“Geez!” Mikael groaned as his cock invaded a woman’s cunt for the first time ever. “That is fucking unbelievable.”

“Glad you approve,” Layla said, riding him slowly, her voice sounding as fractured as his own.

“She is so fucking tight. It’s incredible,” Mikael said, moaning softly as sensation invaded him from all directions.

“You’re enormous, Mikael,” Layla moaned. “You’re filling every inch of me like you wanna split me in two.”

Philo groaned as he watched them. His hands were on Layla’s ass, rimming her anus, if Mikael knew anything about his lover’s tendencies. Whatever, Layla seemed to be enjoying it.

“Filling you with my love, darlin’, is what I’m doing.”

Mikael wanted to join in, to move with her and increase the friction. He simply didn’t have the physical strength and so he left her to attend to matters, just as she’d offered to. She upped the tempo, her tits bouncing out of the cups of her loosened basque, drawing his hands to them like a moth to a flame.

“We need to get those pretty nipples clamped up again,” Philo observed, still doing something to Layla’s ass that made her squeal.

“Mikael!” Layla opened her eyes very wide, looking totally astonished. “I’m sorry, I know I’m being selfish, but you’re driving me crazy with that huge cock. I can’t hold on much longer.”

“It’s okay, babe. Let’s do this together. I wanna come at the same time as you this first time.”
Damn, I don’t have the energy to move with her.
“Can you do this without—”

“Don’t worry.” She leaned forward and kissed his lips without losing her rhythm. “Lie back and think tiger thoughts, husband. You’re about to have the ride of your life.”

She sank all the way down, as hard as she could, and then lifted her buttocks, almost releasing him from her velvety-smooth clutches. Her eyes were closed, head tossed back, face contorted with passion. Philo’s fingers, he was sure, were inside her anus as he urged her on with throaty chuckles and light slaps.

“She’s a greedy little tigress, ain’t she, lover?” Philo said. “Have to punish her for her lack of restraint later on, though.”

“Sorry, master, I can’t help it. I can feel Mikael getting even harder inside me, and it’s driving me demented.”

“Yeah, darlin’, I’m gonna come for you,” Mikael groaned. “You are such a fucking marvel, I can’t hold out, I—”

“Shit, Mikael!”

She closed the walls of her vagina around his cock, milking it as she rode the thick heat of his erection and screamed his name. Never had a situation called for hard fucking as desperately as this one did. But all Mikael could manage was a halfhearted thrust of his hips as he ejaculated deep inside her, spluttering and swearing as his orgasm hit him from every which way all at once. A shower of squashed sweet pea petals, thrown high in the air by Philo, showered over them like wedding confetti. Mikael’s head spun in delirium and he wondered how the hell he’d managed to live for so many decades without ever having a woman—this woman—in his life.

“Welcome to married life, darlin’,” he said, kissing her tenderly when, finally, they both stopped pulsating and Layla fell onto the bed beside him, smiling, laughing, and crying all at once.

Chapter Fourteen

Philo went and got a washcloth to clean up their mate.

“Let’s get you out of these boots for a while,” he said, pulling them off for her and then divesting her of the rest of her clothes. “That’s better.”

“Thank you,” she said softly, when Philo gently wiped her pussy clean.

Philo rejoined her in bed and felt like crying, too, as he sensed Mikael’s deep, healing satisfaction. His eyes were closed and a satiated smile played about his buddy’s beautiful lips. By ejaculating inside Layla, he’d started on the road to restoring his powers. How long that would take was anyone’s guess, but he’d heard other alphas say that the rejuvenation started immediately. It meant so much to Mikael to be able to cure kids who were beyond the help of traditional doctors. That was what he believed he’d been put on this earth to do, and he would have lived out the rest of his days as a mere shadow of his former self if that ability had been taken away from him.

“You okay, babe?” Philo asked, slipping an arm around Layla’s shoulders and pulling her against him.

“Shush!” She placed a finger against his lips. “He’s sleeping.”

“Yep, he needs to. When he wakes up, he ought to feel a lot stronger.”

“Is that all it takes?”

Philo grinned. “Regular repetitions of the treatment will, and I’m guessing here, be the doctor’s orders.”

Layla rolled her eyes. “Happy to oblige.”

“I’m so glad you decided to stay,” he said, gently running his fingers through her hair. “I know you made the right decision.”

She nodded toward his erection and laughed. “I can see that.”

“You’ll do more than see it once our lover here has had his rest.”

“You should have told me, Philo. I was really hurt by the way you treated me once he decided to cure Amy.”

“I’m so sorry, babe. You don’t understand—”

“Tell me about your brother.”

His body tensed. “How did you know about him?”

“Impulse is a small place.”

Philo was quiet for a long time. He
never
talked about Milo. It was too painful, and he felt too guilty. He’d never even opened up to Mikael on the subject, because if he did that, he’d have to address the issue of his own selfishness, jealousy even, that had been directly responsible for the death of his brother.

Philo expected Layla to encourage him, which would almost certainly have had the opposite effect. Instead she remained quiet, warm, soft, and pliant as he held her against the hard planes of his body. She rested her head on his shoulder, leaving him to make his decision without any intrusive probing.

Her intuitiveness made the decision for him. Hell, if they were mated they shouldn’t have any secrets from one another.

“Milo was older than me,” Philo said, cracking a half smile, “by all of half an hour, and the cheeky bastard never let me forget that I was the younger sibling. I was, too. I always felt that I lived in his shadow, no matter what we did, be it academically, socially, or when it came to leisure pursuits. He had charm by the bucket load and knew precisely how to deploy it. He was good looking—”

“You’re not too shabby yourself.”

“Why, thank you, wife-in-waiting.” Philo kissed her lips. “But if you’d seen Milo, in spite of the fact that we were supposed to be identical, you’d have been drawn toward him first. He was always the one who shone.”

“There has to be a leader in any partnership. I’m sure you know that.”

“Yeah, I’m not saying I minded. I loved the guy. We were inseparable, especially after our parents were killed. We looked out for each other, did everything together.”

“He studied botany as well?”

“He was the one that got me into it. He had a natural flair for anything to do with plants and their healing qualities. Me?” He shrugged. “I had to work at it, just to hang on to his coattails.”

She ran her fingers down his chest with a featherlight touch that caused his entire body to tingle. “Somehow I doubt that.”

“It’s true, but it never occurred to me to mind. Not until we got to college, that is. It’s tough for young shifters trying to hack it in the human world. Especially if, like Milo and me, we knew girls were off-limits.”

“I can imagine.”

“We were eighteen, and still virgins. Our coeds were starting to talk about us. About how we never wanted to go out and let rip with the rest of them. About how we never seemed to pick up girls, or get drunk like they all did.” Philo scowled. “You can imagine what they said about us, especially when the best-looking girls kept coming on to us—to Milo in particular—and we turned them all down.”

“Yeah, that must have been tough.”

“I’d had enough one night. Milo wanted to carry on with some stupid experiment we were doing, but I rebelled, insisting that we go and join our buddies in a local dive, hang out and have some fun. Milo didn’t want to go, but for once I put my foot down.” He impatiently brushed a tear from his eye. “You don’t know how often I’ve wished that decision back in the intervening years.”

“I can probably imagine.”

“Anyway, we went and as soon as we got to that bar a couple of real pretty girls came to chat with us. Milo, of course, was being charming to them. A couple of rednecks took exception to the girls deserting them and kicked up a fuss. We tried to stay out of it. You have to understand that if shifters are confronted, they revert to their feral roots and…well, shift, so they can fight back. We knew we couldn’t risk that so we backed off and they called us cowards. Then one of them pulled a gun and…and Milo got shot.”

“That’s terrible, but it’s not your fault.”

“Then why do I feel so fucking guilty about it?”

“For the same reason that I blame myself for Amy getting sick, I
suppose. If I’d done something differently, acted in a different way—”

“It wouldn’t have made any difference.”

“Precisely.”

“Babe, if you could only know how it eats at me.”

Philo didn’t try to stop the shuddering sobs that ripped through him. They were cathartic somehow. Talking about it to someone who understood and was simply prepared to listen without sitting in judgment made the permanent pain he lived with loosen up a little. She soothed him, stroking his back a bit like she would her daughter’s, he supposed, until he had himself under control.

“Sorry,” he said eventually. “Guess it’s bad form to cry on my wedding day.”

“And I guess you needed to get it out of your system.”

“Yeah, I guess so, too.” He smiled through his tears. “I quit college and hid myself away here in Impulse. Half the time I wanted to kill myself, the other half I wanted to go out and fuck the first woman I found who was willing, just to lose my shifter powers. I blamed them, you see. If we hadn’t been shifters—freaks—we could have joined in college life and Milo would have still been alive.”

“Of course that’s the way you saw it. Anyone would.”

“That big tiger sleeping on your other side came to Impulse when I was at my lowest ebb. He took control of me, put up with my abuse and self-loathing, and got me back to my studies.” Philo stared at the ceiling as he tried to make their mate understand just how terrible he’d felt during those dark, dark hours. “I love Mikael like he was my brother, especially now that I no longer have one. But no one, not even you, darlin’, will take Milo’s place in my heart.”

“Nor would I want to.” She smiled. “But what I do know is that Milo wouldn’t blame you and would want you to be happy.”

“You know that, how?” he asked, placing his lips on the top of her head.

“Because I’ve been there. Can you imagine how I felt when Amy got sick? How I blamed myself? Wanted to rant and rail at the unfairness of life? Why Amy? What had we done to deserve that?” Her eyes shone with unshed tears. “In the end, I just accepted that shit happens, and almost always to the good guys. It was either that or finish up at the funny farm.”

“You’re right. And I’m glad you made me talk about it.”

“About time,”
Mikael pheromoned.

“Hasn’t he talked to you about it before?” Layla asked.

“You understood Mikael’s pheromone?” Philo asked, sharing a look with Mikael.

She shrugged. “I guess I must have. I thought he’d spoken out loud.”
