The local leader of the wolf pack is known as the
Alpha
,

Tristan explained.

When really powerful shifters

animals re
cognize each other

s power
,
their magic
also identifies
the need for an alliance to survive.
The master vampire will start to smell of pack and Alpha to keep the wolves in line and the Alpha will start to smell like vampire so he is accepted as well.
That

s what you both felt at the door earlier
, but more like when a vampire sovereigns another
.
Though I

ve never seen it sexual before.

He took a long drink from his beer.

So that

s why I want to touch her and put my scent on her,

Riley said
quietly, almost
as if
he was speaking
to himself.

I

ve never seen this happen before
with shifters
.
I thought it was only with vampires.

It is,

Tristan
replied.

W
hen you kissed, your power combined, building off each other.

He glanced at me with sad eyes.

Like when you sovereigned me.

That

s why I felt
power rushing all over my skin.

I
shook my head, still not sure if I had liked that feeling of the power or the kiss. I think enjoying a simple kiss made
me
more human. I

d go with that.

Did I just tie Riley to me like I did you, Tristan?

No,
not yet
,

he answered
,
shaking his head.

It

s
starting to build
,
which I don

t understand. It should either be
you minionized him
or not
,
like when a vampire makes another one.

I groaned and let my forehead thump on the table. Not that the move helped my forming headache
.

No more minions
.

I

d prefer that
,
too
.

Tristan smil
ed
weakly.

It

s more about power
.
Y
our power
is drawing it in. Don

t you want to touch him?

I guess, but I

m sitting here with my team and the man I

m sleeping with,

I answered blushing.

It doesn

t seem like the best time.

I
don’t think he’s
think suggesting we do, Seraphine,

Riley answered.

It

s more about how our power is drawn to each other.

Well this is just fucking great,

I growled
,
completely pissed to be in deep shit again.

I need some air. Guys get the information we need from Riley.

You got it
,
C
hief
.

Davis pull
ed
open her notebook and giving me sad eyes.

We

ve got this covered.

Thank, Davis
.

I st
oo
d and grabb
ed
my cup before heading into the kitchen.
I didn

t realize Tristan had followed me until I went to find the rum and he was standing there holding it out to me. I

m sure I surprised him when I didn

t even bother pouring some in my glass, instead taking a long swig straight from the bottle.

Will getting drunk help right now, Sera?

h
e asked softly.

No, but considering how I rarely drink
, it can

t hurt
,

I chuckled as a thought came to me.

Well at least until I became a shifter and everything weird that could happen to me did.
I have a vampire
minion
and now I

m
doing the same with shifters, which isn

t possible
. I mean
,
come on
.
T
his has to be a joke.

You don

t have to accept him, Sera
.

Tristan

s
eyes fill
ed
with lust.

I promise I can be more than enough to satisfy you.

Don

t, don

t you dare do that,

I sn
arled
at him, holding my hand out to stop his approach.

This isn

t about sex or us, Tristan. It

s completely about what the fuck just happened out there! What else am I capable of? And why didn

t this happen earlier when I met Riley with the other wolves?

And who could I trust with this knowledge of having an inner evil bitch?

I think I can answer that,

Davis said quietly as she walked into the kitchen.

Riley asked the same thing out there, and Harris and I think we figured out why.

I

m all ears
.

I turn
ed
toward her and
giving her my full attention,
deciding to ignore Tristan.

Am I going to like it?

Probably not, Chief,

she sighed as she spread her arms wide.

But it

s all I

ve got for you.

You

re right, I

m sorry.

I
nodded
as I took another swig from the bottle of rum I was clutching like a lifeline.

You

ve been great, Davis. I

m just…
W
ell, yeah.

I know, Chief,

Davis replied as she put her hand on my arm.

Harris said you hadn

t shifted after the meeting with the wolves when you got back home. I

m pretty sure you were blocking out your wolf so hard so you wouldn

t shift, you caged her so she couldn

t smell Riley.

So, you

re saying I was hiding my power
.

I
raised
an
eyebrow. It seemed to make sense
.
I just had to work through the mechanics of what she had just said.

And that

s why Riley couldn

t get a feel for what I was then, right?

Basically,

she answered
,
shrugging her shoulders.

It

s not an exact science, but I

ve seen other witches do it when they want to blend in with humans.

Alright, thanks, Davi
s.

I nodd
ed,
t
rying to wrap my head around everything right now seemed to prove really difficult. When all else fails, back to work
.

O
nce you guys are done with Riley, I think that

s it for tonight.

The
y

re
done with me
,

Riley
informed me
from the doorway. Before I even realized what I was doing, I handed Davis the bottle of rum and went for him. He caught me just in time as I jumped into his arms and mashed ou
r
mouths together.
I could feel the heat between us growing, and
Riley
must have felt the same because he
turned and pushed me against the wall of the kitchen as I wrapped my arms
around his neck
and
my
legs
over his hips
, deepening the kiss
.

Almost as fast we were pulled apart, I wasn

t able to get my feet back under me in time and landed
hard on the
tiled
floor
on my ass. Looking up, I realized Tristan had ripped Riley away from me and thrown him across the kitchen. Riley was back up and crouched into fighting position. Tristan had most of his back to me, but I could see his hands had shifted into claws.

Enough!

I
yelled as I pulled myself up.

She

s mine,

Tristan snarled and that had my anger directed at him.

I

m no one

s, Tristan
.

I stepp
ed
in between the two of them.

I

m my own, and the quicker you get that through your head, the better off you

ll be. I

m sorry I had that reaction to Riley in front of you, but you don

t own me
. And until we figure out what we

re going to do here, I need everyone to act like fucking adults. I

m not a chew toy you guys can fight over!

I

m sorry,

Tristan whispered as he slowly stood upright.

You

re right, Sera. God, I don

t know what

s happening to me. I

m not this jealous, possessive person, I swear.

I understand
.”
I gently reached out and touched his cheek. He turned into my hand and kissed my palm.

There

s a lot of shit going down that none of us were prepared for. We just have to keep it together, okay?

I

ll try my best, I promise
.

H
e nodded
his understanding
.

I just cracked when I sa
w
you touching him.
