BIBLIOGRAPHY

Most of the twelfth-century sources are to be found in one or several of the following collections. Each collection is identified below by an abbreviation. In order to indicate the text that has been cited, the appropriate abbreviation for the collection from which it derives is then placed after each special source in the bibliography. The abbreviations that precede items are those used in the notes to identify particular sources frequently cited. In a number of cases, recent editions of medieval works are substituted for original texts as being more accessible.

Proper names offer difficulty for the bibliography as well as for the text, since the chroniclers offer them in English or French or Latin, often with many variants, and no scheme for regularizing them seems free from serious disadvantages. Certain names, in whichever language, have come through frequent use to identify individuals or places that would seem strange under other designations. Whatever are assumed to be familiar titles are therefore retained.
