Chapter Fifteen
Sophia

I’m in the hospital again. It seems to be becoming a habit. I hate waking up and not knowing where I am. I remember everything, that woman and my dad, rushing out of the house, sitting at the red light and something hitting me.

I know I’m overreacting with my dad, but seeing him with that woman, it finally hit home, my mom isn’t ever coming back. The pain of realizing that, hit me full force. Katy B’s ‘Crying for No Reason’ pops into my head. I miss my mom so much.

In walks the doctor if you can call him that, this dude looks to be about twelve. He has brought a machine along with him.

“Hi Ms. Dallas, I’m Dr. Forsyth. Do you remember what happened?” I look at him. Is he for real?

“Yes I remember what happened today, I also remember what happened in the Ninety’s which I doubt you can.”

He laughs, this dude thinks I’m messing with him, I’m not.

“Yes, Ms. Dallas I can remember the Ninety’s, I was born in the Eighty’s. Now do you have any pain, light headedness, headaches or nausea?

“Yes to headache, no to everything else.” He looks thoughtful for a moment.

“Ms. Dallas, you have suffered a mild concussion, you and your baby are fine.”

I’m sorry what the fuck did he just say? I must have misheard.

“Excuse me, you want to repeat that?” he looks at me funny.

“You have a mild concussion, you and your baby are fine.”

There is something wrong with this man, did he not study at school?

“Look Doctor, you must be mistaken. There is absolutely no way I can be pregnant. Maybe you need to go back to med school?”

He laughs again, why is he laughing? It’s not funny.

“Ms. Dallas”

“Oh for fuck sake my name is Sophia.” He chuckles

“Ok Sophia, You’re 100% pregnant, your HCG levels are high, showing you’re more than a few weeks. That is why I brought the ultrasound machine with me, so we can get the exact date.”

“Whoa slow down there sparky, I’m not pregnant, I have the coil in.”

“Sophia, not all contraceptives are 100% reliable, the only method that is sure proof is abstinence. So let’s just check shall we?”

“Fine.”

After asking me when my last period was, he tells me to get undressed. I do as he says, I feel like I should be arrested, he looks so young, I feel like I could be corrupting him. I’m naked from the waist down. He has this dildo looking wand and shoves a condom on it.

Geez, you’d think with the number of billions they spend in hospitals they would come up with something a bit better. He pushes this wand into my vagina, I feel violated. He moves it around a bit, you’d think he was having fun the way he’s wiggling it around up there.

“Ah ha. Found you.” The doctor says, making me look around the room in confusion.

“I’m sorry what?” I ask and he looks at me.

“There, Sophia, there is your baby.”

He’s pointing at the screen

“Impossible, I told you Dr. Moron, I have the coil in.” He looks at the screen again

“I’m sorry Sophia the coil is no longer there.” I hop up and he quickly takes the wand out. I’m pissed. I’m being a bitch; I know I am. It’s my defence mechanism when I’m scared.

“Did you just tell me that the coil is no longer there?” He swallows and looks around the room.

“Yes Sophia, the coil is no longer inside you.”

I’m freaking out. Like how the fuck can a coil disappear.

“Um doc, how exactly does a coil disappear?” he sighs.

“Look Sophia, it could be any number of reasons, it could get dislodged during intercourse. You’re approximately 7 weeks.”

“That motherfucking wankshaft.”

Some woman comes in wearing a nurse’s uniform, she looks harassed.

“Sorry to disturb you doctor but,”

“Excuse me, Nancy, but I am currently with a patient, do you mind waiting outside?” Damn the doctor has a tone. He mustn’t like this Nancy chick if the look he just gave her is anything to go by, if looks could kill this chick would be six feet under.

“Sorry Doctor, but it’s your patient’s family that is disrupting my work.” She is the rudest person I have ever seen.

“How are they disrupting you Nancy?” She actually places her hands on her hips. What the hell is wrong with this woman?

“I was working when they came in and they were looking for an update on her and I told them that they would have to wait for the doctor and if they wouldn’t mind that I had more pressing issues to deal with. Then he proceeded in threatening my job.” She crosses her arms over her chest. This bitch is who they have working in a hospital. It’s fucking disgusting.

“Now Nancy. You are a nurse; you are meant to help people. I can’t believe you told a family that you had more pressing issues to deal with than finding out what happened to their family member who was in a car accident and they don’t know if she is still alive. Now go out and tell my patients family that I will be with them shortly and I will be speaking to Eliza about this. Now please go and speak with Ms Dallas’ family.” She looks as though she has tears in her eyes, I don’t give a fuck. Stupid bitch. She rushes out of the room.

“Now doc, what were you going to say before we were rudely interrupted?”

How the fuck am I going to tell Nathan? This is all his fault, him and his fucking dick. It needs to be locked up. Naw, fuck that, it needs to be neutered.

The doctor tells me that he will be back and re-do the ultra sound. He also tells me that I need someone to look after me tonight, I tell him I’ll be staying with Nathan. He also asks me if I’ll be telling Nathan, which I will and will it be okay to talk around him. I tell him it’ll be fine to talk around Nathan.

My family walks in, I see Nathan behind them. I do a quick sweep of everyone. Scott looks relieved; Luke looks pissed, probably because I have a bandage on my head; dad looks indecisive, and Nathan, well, Nathan he looks like he’s in shock.

I let my dad see I’m okay, I can’t handle him here

“Get Out” he looks so defeated, I want to take back my words, but I can’t, he looks around the room and nods his head and leaves.

I burst out crying, and I don’t know why, every one of the guys look shell shocked. I don’t let people see me cry, the girls have, but other than that only my team mates when Smithy died. It’s like they’re stuck, then all at once come towards me.

I halt them. “Stop, I’m fine, it’s just hormones.” Scott starts laughing.

“Oh god Soph, I don’t want to know when you’re on the rag.”

That sets Luke of laughing, but Nathan, he doesn’t laugh, he’s looking at me with eyes so big. I think he may have figured it out.

Luke and Scott don’t stay long. Nathan promises them that he will look after me. Nathan hasn’t moved from his spot at the end of the bed.

“Tell me, tell me I’m not imagining it. Please, tell me I’m right, that’s why that machine’s here? Please Soph, put me out of my misery.”

I gulp, look him in the eyes “I’m pregnant Nathan, we’re going to have a baby.”

He drops to his knees, his head bent to his chest, his body starts bucking. I go to get out of the bed, he pins me with a look, his eyes full of water.

“Don’t, stay right where you are.”

I’m worried, Nathan’s never like this.

“Nathan, what’s wrong?” He walks over to the bed and sits to my right side. His hands span my face.

“I could have lost you today Soph, the two of you, without even knowing you both. That fucking hurts Soph, I fucking love you.”

I’m crying again, “I didn’t mean to make you cry Soph.”

I give him a watery laugh. “These are happy tears; I love you too Nathan.” He laughs.

“Thank Fuck!”

The doctor walks in on us hugging. “Sorry to interrupt, but I thought you may want to see something.” He’s not very subtle, the fucker.

“Yeah doc that’s fine, show us.” I say and he smiles at me.

“Ok Sophia, you know what to do, I need you to get undressed.”

“WHAT THE FUCK! NO! Why does my girlfriend need to get undressed? Huh?” I burst out laughing.

“Umm Nathan, the baby is too small to see at the moment.”

“Yes, we need to go transvaginal. To get an accurate picture.” Nathan looks like he’s about to explode.

“What the fuck does that mean?” Ugh I’ve had enough.

“Listen, I’ve had a shit day, now shut the fuck up, sit back and let the doctor do what he needs to, so I can get home and sleep.” Well that shut him up.

“Okay, I’m sorry.”

Dr. Forsyth puts that wand back into me, yet again I feel violated. I can see the tick in Nathan’s jaw, he does not like this one bit.

“That there is your baby.” I swing my head around and look at the screen; I swear to god; I’m having a Rachael from Friends moment. I don’t see anything. I look at Nathan; he’s looking transfixed at the screen. I want to see my baby. I can’t help it, I burst into tears, and Nathan reaches for me.

“What’s wrong baby?” he says. I hide my face, I feel awful. Who can’t see their baby?

“I can’t see it.” Dr Dick face starts laughing, I swing my head around and shoot daggers with my eyes, the jerk holds his hands up in surrender.

“Sophia, you’re not the only one, don’t be so hard on yourself, now see this black dot here?”

I nod “See the white inside”

I nod again. “That is your baby.” I feel foolish.

“Oh I saw that.” Nathan hugs me to him.

“That’s our baby. Thank you Sophia.” I smile at him.

We go back to Nathan’s and he puts me straight to bed.

“Are you hungry?” I nod, because yes I’m starving, the last time I ate was this morning, it’s now 10pm.

“Ok rest here and I’ll bring you something.” He walks off.

I rest my hand on my stomach, it’s finally hitting home, I’m going to be a mom. What if I turn out like my Mama?

I’m scared, I want to be a good mom, I don’t want to be like Sarah. But what if it’s ingrained in me, or hereditary. I think back to the worst abuse I suffered at the hands of the woman who birthed me.

I’ve been locked in this room for 2 days, I have water, but that is about it. I have no food and I don’t know when the next time I’ll get some will be. Mama gets mad when I wet myself but I couldn’t help it I had too, there’s no bathroom here.

I hear laughter downstairs, it’s that man, I don’t like him, he stares at me funny. He makes Mama do things to him when I’m around. I try to hide when he comes. Sometimes he bends Mama over the couch and hurts her. He sticks this stick thing in her that’s’ stuck to him, I don’t know what it is but Mama doesn’t like it. Mama cries, it hurts her. I got slapped when I told him to stop hurting Mama.

I hear footsteps leading down to my room. I hear the door unlock and I brace myself for what’s about to happen. Mama bursts in the door, I can’t help it I wet myself. She goes mad. She picks me up and throws me. I land on the edge of the bed, I hit my head on the corner. I start to cry; Mama starts kicking me.

I try to move my hand but I’m not fast enough. I feel this heaviness on my wrist. I feel so much pain I cry out. Mama keeps kicking me. I’m hurt in so many places. I try to move, when I look up I realize it was that man, that man stood on my wrist, he and Mama won’t let me go. They both take turns hitting me, I don’t know what happens but I close my eyes and sleep.

I wake up in pain, but for the first time in a long time I’m clean, my hair is washed and my clothes are clean. Mama comes into the room; she too looks clean. She gives me a piece of dry toast. I eat it slowly, I need to, I don’t know when the next time I’ll eat again. Mama rolls her eyes.

“Come on you, we need to hurry. Now, you better listen, you do and say exactly what I tell you, do you understand?”

I nod my head “Yes Mama.”

She brings me to the hospital and tells them that I was beaten up by some kids while I was playing outside. I don’t tell the nice doctor that Mama was telling lies. She believes what Mama tells her. I have a pink cast on my arm, I broke it, they put stitches in my head. The doctor taught me how to say it. I like the doctor she has kind eyes; she smiles a lot.

We go home and Mama goes to the kitchen. I sit in the living room and wait for Mama to come back out but she doesn’t. I go to kitchen to find her, she’s gone. She left through the back door.

I’m pulled out of my memories by Nathan’s voice, “Do you want tea?” Tea? What the hell would I want tea for?

“No I don’t want tea.” He comes running into the bedroom.

“Why are you crying?” Huh? I wipe my face I didn’t even notice.

“Sorry, I’m fine.” He doesn’t look convinced; he sits down on the bed beside me.

“Why were you crying Soph?” I smile.

“That’s the first time you’ve called me Soph.” He smiles back.

“Yeah I know, now tell me.” I sigh.

“I was thinking about my biological mother.” He looks confused.
