The character of Fudge first appeared in
Tales
of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Judy says: "Back then Fudge was inspired by my son, Larry. This time around my grandson was the inspiration. I promised him if I ever got another idea I'd write a new Fudge book. I feel really lucky that just when I least expected it, an idea came to me. I was eating pancakes at the time and started making notes for the book an hour later. hmmm... maybe I should eat more pancakes!"
