“You don’t have a wife.”
Seth banged his head
against the steering wheel. Of course Dom didn’t know. All of a sudden, the
closeness and companionship he felt last night were a distant memory. “I do.”
Domenico stilled,
staring at his feet on the dashboard. He went very quiet, and his face shut
down. “Okay...”
“I didn’t want to marry
her… It’s complicated.” Seth brushed his fingers over Dom’s thigh.
Domenico stiffened under
the touch. “Am I like your side project?”
“No. You’re my
everything. I ran away with you. I want a life with you.”
Domenico opened his mouth
when the door opened, and Theon stormed in with a plastic bag.
“I found those great
vegetarian sausages.” He squinted at Dom with a smile. “I know you wanted ham,
but you seem like an adventurous guy so I thought you’d enjoy that as well.”
Domenico swallowed, his
eyes already firing up for an explosion that was bound to happen. “So you
bought the stuff that
you
want?”
“No, it’s not like that.
I just thought that these are better. They’re made out of soy. I thought it
would be a nice way to repay you guys.” He gave them a wide grin, but Seth just
shook his head and started the vehicle.
He so didn’t need Dom
going mental on the guy. “I’ll eat it.”
Domenico reached out the
flat of his palm toward Seth. “No, he will pay us back by returning this crap
and getting me some fucking meat!”
“Jeez, Dom. I said I
wanna try it. We have other meats in the fridge.”
Domenico snatched the
bag from Theon and fished out a chocolate bar. As soon as he got a bite, he lit
a cigarette to complement the meal. This was not going well at all.
Theon stretched as they
pulled out off the parking space. “So, where are you two going?” he asked as if
nothing happened. “
Seth wanted to answer,
but Dom was quicker. “California.”
But when he looked at Dom,
he gasped in horror. The chocolate in Dom’s hand.
Hersheys
. Shit was
about to go down.
Domenico stilled, opened
the window, and spat out the chocolate before tossing the rest of the bar after
it. He took a deep breath. “Theon. You
really
want to leave us already,
don’t you?”
Theon blinked. “Now?”
Domenico nodded.
Seth groaned, giving up.
He had no idea how Dom always managed to get into conflict with people.
Domenico squinted at
Seth. “Bro, he’s leaving.”
Seth presumed Dom
thought all guys addressing one another in this manner were related.
Theon’s face soured, and
he took his time to speak again. “Just leave me at the nearest junction.”
They drove in silence
before Seth finally stopped the RV. “I’m sorry for this, Theon. I hope you’ll
have a safe journey.”
“Two dollars,” Dom said,
reaching out his hand toward Theon.
“Christ, Dom! Just let
the man be on his way.” Seth hid his face in his hand. This was beyond
embarrassing.
“Our money,” hissed Dom.
“He wasted it on some ridiculous product. Vegetable sausage. What’s next?
Vegetable
cheese
?”
Theon scowled. “It’s
usually made out of nuts and soy protein.”
Seth pulled out five
dollars and stuck it in Dom’s hand. “There. Happy? It was nice to meet you,
Theon. Just go and ignore this asshole.”
Domenico threw the
banknote back at Seth. “I don’t want
your
money. I want
his
!”
“But you’re gonna take
mine!” Seth raised his voice. He couldn’t believe they were arguing over two
bucks.
Domenico threw back his
head and laughed. “I’ll take all of Theon’s cash if it suits me,” he said, and
with that, Theon was off. “Yeah, fuck off, you crazy fuck!” called Domenico
behind him.
Seth looked at the
steering wheel in embarrassment and started the RV as soon as Theon slammed shut
the door.
Dom sat in the passenger
seat without a word, looking as content as ever and flipping through one of the
glossy fashion magazines. Seth was too pissed off with him to say another word.
Not that Dom cared. No. Dom would just do whatever he wanted. So fucking
typical. Then he’d surely act as if nothing had happened. He’d probably ask ‘What’s
for dinner?’, or ‘Wanna fuck?’.
And there it was. “What
will we have for dinner?” Domenico asked, raising his eyes at Seth. “Are we
gonna stop somewhere, or are you cooking?” From the tone of that voice Seth
figured Dom preferred the latter.
“We’re having nothing,”
Seth hissed at him, ready to release his pent up fury. “I’m too embarrassed to
cook!”
Domenico blinked. “What?
Why would you be embarrassed?”
“What kind of person are
you? The guy was standing in the middle of nowhere. Have some humanity! And I’m
the loser who just lets you get your way.”
Domenico shook his head.
“You’re one to talk, having a wife and all. You have kids as well?”
“Yeah, maybe I do! What
do you care? You don’t wanna hear about pregnancies.” Seth clenched his fingers
on the steering wheel and gritted his teeth. “I might just have to fuck her
again at some point. Mmm, I still remember her wet pussy.”
Domenico closed his
eyes. “Stop,” he uttered with a trembling edge to his voice.
“Why? You wanna go and
get some
real
ham?” Seth stopped the RV with a squeak of tires at a
small parking space by the road, right next to a battered picnic table and an
overfilled trashcan.
Domenico pulled on the
emergency brake, and twisted, his fist connecting with Seth’s face so hard he
hit his head on the window. A banging went off in his head and he unbuckled his
seat belt without looking. He still had stars under his eyelids as he rolled
out of the vehicle.
“Well fuck you too!”
Seth looked up at Dom, all hazy. He picked up a cup from the side of the door
without a second thought and threw it at him.
Domenico was breathing
so hard it seemed painful. His eyes were wild, two burning torches ready to set
Seth aflame. “Go on, there’s lots of pussy waiting for you!”
“Why? Is your tight ass
not on offer anymore?” Seth asked in a low voice.
He heard the door on the
other side of the RV open, and Domenico must have jumped out. Then there were
fast approaching steps, and Domenico emerged from behind the hood, his face
twisted into a scowl. But even with the wind tangling his jet-black hair, it
was hard to be afraid of him at this point of their journey. “What the fuck?
You’re keeping something that important to yourself? You’re fucking married!
Was it a civil union?” asked Dom, grabbing the front of Seth’s shirt.
“Because it doesn’t
matter! It was a wedding I never wanted to be a part of!” He pushed Dom’s hands
away. If it wasn’t for the fear of wrecking Dom’s healing face, he’d smack him.
Domenico shook his head
and pulled away, grabbing the back of his head. “It does matter. You’ve
committed yourself to a woman. In church?”
Oh, so this is what this
bullshit was about? Well, God hadn’t really answered any of Seth’s prayers so
far, so he could go fuck himself. “What does it matter, huh? It’s not like you
love me or anything.” Seth kicked the side of the wheel.
Domenico stilled,
blinking. The look on his face was that of a lost child’s. “I-- you can’t say
that to me,” he whispered as two cars rushed by.
“And you can hit me? You
can make me look like an idiot in front of a stranger? You clearly remember
you’re Catholic, but you didn’t even remember my face!” Seth gesticulated
wildly, raising his voice over the wind.
Domenico shook his head.
“It was you who started talking about fucking your wife. What the actual fuck?”
“Because you keep
annoying me with bringing her up! It’s a closed chapter, and you’re making a
big deal out of it.”
Domenico drew in a sharp
breath. “I don’t know! I don’t know anything about this!” he yelled and hit the
side of the vehicle with his fist.
Seth fought back the
stinging in his eyes. This really was the end of the road. Dom would never
remember what they’d been through together, and Seth needed to build something
new with him. If he weren’t so annoyed with the bastard, he would have
comforted him, but for now he really didn’t want to touch him. As if the
situation wasn’t bad enough already, raindrops started dotting Seth’s skin.
“So what? You’re gonna
hit me next time you’re annoyed again? I’m not bisexual! That wedding was
fucking traumatic for me,” he hissed and hugged himself.
Domenico bit his lip.
“That was different. I don’t want you talking about other people like this.” He
slowly approached Seth, shoulders slouched in defeat.
Seth took a step back,
pushed away by the wind. “And I don’t want to have to argue with you all the
time. You can ask me things in a normal way.”
Domenico put his hands
in his pockets and looked away. With the wind tossing his hair about, it was
hard to see his face. “It didn’t occur to me you could be married, especially
after yesterday.”
Seth felt heat rushing
to his cheeks despite the cold rain hitting his body with bigger droplets. “My
father wanted an allegiance with a boss from Calabria. It didn’t occur to him
that I might not be into tiny cute blondes.”
Domenico drew back,
hitting the RV with his shoulders. “I’m sorry,” he whispered as the rain grew
thicker, quickly slicking his dark hair and pulling it down his face.
“Yeah. So that’s the
story. It’s not like I’m ever gonna see her again.” Whatever happened, Dom
would be the only constant in Seth’s life.
Domenico gave a weak nod
as the drenched clothes started hugging his body tightly. The rain became so
heavy it felt like there was dirty glass between them, and the fabric on Seth’s
body started weighing him down unpleasantly.
Domenico dragged his
hands down his face in a futile attempt to get the water off. “I just wish I
could know it all.”
Seth sighed and crossed
the distance between them. “I know,” he said and wrapped his arm around Dom’s
shoulders. “Let’s go in, we’re drenched.” Seth opened the door on the side of
the RV. Shame now soaked his body just like the rain. He shouldn’t have taken
out his frustration on Dom. If an accident like the amnesia happened to
him
,
Dom would have taken care of everything. He had to go with what Dom wanted for
a while before things settled down.
Seth kept selfishly
pondering his loss, and his pain, but it was probably harder for Domenico. It
was Dom who didn’t remember his own life, yet knew it was there like an itch he
couldn’t scratch.
“Why aren’t you wearing
your engagement ring then?” asked Dom, following Seth into the vehicle
Seth stilled for a
moment before shutting the door. Was this the day of fucking hard questions? He
took off his wet sweater to give himself some more time to find a good way to
explain it. ‘Because I don’t know if you’re the man I got engaged to’ wouldn’t
cut it.
“I just… don’t know if
it’s appropriate,” he muttered.
Domenico rushed to the
hanger and slipped his hand into Seth’s leather jacket. He was dripping water
all over the place, but Seth just stared at him as he pulled out the signet.
Pale amber eyes locked on Seth’s face.
“I want you to.”
Seth swallowed with a
heavy feeling crushing his chest. “Why? You know that after a month?” he
muttered.
Domenico walked over and
grabbed Seth’s left hand. “Things need to fall into place,” he said with
determination. His eyes burned with a familiar glow.
Seth had to look away,
slightly intimidated by Dom’s intensity, but his gaze fell to the gold chain on
Dom’s neck. It held the cross pendant Seth had gotten for him. To protect him. That
didn’t work out so well. “I need that,” he whispered and let Dom slip on the
ring. It burned his cold skin, embracing the finger protectively.
A small smile ghosted
across Dom’s lips as he massaged Seth between the thumb and index finger.
“There. That’s where it should be,” he said, slowly raising his face to look at
Seth.
Seth exhaled deeply.
“It’s gonna be fine, right? Between us.” He wouldn’t know what to do anymore if
his life didn’t include Domenico.
Domenico looked at him
with an odd determination but he nodded, and the warmth of his hand slowly
closed over Seth’s fingers.
“I love you,” Seth
whispered and leaned down to kiss the most perfect lips God has created.
Domenico drew in a sharp
breath, sucking in the air that caressed Seth’s mouth before they kissed. He
slouched against the wall and slowly pulled Seth closer, pushing his fingers
into the flesh of his back.
Seth closed his eyes.
His old Domenico lived on in this kiss. In the suckling on his tongue that made
him hard and the licks along his palate. He never wanted to open his eyes, too
lost in the moment, in stroking Dom’s wet hair, and in feeling Dom’s hands
slide down his back and to his ass.
