chances of getting out of her job at the Quik Pak. But her activities during their separation came back to haunt her. She had dated a very unpleasant ex-con who did not want her to reconcile with Aaron. Melissa and that boyfriend, at least initially, had had a good relationship; Brenda and Richard Solomon thought he seemed to be a nice guy. They had even invited him to spend Thanksgiving with their family. But according to sworn testimony, the boyfriend became abusive, and his harassment of Melissa included physical assaults. He harassed Aaron as well. On one occasion he jumped onto Quik Pak's counter as if to assault Melissa. After Aaron moved towards him he chased Aaron around the store. Melissa and Aaron filed charges against the young man and had him arrested, but according to Melissa, the stalking continued.

During the graveyard shift of February 29/March 1, Melissa had been visited by two McLennan County Sheriff's Deputies named Bobby Hunt and Dean Priddy. The men remembered that her car was parked in the usual place, on the north side of the store pointing south. They stayed for nearly a half-hour and reported that nothing seemed to be out of order. During her conversation with the officers, however, Melissa stated that her ex-boyfriend continued to harass her. She told the officers that he frequently drove off without paying for his gas, or would walk into the store, take beer, and leave without paying.

Only a few hours after the deputies visited Melissa, Kenneth's car trouble started on New Road, just south of Waco and due west of the Quik Pak. Exactly what happened during those early morning hours of March 1, 1992, may never be known. What is certain is that at one point, Kenneth Allen McDuff looked east towards the corner of New Road and Interstate 35and saw the Quik Pak #8. It was still the graveyard shift.
