He lay back against the pillows. “No. I wouldn’t.”

“Exactly.” She stared at him. “You would tell me I needed to rest. You did it when I had strep and you’d do it if I were in your shoes.”

“You’re right. I didn’t leave you, though. And I wouldn’t leave you.”

“I’ve got to work. It’s not like it’s a choice.”

“I know that. But when you’re home, you’re distant. You act like you don’t want me around.”

She grabbed her scrub top. “I don’t know how to take care of you. You do whatever the hell you want. You don’t listen to me. How can we even have a conversation?”

“Okay. Fine. Tonight, me and you have a date in bed. I’ll rest and you can entertain me with stories of your day.”

She pulled her pants on. “You’re actually going to stay in bed all day? I don’t believe that. The moment I leave, you’ll be up, doing whatever you want.”

“I’ll do it if you promise to get rid of the hostility and agitation.”

She blew out a breath. “Okay. I promise.”

He smiled. “You’re gorgeous, even without sleep.”

“There’s your infamous charm.” She finger combed her hair. “I was wondering when it would show itself again.”

“I can give it to you anytime you want it, baby.”

She shook her head. There was something about him that she couldn’t quite let go. It was both refreshing and frustrating at the same time. He was far from perfect, but she enjoyed being with him. Knowing he would be there when she got home gave her comfort unlike anything else. Maybe she didn’t like certain aspects of his life, but she’d come to need him just as much as he needed her.

That was the part she didn’t adapt to well.

“Razor is hiding out in the New Orleans chapter.” Superman plopped down on the sofa. “I called one of my buddies and he said that Razor gave them some big story about how the entire charter turned against him and they’re plotting some kind of war against us. He said he looked pathetic admitting that he couldn’t control his own charter, but he’s really making you out to be the bad guy. He thinks you’re dead.”

Ryker snorted, propping his hands up behind his head. He lay on the bed, keeping his word to Ella, but was damn near going out of his mind. His fucking father thought he was dead. That was actually good news for him.

“Keep the rumor floating that I’m dead. He doesn’t need to know any different. As for what we’re going to do with him, we need to get him back to town. He’s no good to me in New Orleans, and Ella will bitch something awful if I go after him.”

“Ella’s wearing the pants in your relationship now?” Vampire asked.

Ryker grinned. “She is while I’ve got a hole in my side. I should have known better than to fall in love with a doctor.”

“Are you really in love?” Superman asked. “I mean, nobody ever thought you, of all people, would be the first pussy-whipped member of the charter.”

He rubbed his eyes. “It’s not that. I mean, the sex is great, but with Ella it’s so much more. I’ve never felt that way before her and I haven’t felt it with any other chick I’ve banged.” He shrugged. “She’s my dream girl. My kryptonite. I’d kill anyone that hurt her and I’d die so she didn’t have to.”

“Yeah, we fucking know that one.” Vampire leaned his head back against the sofa. “We’ve got a shipment of coke coming in from our supplier. Do you want us to deliver it to Torch?”

“Yeah. Keep things exactly the way they are. Razor will eventually come back. Right now, he’s scared and hiding.”

“He’s afraid his head on a silver platter is next.”

“That too. He’s probably got eyes in the city. Keep things low-key. Don’t cause any unwanted attention. I’ve got to play nice with Ella’s dad so they won’t suspect that I’m alive if he’s coming over here to visit. I was supposed to have a little conversation with the police about the incident that happened.”

Superman laughed. “Hell, I bet that’s shitloads of fun.”

“The knife wound was more fun.” Ryker groaned. “You fuckers need to get out of here. Ella will be home in a little while.”

He’d been a good little boy while she was working. He’d stayed in bed, resting just like she wanted him to. He had a feeling that Razor would need to be dealt with outside the charter and its limits, so he was probably going to piss her off in the next few days. He needed to earn all the brownie points he could while he could.

“We’ll keep you updated.” Vampire stood along with Superman. “I don’t think Razor is coming out of hiding. He was grooming you to be the next leader and with the way shit went down and Ella’s connections to the police, he’s too worried about his ass.”

“He will,” Ryker commented. “Until then, do business as usual.”

After they left, Ryker decided to take a shower. He didn’t bother covering his stomach, though he did keep it away from the water spray. Some of what Ella had said was sinking into his thick skull. He got out and wrapped a towel around his hips. He needed a haircut. Staring at himself in the mirror, he took in the shaggy look he’d adopted. The longer hair didn’t suit him. Maybe he’d shave his head. That’d definitely be a change.

He heard the apartment door open while he brushed his teeth and glanced out to see Ella putting her stuff down. She looked tired and he could only imagine what kind of day she’d had at the hospital. He spit his toothpaste out and rinsed his mouth before going out to greet her.

“Hey,” he commented. “How was your day?”

She threw her arms around him and sobbed. Ryker stroked her hair as he enveloped her with his arms, holding her close while she cried against him. He didn’t ask questions and kept her close until she pulled away.

“I’m sorry.” She swiped at her cheeks. “It’s been a really long day.”

“Why are you apologizing?” He kissed her. “What happened?”

“I had to deal with knife wounds and bleeding arteries all day.” She sucked in a shaky breath. “You do it one time and they dub you as the fucking expert. I don’t want to be a doctor anymore.”

“Yes, you do.” He pulled her closer. He couldn’t feel any worse about what had happened if he tried. “You are an amazing doctor.”

She looped her arms around him. “It won’t go away.”

“I know.” He kissed her temple. “But look at me. I’m alive because of you. That’s something to be proud of.”

He took her hand and placed it on his chest. She blinked a few times. “I’m so tired.”

“We had a date in bed, remember?” He brushed her hair from her face. “You get changed and I’ll order some food. We’ll meet up between the sheets.”

She pressed her cheek against his chest. “Just hold me.”

Ryker held on to her, kissing the top of her head. “I will. Go lie down.”

When she finally moved away from him, Ryker pulled on a pair of shorts and ordered some food for them. Ella changed into her pajamas and crawled into bed, waiting for him to join her. It didn’t matter what the fuck was going on in his life—he’d stop everything for her. After the pizza arrived, he carried it to the bed and grabbed them both something to drink before sliding between the sheets.

“Eat and then get some rest, babe.” He pulled her against him and kissed her cheeks, her nose, and her eyes. “I’ve got you.”

“I deal with trauma every day.” She shook her head. “It shouldn’t affect me this bad.”

He grabbed a slice of pizza and handed it to her. “You’re overworked, fatigued, and taking care of a man-child.” She arched an eyebrow at him and he shrugged, grabbing his own slice of pizza. “You need to take care of yourself. You don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, Ella. Lay back and relax.”

They ate their pizza in silence before Ella moved closer to him.

She laid her head on his chest and circled his flat nipple with her finger. “It’s scary to think about how close we’ve gotten over a short period of time. All I could think about was losing you while I stared down at your body. I don’t ever want to feel that again, but I’m starting to think that this is just the beginning of it.”

She slid her hand down his stomach, avoiding his wound. “I really thought you were dead. I screamed at Vampire to call an ambulance. I rode all the way to the hospital on top of you with my finger plugging the hole in your artery. If I’d moved my hand at all you would have died. I knew it and they had to physically pull my hand from your body when we made it to the OR.”

Her finger circled the spot closed together with staples. “I don’t ever want to do that again.”

Ryker cupped her cheek and leaned down to kiss her. “I love you, Ella.”

She pressed her face against his chest. “Did you really stay in bed all day?”

He tried not to feel hurt that she didn’t say it back. “Yeah. I took selfies and text them to you.”

“The one of your erection hardly defines your location.”

He laughed. “I can’t help it. I missed you.”

And he did. After ten minutes of doing nothing, all he could think about was Ella naked and sucking his cock. He grew hard instantly.

“Are you sure you’re okay enough to have sex?” She pushed up from him. “You’re not just saying it?”

“I’d never joke about that.”

Ella moved to straddle him. She crossed her arms over her chest and pulled her shirt off. Ryker couldn’t stop the stupid grin from crossing his face as he reached out and squeezed her breasts. She was perfect, he determined. Everything about her.

“I don’t know what I’m doing, so you’re going to have to walk me through it.”

He sat up so that they were face-to-face. “You know exactly what you’re doing, babe.”

Her tongue tasted hot and sweet, her teeth nibbling lightly to coax his response. Ryker slipped his finger inside the leg of her shorts, touching the wetness that greeted him. She trailed a hand down his chest, caressing the hard muscle before she lightly brushed the soft ripples of his abs, heading lower until she came to the waistband of his shorts. Fire burned inside him the longer he anticipated her touch. She pulled the waistband out with one hand and dipped her other hand inside.

Her fingers wrapped around his thick shaft while her mouth stole his gasp. He brushed her clit with his thumb, drawing soft whimpers from her lips as he heightened her pleasure. It had been too damn long since he’d been inside her. His frenzied brain could barely think when her soft hand stroked the length of his shaft. It was all he could do not to push her down to the mattress and bury himself deep inside her.

She dragged her mouth from his and pushed gently at his chest. “Lie back.”

Ryker lay back against the pillows, propping himself up as she tugged his shorts off his hips and down his legs. He stroked himself, watching as her shorts came off, revealing her bare pussy to him. She left him a moment, turning so that he had a great view of her perfect ass as she walked toward the bag she kept by the door. When she returned, she handed him a condom.

“Stealing more condoms from the hospital?”

A slight smile tilted her lips. “I didn’t have time to go to the store.”

She straddled him. Her wetness brushed against his cock as he reached for her, crashing his lips against hers. Somewhere deep in his mind, he remembered he was supposed to lie back and let her take the lead, but dammit he couldn’t. Her body was made for loving and he wasn’t going to deny himself any longer.

“What do you want me to do?” she asked him.

Nothing but pure innocence shined in her eyes and he had to remind himself to breathe. His Ella. She was so damn beautiful that it hit him right in the chest. How the fuck could she be so damn different? As much as he wanted to do all kinds of sexual things with her, he couldn’t simply let her focus on his pleasure. Not after what he’d put her through and the crappy day she’d had.

He shifted slightly in the bed, scooting the pizza box over as he moved them sideways.

“I want to taste you.” He gripped her hips and lifted. “Straddle my face.”

She fell forward over him, with her breasts dangling just above his lips. He couldn’t resist the temptation and pulled her stiff nipple into his warm mouth. This was the part about his injury that fucking sucked, he realized. He couldn’t move like he should, though he was willing to risk injury to get what he wanted. Clutching her ass, he pushed her up his body, kissing and licking along her stomach as she moved to straddle his head. Her musky aroma filled his nostrils and he couldn’t wait to taste her. She leaned back slightly, resting her hands on his chest as she offered her bare pussy lips to his mouth. One long lick of her slit and he was in heaven. Sweet, pure, blissful heaven. He knew she liked his mouth on her. Ryker circled her clit with his tongue before moving down to her opening to lap up her juices. Her hips rocked against him, urging him on. Ella’s fingers drifted to her clit, stroking while he pushed his tongue inside her. She needed to get off just as much as he wanted to give her the pleasure.

“Ohh…” She dropped her head back as her hips lifted, pressing harder against his mouth. Her pussy contracted against him while her nails dug into his chest. When she was through she collapsed to the side, smiling.

“Just because you came doesn’t mean I’m done with you.” Ryker pulled her leg over him, kissing her inner thigh.

“Oh yeah?” She stared at him. “You can’t move. I could leave you high and dry.”
