GB Rapp returning to Napoleon with news of the successful attack by the French Imperial Guard cavalry against the Russian Imperial Guard. Amongst the trophies and prisoners is Prince Repnin-Volkonsky, a squadron commander in the Russian Chevalier Garde.

Napoleon diligently toured the battlefield once the fighting drew to a close. He organised what help he could for the wounded and here is seen receiving captured Allied officers against a backdrop of Allied standards.
(Sammlung Alfred und Roland Umhey)

In the early afternoon of 4 December Napoleon met Kaiser Francis at Spáleny mill, about 11 miles south of Austerlitz, with FML Johann Liechtenstein in attendance. The meeting resulted in an armistice between France and Austria.

A French satirical cartoon, ‘The Death of William Pitt’. The devil is shown carrying the British Prime Minister down to hell, while the reins supporting George III snap, sending the king towards a dark chasm over a sack bearing the words, ‘Depot of crimes of the English government.’

Appendix I: Place Names

I have retained the original spelling of town/village names as they were known in 1805 and are familiar from the literature of the campaign. However, to allow readers to follow the campaign on modern maps I have provided a comparative list giving the current versions which replaced these mainly German names.
