“You have taken five samples so far. Any more and she will be empty.”

That earned her mate a glare. “I am attempting to discover your female’s abnormalities that triggered such a unique reaction.”

“She is not abnormal,” Rhal snarled, and Cara sighed.

For two reasons: 1) She hated the term “your female.” And 2) Rhal seemed like he ached to pick a fight with
someone
. Anyone.

“Rhal, he’s trying to see why I got a tail when Maris and Rina didn’t. It’s fine.”

“He is taking too long,” he grumbled.

“He's thorough.”

He
is sitting right here.” Faim turned his attention to her. “Are you sure you wish to mate with this one? He is always growling. I have a nephew on Ujal—”

Faim’s words had Rhal growling, and she placed a hand on her mate’s arm to keep him from pummeling the doctor.

“She is
mine
. I have claimed her, and no other can take her from me.”

Damn, that was sexy.

“He does not have a sense of humor.”

Cara grinned. “No, he doesn’t. So maybe cutting him some slack would be a good idea, huh?”

“Fine, fine.” Faim sighed and truly focused on them. “Cara, you are healthy and fit. I do recommend enjoying the sea under supervision until you are comfortable with your tail. It is not dangerous, but it will take time to learn how to move beneath the waves.”

“Why do I have a tail and the others don’t?” That was her real question.

“I believe it is due to the gradual nature of your transition. It gave your genetic code the opportunity to slowly alter. It has had no adverse effects on your body, and I do believe you are capable of bearing healthy hatchlings when you desire.”

She swallowed hard and relaxed against Rhal with that news. She hadn’t even realized she was concerned until her worry was laid to rest. “Good.”

“Good,” Rhal echoed, dropping a soft kiss to the crown of her head. “Anything else?”

Faim shook his head. “No. I would like Cara to return daily for the next few weeks to confirm her genetic code is no longer in flux.” The doctor turned to her. “You should rest when you feel the need. I am allowing you to return to work—”

“She will not,” Rhal snarled, but Faim ignored him. Mostly.

“—should you desire. And should you find yourself bearing, return at once, and we can modify the hatchling’s genetics so the child will not be so stubborn and difficult as its
sire
.”

Cara smiled, Rhal growled, and Faim winked at her as he grinned.

“C’mon, big guy.” She tugged on her mate’s arm, knowing he was quickly losing patience with the doc. Realizing she was healthy, that she could have Rhal’s babies, lightened her heart. Something she’d need in the coming minutes. “Let’s see the queen and then you can take me home and try to convince me to quit working so I can be pregnant, barefoot, and in the kitchen for ya.”

That changed her mate’s expression in an instant, the shutters closing over his face until it was a blank mask. She knew emotions whirled beneath the surface, but he hated others seeing what he considered a vulnerability.

“Yes.” He jerked his head in a nod. “I will ensure you return each morning. I thank you for the care of my mate.”

Faim tilted his head in acknowledgment. “It was my pleasure and duty.”

Then, because her mate was not the most well-mannered male, Rhal ushered her out the door without another word. No handshake for Faim or even a single word to Sece while he propelled her from medical and toward the transport platform.

The Ujal ship rested in Earth’s orbit and would transfer the queen, prisoners, and her guard through technology she still didn’t quite understand. One second the person would be standing before her and the next there was a beam of light and
poof,
gone. So. Weird.

And not something she ever wanted to experience. She was happy with a good old ship, thank you very much.

Tave and Rina were already on the platform, his high guards nearby while the queen and prisoners as well as
her
guards encircled them.

Cara let her gaze travel over the king and Rhal’s parents. They were no worse for wear, furious and disheveled, but otherwise fine. Fine when Rhal had been so much less than
fine
through his life. She almost wanted to kick them or beat them over the head with one of Rhal’s tridents.

Not that she was violent or anything.

The trio turned their way, varying levels of anger and sneers decorating their faces. Bastards. Asshole motherfuckers.
How dare they?

The queen slowly made her way across the platform toward them, but she wasn’t about to let Rhal’s parents disappear without giving them a piece of her mind. Tave’s
dam
drew nearer, everyone’s gaze on the ethereal female. Her scales and hair shined brightly beneath the sun’s rays and her appearance had stolen Cara’s breath on more than one occasion.

But right now there were a few issues to sort out.

Cara darted from Rhal’s side and strode toward the guarded trio, determination filling each and every step.

“Cara?” her mate called to her, but she ignored him.

Which was good since the guards kinda ignored her, and she managed to slip past them. She didn’t stop until she stood before them and let her pure loathing slide into place. “I hope all three of you rot on the sand.” She’d learned Ujal could care less about the idea of hell, but leave ‘em outta water… “I hope the queen does what’s best for Ujal and destroys all of you. You three are the worst of what Ujal has to offer. You’re the dregs of society. You may dress up and smile, but you’re nothing but trash. You’re whale’s shit.”

Rhal’s
dam
responded first. “Who do you think you are? You’re nothing but a little Earth slut—”

Cara got in the woman’s face, brushing off the first guard who tried to stop her. Then Rhal growled, and she figured he was the reason no others attempted to intervene. “I’m the woman who loves him. I’m the woman who stood by his side while you three were happy to see him put in jail. I’m the fucking woman who’s gonna have his hatchlings, and when you die, our little family is gonna dance on your pitiful grave.
That’s
who the fuck I am.” Her skin burned and stretched, and she had no doubt her coral scales were making an appearance, sliding free to decorate her skin. She really needed to learn control. “You know what else, you little pedo? I’m the one who’s gonna learn all of Rhal’s sneaky little tricks, and then I’m gonna—”

A firm arm wrapped around her waist while a large palm covered her mouth. She was lifted high and spun around as the male holding her strode away from the prisoners. Her captor lowered her to her feet and then spun her around until she was face to face with Rhal.

Dammit, she still had a lot to say to that bitch.

Instead, she got a kiss from her mate. Long and deep with their tongues tangling, his arms drawing her closer, and she leaned into him. He stroked her back, palms gliding over her until he cupped her ass and pulled her even closer. A low whirring reached her ears, but she was too consumed with Rhal to care. She didn’t bother paying attention to the whoosh of wind or the sounds that gradually rose and fell or the soft tread as they were left alone.

Nope, she was all about Rhal.

He gradually, oh so slowly, eased their kiss until they pressed their foreheads together. Both panted, sharing breath as they fought to regain control.

Finally, Rhal spoke, his eyes locked on hers. “You love me.”

“Yes.”

“You know me and love me.”

“More than anything and anyone.”

“You know the truth.”

About me
. But that part went unsaid.

“I know you’ve got a big heart, a sweet smile when you let anyone see it, and that you love me with everything inside you, even if you haven’t said it yet.”

“I do?”

Cara nodded, knowing she spoke the truth. “You do.”

He sighed, his eyes drifting closed, and she let the sounds surrounding them soothe her. The world went on, life never stopped no matter the drama, and now they had a little less of that in their lives.

The past was gone, dragged from Earth and shuttled off to Ujal to face the queen’s justice.

Now they could move on.

Together.
