchen with me and Jiselle.”

“Nah, she coming in the living room with me.”

“We are not going to hurt the girl.” His mother snatched my hand away from him and dragged me into the kitchen. She made me take my coat off and she threw it at Gunz. I wanted to look back at Gunz with pleading eyes, telling him to save me. Instead, I sucked it up and was going to handle both of these women the best that I could.

“Look what my mother dragged in,” was the first thing Jiselle said as I walked into the kitchen.

“Laci, you can start on the sweet potatoes. You do know how to cook sweet potatoes, don’t you?” his mother asked.

“Of course I do.” I smiled politely, but on the inside, I was fuming. I had only been in this kitchen for a minute and already his mother and sister was throwing jabs at me.

“So Laci, has Bryce told you that we knew your parents?” his mother asked.

“Uh yeah, he told me; he also told me about the agreement you made with my parents.”

“It wasn’t an agreement; we just thought you and Bryce would be good together. Obviously, we were right,” Rose smirked.

“I don’t know why she acting like she has a problem with it when she agreed to an arranged marriage that my brother had to get her out of,” Jiselle sassed.

“Jiselle, don’t talk to your brother’s girlfriend like that,” Rose said, standing up for me.

“No Rose, allow Jiselle to talk. Jiselle, if you have something to say, then just say it. This attitude you have is really starting to irk me.”

“Oh, my attitude is really starting to irk you. Well, guess what? I don’t give a fuck. You are going to deal with my attitude until I feel like being nice, which is no time soon.”

“I know I may not be your favorite person for whatever reason, but I do not tolerate disrespect. I may not be a fighter but that doesn’t mean I won’t get my ass beat to show you that I’m tired of your shit. I have done nothing to you, and what me and your brother have is real. If you can’t respect that, then don’t say shit to me.” I wasn’t scared of Jiselle; I just knew that she could probably kill me in less than a second. However, I was getting real tired of the way she thought she could talk to me however she liked.

“Look at little miss perfect trying to grow a set of balls.” Jiselle laughed.

“I’m not trying to grow anything; I just want to understand why you don’t like me.”

“You want to know why I don’t like you. I don’t like you because you can’t do nothing for my brother. You are a liability.”

When she said it, I let out a small gasp. I looked towards Gunz’s mother and she just shrugged her shoulders.

“Jiselle, that is where you are wrong. I am not a liability. I may not be able to build him up in the criminal activity he is into, but I can build him up in other ways. When he comes home and needs hot food, I got him. When he just needs someone to listen to how his day went, I got him. Most importantly, when he needs someone to help him release some stress, I put this pussy on him and, wallah, all stress is gone. I treat him like the king he is and that’s all that really matters. So, if I’m a liability because I can’t shoot a gun or I’m not savvy with a knife, then I’ll take that because the things I am good at are the things that your brother love about me.”

“Jiselle, you heard what that girl said, now leave her alone,” Rose said, winking at me.

“Whatever,” Jiselle mumbled and walked out of the kitchen.

“Don’t pay my daughter any mind; she is very protective of her brothers and she’s not the friendliest out of my children.”

“I understand that but she takes it above and beyond. I know that is your daughter but she is a complete bitch.”

“Trust me, I know and it’s probably because she gets it from me.”

“I don’t think you’re a bitch, Rose.” I didn’t know Rose too well, but she didn’t seem as bad as Jiselle.

“That’s because I know your family. If you were just some random chick my son brought over, you wouldn’t be allowed in the house but because I know so much about you as a person, I let you see the nice side of me.”

“Oh okay,” was all I was able to say. I was starting to think that all the females in this family were crazy as hell.

“Don’t take what I said the wrong way because I didn’t mean any harm. My family is all about power and respect. We didn’t raise Gunz, Jinx, and Jiselle like a regular family. We didn’t shower them with love; we showered them with discipline. I know that’s not the right way to raise our kids but it worked for us. Now that Stephan and I are out of the game, we are trying to work on building our family. We may not be perfect but we are the best people we can be. Your mother and father were so different from us that it’s crazy we got along.” Rose smiled.

“You knew my parents?”

“Of course we did. Bryce didn’t tell you the story?”

“Yeah, he told me the story but it was really brief.”

Rose then went on to the tell me the full story of my parents.  I was stunned when she told me that Shirley and Dennis worked for the Ferragamo. What shocked me even more was when she told me that Shirley and Dennis were the people responsible for who killed my parents. When she explained it, everything made sense. Shirley was a plastic surgeon, which made certain drugs easy for her to get, such as a drug that could possibly cause me to lose my memory. The only thing I could honestly remember was when Shirley and Dennis came into me and Nazi’s life.

“I can’t believe it,” I whispered out loud.

“You remind me so much of your mother; it’s crazy. She was just as kindhearted as you are. If you didn’t really know her, then you would think she was just a stay at home wife, other than the head of a crime family. Your mother was sweet but once you crossed her, she became cold. Your father was a fire cracker, so the two of them together balanced each other out.

You parents loved you and your sister; they would do anything for you girls. The reason we wanted you and Bryce to be together was because the same way your mother calmed your father down would be the same way you would calm my son done. It may sound crazy that we could see it while y’all was so young but we did. Laci, you are a special girl, and my son is lucky to have someone like you in his life.

So, stop letting Jiselle take your kindness for weakness. You are a Lewis and it’s time that you start acting like one. Jiselle says you’re a liability, only because of what she knows of you, which isn’t much. You are your mother’s child and you are born for this journey that you are about to embark on. This shit is in your blood, lil mama, so I need you to boss up and handle your business. Not just because you are with my son but because you are the living legacy of one of my dearest friends.”

By the time Rose stopped talking, I was in tears. The way she spoke of my mother touched me.

“No need to cry Laci; from here on out, just be the woman you were destined to be. Now, go wipe them tears and go in the living room with your man.”

I washed my hands then went into the living room. Gunz introduced me to his father and we made idle talk. For the rest of the night, I got to know Gunz’s family a little bit better or at least as good as I was going to know them. In the kitchen, I felt as though Rose opened up to me but, when we ate dinner, she seemed a little closed off. Of course, Gunz and Jinx were the most vocal but everyone else seemed guarded. They were secretive but open at the same time; it was confusing as hell. I found it odd, but I didn’t question it. I was going to wait until we left to talk to Gunz because I had more than a few questions to him about his family.
