‘Sarah!’ he cried and she stopped and looked up into his dear face. He hadn’t changed. And the light of love was still there in his eyes for her. He took her in his arms and held her for one long moment of joy. Then they drew apart, but only a little, and they turned to face the sea.
The rising sun was lighting up the sky and tracing a fiery pathway across the sea from the horizon to the shore.
‘Are you ready, lass?’ he said.
‘Aye, Rob. I’m ready.’
He took her hand and together they stepped out on to the surface of the water, their feet barely skimming the gently lapping waves as they followed the path of light. The gulls saw them go and circled high above the bay, their cries getting fainter and fainter the further the young couple went from the shore.
Sarah gave one last sigh. She knew the time of dreaming was over. Rob and she were together at last.
