 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59
 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60
 And his mother answered and said, Not
so;
but he shall be called John.
61
 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62
 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63
 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64
 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue
loosed,
and he spake, and praised God.
65
 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66
 And all they that heard
them
laid
them
up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67
 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68
 Blessed
be
the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69
 and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70
 as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71
 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72
 to perform the mercy
promised
to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73
 the oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74
 that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75
 in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76
 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77
 to give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78
 through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79
 to give light to them that sit in darkness and
in
the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80
 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?

 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

 Their poison
is
like the poison of a serpent:
they are
like the deaf adder
that
stoppeth her ear;

 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O L

 Let them melt away as waters
which
run continually:
when
he bendeth
his bow to shoot
his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

 As a snail
which
melteth, let
every one of them
pass away:
like
the untimely birth of a woman,
that
they may not see the sun.
9
 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in
his
wrath.
10
 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11
 So that a man shall say, Verily
there is
a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.
12
 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13
 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the L
ORD
to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
2
 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding
in his tents
according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.
3
 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
4
 he hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling
into a trance,
but having his eyes open:
5
 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob,
and
thy tabernacles, O Israel!
6
 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the L
ORD
hath planted,
and
as cedar trees beside the waters.
7
 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed
shall be
in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.
8
 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce
them
through with his arrows.
9
 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed
is
he that blesseth thee, and cursed
is
he that curseth thee.
10
 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed
them
these three times.
11
 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the L
ORD
hath kept thee back from honour.
12
 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying,
13
 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the L
ORD
, to do
either
good or bad of mine own mind;
but
what the L
ORD
saith, that will I speak?
14
 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come
therefore, and
I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
15
 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
16
 he hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High,
which
saw the vision of the Almighty, falling
into a trance,
but having his eyes open:
17
 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
18
 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
19
 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
20
 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek
was
the first of the nations; but his latter end
shall be
that he perish for ever.
21
 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock.
22
 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.
23
 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!
24
 And ships
shall come
from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.
25
 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.
25:

 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2
 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3
 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the L
ORD
was kindled against Israel.
4
 And the L
ORD
said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the L
ORD
against the sun, that the fierce anger of the L
ORD
may be turned away from Israel.
5
 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.
6
 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who
were
weeping
before
the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7
 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw
it,
he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8
 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9
 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10
 And the L
ORD
spake unto Moses, saying,
11
 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12
 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13
 and he shall have it, and his seed after him,
even
the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14
 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain,
even
that was slain with the Midianitish woman,
was
Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15
 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain
was
Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he
was
head over a people,
and
of a chief house in Midian.
16
 And the L
ORD
spake unto Moses, saying,
17
 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18
 for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.

 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2
 (
And
this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3
 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4
 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5
 to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6
 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7
 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8
 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9
 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10
 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11
 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12
 And this
shall be
a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13
 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14
 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15
 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16
 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17
 And when they had seen
it,
they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18
 And all they that heard
it
wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19
 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered
them
in her heart.
20
 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21
 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22
 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present
him
to the Lord;
23
 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24
 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25
 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name
was
Simeon; and the same man
was
just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26
 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27
 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28
 then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29
 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30
 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31
 which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32
 a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33
 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34
 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this
child
is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35
 (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
