Chapter One

“Freeze!” Sheriff Joseph Nash shouted. He could see a man leaning over a prone body on the floor of the small country market he had been called to. He pointed the gun at the man and repeated his command. “Freeze! Sheriff! Don’t move a muscle.”

Much to his astonishment, the man continued to do something over the body beneath him. Joe couldn’t figure out what. All he knew was that he had gotten a call that there had been a holdup at Garner’s Country Market, with shots fired.

“I said freeze! Do you want to get shot?”

Joe couldn’t say who was more surprised, himself, now that he was now looking at the sexiest moss-green eyes he had ever seen in his life, or the beautiful honey-blond-haired man looking at the gun pointed in his direction.

The man blinked at the gun a couple of times before raising his striking green eyes to Joe’s. Much to Joe’s surprise, he motioned with his hand for Joe to come closer, then turned back to the bleeding man on the floor and continued working on him.

Joe took a couple more cautious steps into the room to get a better look at the man on the floor. Damn! It was Old Man Garner himself.

He was covered in blood. Hearing the sudden steps of his deputies

coming through the door, Joe put his gun back in its holster and knelt next to Garner.

“What happened? Did you see who did this?” He looked down at the injured man. “Is he going to make it?” He noticed several things at once. The man had rubber gloves covering his hands, and his clothes were splattered with blood.

The man across from him looked up from what he was doing, exasperation written all over his face as he applied pressure to the gunshot wound in Old Man Garner’s chest. As he did, the sound of the ambulance pulling up could be heard. The man looked up as the paramedics wheeled the gurney in.

He quickly scooted out of the way as the paramedics lifted Garner onto the gurney and wheeled him out of the building and into the ambulance. The man looked down at the blood on his glove-covered hands, seeming appalled by what he saw. He looked up at Joe questioningly.

“Guess you’d like to wash up a bit, huh?” When the young man nodded, Joe led the man to the back of the store and the restroom. He waited outside while the man cleaned up, wondering who in the hell he was and what he knew about the holdup and shooting.

Five minutes later the door opened, and the man, a bit cleaner, walked out. He took a deep breath when he saw Joe leaning against the wall, his arms crossed. He finally nodded his head as he came to stand in front of Joe.

“I have some questions for you.”

The beautiful man nodded, his head bent down.

“Would you like some water first? I imagine you could use it considering…” He gestured around the store with his hand. Again the man nodded.

“I think we can come up with something,” Joe replied as he waved for the man to precede him. He turned and followed the man through a doorway and back into the main room of the store. Reaching into a

small refrigerated cabinet, he pulled out bottled water and handed it to him.

Joe watched as he opened it and took a long swig, the sight of his Adam’s apple moving in his throat making him squirm a bit. Joe took in the younger man’s good looks. He had a long, sleek neck that just begged to be nibbled on. He stood several inches shorter than Joe’s six foot three, maybe five foot seven or so and one hundred and fifty pounds. But he carried it very well.

His body was compact but well defined with rippling muscles and strong, sleek bodylines. He had light honey blond hair that curled in waves down to his shoulders. But it was his beautiful moss green eyes that mesmerized Joe. He could stare into those eyes for hours.

It was hard for him to concentrate on the job he was here to do when faced with such a perfect example of masculine beauty. He knew he could spend hours just looking at the little man in front of him. Unfortunately, work took precedence.

“So, want to tell me who you are and what you’re doing here?”

Joe finally asked as the man screwed the cap back onto the bottled water. The young man just shrugged his shoulders.

“Did you see who did this?”

He shook his head no as he started for the front door, turning suddenly when Joe grabbed him by the arm. He quickly jerked his arm out of Joe’s grasp and took a hasty step back, rubbing the spot where Joe had touched him.

The man, who had before been easygoing and calm, had suddenly become jumpy and frightened. Joe knew that there was more going on here than met the eye.

“It’s okay. No one is going to hurt you. However, I can’t let you leave just yet. You need to come down to the station and give a statement. Until we’ve gone through the evidence, you are not cleared to leave.”

His eyes suddenly filled with panic. He started shaking his head, his body movements getting more frantic by the second as he backed up towards the front door of the small market.

“Look, you don’t have a choice here. You were either a witness or the perp in a crime. Until I know which, you’re not leaving.” Joe could see that he was getting ready to flee.

He went to reach for his arm again only to come up with empty air as the man bolted out the front door towards his motorbike. Joe yelled for his deputy as he took off after him. He caught up with him just as he reached his motorbike, grabbing his arm and pulling him to the ground.

He began struggling and fighting so much, Joe had to sit on his back as he handcuffed his hands behind him. He kept telling him to calm down, to not struggle, but he fought for everything he was worth to get free.

Just as Joe got him handcuffed, his weight on his back keeping him pinned to the ground, the hands of two of his deputies holding him down, one deputy on his arms, one on his legs, he suddenly stopped struggling. It was like someone had flipped a switch.

“Hey, man,” Joe asked as he slowly climbed off of him, “you okay?”

When there was no reply from him, Joe rolled him over. He swore softly when he saw that his eyes had rolled back in his head, his teeth clenched together, his body beginning to vibrate.

“Shit! He’s going into a seizure. Grab his legs, Ben,” Joe demanded of one of his deputies. Joe tried to cradle his head in his hands, keeping him from injuring himself on the hard concrete as he seized.

“Don’t hold him down. Just make sure he doesn’t hurt himself,”

Joe stated as he watched Ben hold the man’s legs down. Ben immediately loosened his grip on his legs, holding them just out of reach.

Finally, after a few moments, the blond man began to stop jerking, his body settling down. Joe quickly looked at his face. Yep, he was unconscious. Well, hell! This was going to make for a really long day.

“Ben, go open the back of my truck.” Joe carefully lifted him up in his arms, surprised at how well the little man seemed to fit there.

He couldn’t help but admire his beautiful form as he laid him down in the backseat of his vehicle. He was really something to look at. Joe knew without a doubt that he’d be fantasizing about his sexy body later tonight.

“Hey, Ben, I’m going run this guy over to the hospital real quick, have him checked over. I want you to gather up Old Man Garner’s bat and some blood samples. Make sure you use proper procedures when doing it. We don’t want the perp getting off because we screwed up.”

“Sure thing, Sheriff.” Ben gestured towards the body in Joe’s backseat. “You think he did this to Mr. Garner?”

Joe shook his head. “No, not really, but I need to be sure before I let him loose. You know that. Hopefully, Old Man Garner can tell us something soon. That reminds me, if the hospital calls, tell them I want any reports of someone coming in with a broken nose.”

“Broken nose, Sheriff?”

“Yeah, one of the possible perps may have had a broken nose, hence the DNA evidence on the bat. Old Man Garner might have taken a swing at one of them.”

Ben chortled. “I believe it. Old Man Garner can be one mean SOB

when he wants to. Hey, what do you want me to do with the kid’s bike?”

Joe looked over at the black motorcycle sitting in front of the store. “Have Charlie come by and pick it up. He can park it in the police lot for now. If he isn’t involved, I don’t want him to have to pay an impound fee.”

“Okay, Sheriff. See you at the station then.”

Joe nodded as he climbed into his big two-tone brown Dodge Ram Charger and closed the door. Making sure his backseat passenger was secured, he started the vehicle and started towards the hospital.
