“Tell us what happened out there, start to finish.”

It took a good twenty minutes to fill them.

“Shot, poisoned, mated and almost killed. Well, almost mated. Your weekend was quite eventful.” Lorne clapped him on the back once before his face turned somber. “I had a feeling something was up with Brax. Who the hell is this guy Reaper? Have any of you heard of him?”

“No idea. And Father is going to lose it when we tell him everything.”

“Wait until he finds out that the boy he took in is the one that killed Spencer. His heart will tear to shreds.”

“We’re not telling him.” Everett looked in the eyes of each brother and Kohl, who was now family, and swore them to silence. “We’re all looking for peace. We tell him and the amount of bloodshed it would cause would be on our hands. And Momma can never know either.”

“Agreed.”

“Agreed,” they all chimed in one after the other.

“Then it’s done. We’ll deal with Reaper and his offer when the time comes,” he added. He trusted his brothers and his family with his life and the life of his mate, whether she wanted to accept that yet or not.

“Thank you all for being there today.”

“We heard the gunshots, and from the echo that bounced around the valley, we knew no hunter would use such a small caliber.” Lorne leaned back against the counter and crossed his legs at the ankles. “Next best answer was you and Pepper in trouble.”

Cherry walked in and wrapped an arm around Lorne and Kohl. “Boys, I think I need a few things from town. What do you say we go pick up a roast for Sunday dinner? Rone, you drive?”

He smiled at Cherry. Bless her. “Right. A roast. Maybe some of those double-dipped chocolate fudge brownies from Mrs. Marty’s too,” Lorne teased with an eyebrow waggle.

“As if you’ve earned it.”

“But what about last night?”

God, he didn’t want to hear the rest of that argument anytime soon. “Say hi to Carebear and Adam for me. Oh and if you could not tell him about the plane just yet, that would be great.”

Rone reached out between them and Everett took his brother’s outstretched hand. “Don’t let her slip away, man.” And that’s all he said before heading out the door with the whole family in tow.

“Where did everybody go?” Pepper stepped into the kitchen and looked around. “If Aurora heard you call her Carebear, she might thump your head before Adam can.”

“Pepper. I have something to tell you.”

“I overheard most of it.”

His hands went to hers and he pulled her close. She pressed her palms over his chest, and it was like a jolt of a hundred lightning bolts to his heart. “What you probably didn’t hear was me telling my brothers I can’t live without you. And now I’m saying it to you.”

“Two days ago you were all about the fling. All heat in the bed and all ‘Doc this’ and ‘Doc that’ any other time.”

“I’m an ass.”

Their gazes locked. Held.

“Agreed.”

“Glad everyone is on the same page,” he whispered, kicking himself in the ass for all the time he let slip by because he couldn’t get his head together.

She knew what he wanted, but she wasn’t done torturing him.

“So is that it then? Because I have my flight out tomorrow evening and I should get back to town.” She pulled back from him. He advanced. “I promised the park rangers I would deliver my water samples...”

He didn’t let her finish. His hands shot out, wrapped around her waist and pulled her to him before she could utter another word. “Not without knowing how much I love you.” He hunched forward and placed his shoulder at the crook of her waist. “And the only way I can do that is it seems is by showing you.” He loved the little squeak of surprise as he lifted.

“Everett Wylde, you put me down right now.”

“Hold on, honey.”

“He took two steps at a time and wound back through the wide hallway to where several bedrooms were situated facing the sunset. He shoved open the door and tossed her onto the bed among massive amounts of mismatched throw pillows. And the perfect headboard. He smiled.

From the looks of it, Cherry had already spread her womanly touch on the spare bedroom. Thank God. Bunk beds from their childhood would have been awkward for what he had in mind. With no small kids to raise, when their parents moved closer to town, Lorne took the house while everyone else received large parcels of land to build what they wanted.

Rose-tinted drapes with tiny white flowers adorned either side of the large window that allowed sunlight to drench the room, especially the bed. He was tempted to close them but he loved the way the sunlight kissed his mate’s beautiful skin.

He shucked off his pants and shirt while earning him a narrow-eyed glare.

“What do you think you’re doing?” She swung her feet over the side, but he pegged her with a daring look and she froze.

His cock twitched eagerly. “Convincing you.”

“Of what, how well we play together? I already know that. That’s never the issue.”

“No. That you can trust me.”

She didn’t say a word after that. He inched closer to the bed until his thighs brushed the comforter. He reached forward and caught her foot when she moved to draw it back.

“Tell me to stop, sweetheart. Tell me you don’t love this and I’ll let you leave.”

He couldn’t touch her gently. He wanted her too much.

“I have a flight to catch tomorrow.” She scooted farther away, taking the thick comforter with her.

Running was never the answer. He would have to teach her. “Ah, that’s not an answer.” He yanked the bunched material around her ass down and out of his way.

“I can’t miss it,” she continued, but it wasn’t fear that he saw in her soulful eyes. Lust brimmed the confines of her irises and coaxed him deeper. Closer.

“Don’t you think it’s time to take these ugly things off?” He pulled on the heel of one wader followed by the second and tossed them both into the corner. His gaze traveled up the length of her bare legs until they fell on the cut-off shorts. She pushed back to the headboard, fluffy pillows falling every which way as she tried to make her escape.

“Everett Wylde, why are you looking at me like that?”

“Like I want to erase every memory of any other man from your memory? Because that’s exactly what I intend to do.”

She swallowed.

He crawled onto the bed and palmed her right leg, working kisses and nips in intervals up the long supple length until he reached the fringed edges of her shorts.

“How?” Oh his little minx wanted to push him. He could play.

He nibbled his way up her other leg, caressing the rough pads of his fingers over the tender flesh of her inner thigh. He dipped beneath the material of her shorts until he found the soft folds of her pussy.

She trembled.

He could have lost her today. He wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

“I love you.” He didn’t expect her to answer and he didn’t give her time to either.

Parting her, he slipped a finger along her wet slit and growled long and deep as she moaned. He reached up and flicked the button of her shorts open. The hiss of the zipper loud to his ears.

“What if someone hears?”

“There’s no one here, sweetheart.” He slipped his hands under her buttocks and pulled. Her shorts and panties joined the growing pile of clothes.

“Now for the good part.”

Her lips parted. “Really? What’s that?”

Slowly, he eased up her shirt, taking an extended nipple in his mouth the second he freed it from the confinement of her bra. A growl escaped. “Everett, take it off. All of it.”

His balls tightened in response to her demand.

He unwound his favorite scarf from her neck, the tassels coaxing her peaks into hardened pebbles.

“Yes.”

Her beautiful peach-sized breasts bounced and teased his senses. God, he loved peaches. He dived in for another taste. Her moans fed into him, a pure white heat that his soul craved, had hungered for far too long.

He moved to her other nipple, the dusky tip begging for equal attention. She arched beneath his touch and anchored her hands around the wooden slats that made up the headboard.

Perfect.

Cool air brushed the length of his back but did nothing to calm the heat boiling inside his veins.

He trailed a single finger over the blackened swirls of vines and flower tattoo, but instead of pulling away, he lingered his touch longer, craving the flash of images crossing his mind. Blindly, he stepped off the ledge and trusted what was to come.

Her supple curves lured his bear to the surface.

The mark on his right shoulder tingled, sparked to life with the magick of his people.

He reached over her head and wound the scarf around her hands and this time to the headboard.

“Everett...”

With a delicious pop he released her nipple to look her in the eyes. Thick emotions swirled in the sapphire depths, and he could tell she was at a loss for what she needed.

He had to show her.

“Remember what I promised? That I would tie you up until I had my fill?”

She didn’t answer.

“Do you trust me?”

“Do I have a choice?”

That stung. “Always.” He moved to sit up.

“Then yes.”

He paused. “Then lay back and feel. Feel the love of our bond and the magick that’s already in your veins.

“I do.”

He smiled. “Do you feel my thoughts?”

She let her eyelids slip to half-mast and gasped at the images he pushed her way of them and their first night together. The roaring fire and the cold of winter blasting the windows beyond his bedroom. The safety he provided. “I...I do.”

Using his right hand, he stroked the length of his cock. “Do you feel how much I want you?”

She moaned and clasped her legs closed as she tried to pull on her restraints. Wood creaked but held.

He leaned over her, his body pressed along her side. His shaft wedged between them and pulsing against her thigh. The woman only had to look at him and he wanted to bury himself so deep inside her neither of them could untwine themselves.

With his lips against her ear, he whispered. “Trust me, baby. Tell me what you need and I’ll see to it you’re never left wanting.”

She nodded and licked her lips. “Tell me.”

“I want to touch you.”

“That’s cheating.”

A pretty pink crept up her cheeks and she smiled for him. Damn if his world didn’t feel complete. Almost. As soon as she was his heart and soul, he would be happy until the end of days. And he meant every word of his promise. He’d make sure she knew it until his last breath.

“I want you to touch me then.”

Everett lifted his head and moved his lips close to her nipple. “Where?” He crooned, blowing.

“Yes.” She sounded desperate. “My breasts. I liked it when you sucked them. Hard and deep.”

He moved until he hovered over her, teasing her shoulder with light kisses and nibbles, tasting every inch of her sweet skin until he had her nipple between his lips.

He suckled. Gentle at first then deeper until he applied enough suction to make her arch for him.

“Oh yes. Yes, just like that.” He gathered the tender weight of the other in his hand and massaged the underside in a way he knew drove her crazy.

With a harder jerk than he anticipated, she yanked on the scarf. “My clit. I’m aching. Please touch me there and don’t stop sucking my nipple.”

He followed her orders, reveling in how he made her body tremble in need. Need for him. He moved to the other peak and repeated.

Pepper strained beneath him. The pad of his index finger slipped between her slick folds and sought out the tiny bundle of nerves hidden there. He pressed. She moaned and he damn near came.

“You’re killing me, sweetheart.”

On his knees, he gathered the heavy weight of his shaft and stroked the length as she watched. Hunger shined back at him and he couldn’t wait.

In a split second he had her legs wrapped around him and his shaft buried inside her. The need to claim her, heart and soul, driving him.

Currents of magick seeped into the room and swirled to flow in a lazy slither. “Everett, look.” She gasped.

“I see it, sweetheart.” Every color imaginable mingled and twined an intricate web of magick until a netted blanket draped over them.

“Is this what you see every time we make love?”

He nodded, pulling out and driving back in.

He fell forward, bracing himself on an elbow by her head as his other hand held her thigh. “In a way. It’s more intense now that I’ve accepted our fate.”

“Have you?” she asked. He thrust home in reply and watched as her head fell back and her lips open with a sigh.

Her channel tightened around his cock.

He pulled out enough her flared flesh wrapped around the tip. With her eyes wide open and her gaze locked on his, she dug her heels into his buttocks as she rose, impaling herself on his shaft. He threw back his head and roared until his soul felt cleansed. Breathing heavy, he gathered her waist in his hands and pulled out, only to drive home. Once. Twice.
