Three Months Later

Three months
had passed since Chase came to my apartment, making things right, bringing us together in the best way possible. Looking back, I couldn’t believe all we had gone through. We’d only been dating for three months now, but it felt like
so
much longer than that. We saw one another a few times a week, having a one-on-one date night at his place, with no distractions, even with cell phones off, which was a big thing for him considering his line of work.

I couldn’t believe I almost missed out on all of this. I came so close to throwing it all away, never looking back and doing who knew what with my love life. I could be with just another guy, maybe even still using that app to try to meet someone, when that perfect person was right there all along, even if I didn’t want to believe it for a little while. My life could be wildly different if he hadn’t come to my apartment door that one night. I tried not to think of it too much, but at other times, I liked to think about it a lot. It reminded me how truly lucky I was, and that anything can happen, no matter what you have in your head.

Chase had been there every step of the way with me, never disappearing, never ignoring me, and definitely never being the man he used to be when I first met him. He was still a little kinky in the bedroom, those activities taking place a few weeks after we had made things official, and I guessed that was my constant little taste of how we came to meet. It wasn’t the story I wanted to tell my parents or friends, but deep down I knew that even though this journey didn’t start with the purest of intentions, it ended up being the most pure thing in my life.

Things were going so great that I was almost scared of the next step. We had been dating for a little over three months, after all, and the next thing to do would be to say “I love you” to one another. I knew I was falling for him, who wouldn’t, but I think every girl gets a little nervous of saying it to someone new, especially if they end up saying it first. Rejection is hard, and after all of the rejection I’d faced in my life, it didn’t make things any easier, no matter how hard I wished it had.

Even with that, though, even with my nervousness, I knew it would be okay in the end. It was one of those things where you know you’ll get a good answer or result, but you’re still nervous to get it over with. Your nerves won’t melt away and release until you actually get it out there, in the open, those three words being reciprocated. Loving him was the best decision I could make, and at the end of the day, I’d rather say it and be nervous than never say it at all. I also knew deep down he’d say it back. He did fight so hard for me.

I picked up my backpack, ending my new favorite class, World Religions, and rushed out of the room, down the hall, and out of the double doors with the other students, dozens of them, trying to get to the next class. I ran up to a red car, an Italian beast that sat on the side of the parking lot, as I caught a glimpse of students stopping, gazing at its beauty, some of them even taking pictures.

“Hello, beautiful,” Chase said as I closed the door.

“Hello, handsome,” I replied, smiling, as I buckled myself in.

He leaned in, gave me a sweet little kiss, his left hand on the steering wheel, before he leaned back, beginning to drive away as I licked my lips and bit my lower lip.

I looked at him, him not catching my glances, and realized one thing as I stared at him.

I was in love.
