“I feel a little out of
place.” Amy snickered in Adam’s ear as a guy just passed
by with a heavy gold chain that dipped down to the middle of his
chest where his wild disco shirt began.
“I never thought I’d be caught in a disco,”
Adam agreed. “But if I ever wear something like that you
have my permission to just walk away. Better yet I would
suggest running like hell.” He laughed with Amy as they
found themselves on the multi-colored dance floor.
The bright lights seemed to change colors
when the rhythm of the music did. They clapped their
hands and were dancing to
Car Wash

when Adam noticed Janet and Peter dancing across from them. He
pointed them out to Amy leading her over that way for them to meet
up.
The girls jumped up and down with excitement
when
The Hustle
came on. Adam paid
close attention as Amy tried to teach him how to do The Hustle.
“Right leg, back, back, back, together,” Amy
called out to him as they danced with everyone on the dance
floor.
“Busta move,” laughed Adam as he started
doing the Travolta move of the dance. By the time the
song ended he was just starting to get the hang of it.
The dance floor changed colors quickly now to
the tempo of
Jive Talking
by the Bee Gees, as the
Mirror ball sparkled on the tiles below. Amy started
doing The Bump with Adam.
“Jump, clap, hip,” Amy instructed keeping the
beat to the music. “Jump, clap, hip.”
“This is easier,” said Adam careful not to
bump her to hard.
“Switch,” Angie called out. She
danced with Adam as Amy danced with Joey.
“Hey, look at lover boy over
there.” Joey laughed as he pointed over at Bob who had a
pretty girl on each side bumping him. He had both arms
up in the air and kept perfect time to the music lapping up every
minute of the attention he received from the two hot chicks.
“This is a blast,” Amy said as they switched
back partners.
The dance floor lights dimmed and slowed down
in tempo. Adam pulled Amy close
as

Coolidge came on. He breathed in the scent of her body
and swayed gently in rhythm with her. His world was
perfect when she was in his arms. He lifted her chin up
with his finger and gave her a kiss with all the love that filled
his heart. He felt her body as it moved even closer to
his, letting him know she felt exactly the same way.

Amy and Adam had spent the morning upon the
Empire State Building. The view was breathtaking,
overlooking New York and all the miles and miles of
skyscrapers. Afterward they had room service make them
up a picnic lunch and headed over to Central Park to spend the
afternoon.
They rode bikes around Central Park, enjoying
the beauty of the gardens and all the statuesque
bridges. In Shakespeare Garden they sat on the twenty
foot semi-circular stone bench known as the Whispering
bench. Adam whispered he loved her from one end of the
bench and she actually heard it. Amy softly whispered
back and he nodded that he had heard it too. They were on a mission
to absorb as much as they could before they had to leave tomorrow
for their trip home.
“That was a great idea you had about the
picnic and bike ride in Central Park.” Adam shut the
door behind him as they entered the suite. He picked Amy
up and carried her over to the bed placing her down
gently. She lay there with her hair cascaded around her
face, her eyes opened wide with anticipation.
Adam turned around reaching into his suitcase
as he took out something and hid it behind his back. He
sat down next to her on the bed and placed a small box on her
stomach which rose up and down from her breathing. Amy
reached for it as she sat up shifting her legs beside
her. She gazed down to see Tiffany’s boldly printed on
the lid, then lifting it off gently and held up a gold open heart
necklace.
“It’s beautiful,” she smiled up at him
feeling tears well up in her eyes.
“I love you Amy Marie
Makowski.” Adam knelt behind her on the bed as he lifted
her hair and placed the necklace on her. He softly
kissed the back of her neck. “You have opened my heart
up to a world that I never knew existed.”
Amy turned around and looked up at Adam as
tears of happiness spilled out of her eyes. “I love you
too.” She kissed him tenderly, this man who she loved
with all her heart. He was her lover and most
importantly, her best friend.
Chapter 10
“Amy, we’re home.” Adam whispered
into her ear as he gently shook her
shoulder. “Amy?” This time he tickled her
side until she slowly opened her eyes.
“Huh?” Amy yawned as she stretched
her legs out in front of her, noticing that they were in the drive
way. “Oh, we’re here.”
Adam hopped out of the truck, opening the
tailgate as he removed Amy’s suitcases. She followed him
up the front porch, gathering all the scattered
newspapers. She took her keys out of her purse noticing
the house was still dark.
“It looks like Joey isn’t home
yet.” Amy said as she placed the key in the lock and
opened the door.
“I’ll run these upstairs for
you.” Adam bounded up the stairs taking two steps at a
time before she had a chance to make any objections.
“Thank you.” She hollered up the
stairs then reached out the front door to get the
mail. Amy yawned again still sleepy from the busy
weekend while she thumbed through the envelopes sorting out hers
and Joey’s separately.
Adam leaped down the stairs then pulled Amy
into his arms looking into her hazel eyes. “I guess its
back to reality.” He joked then changed to a more
serious tone. “I’m going to miss waking up next to your
gorgeous face.” He tapped his finger lightly on her
nose.
“Aww…you’re so sweet,” she cuddled into his
body enjoying his warm embrace. “I’m going to miss your
arms wrapped around me while I sleep.”
Adam hugged her again then kissed her
goodbye. “I’ll see you Amy,” he walked reluctantly out
the door and headed towards his truck.
Amy watched out the window as he left,
holding her hand up in a half-hearted attempt of a
wave. She closed the door as his truck disappeared down
the street, already feeling empty without him here to share the
afternoon with. Trying to keep her mind off of her
loneliness, Amy decided she would get a few things accomplished to
make the transition back home easier.
By the time Amy had showered, unpacked, did a
few loads of laundry and had a pot of chili simmering on the stove,
she heard Joey as he came in the front door.
“Honey, I’m home.” He hollered as
he dropped his duffle bag of equipment and suitcase at the door,
throwing his keys on the table.
“I was starting to get
worried.” Amy came into the living room still wearing an
apron and holding a wooden spoon in her hand.
“If you want chaos, insert Bob then add
water.” Joey rolled his eyes and threw his arms up in
the air. “I could have strangled him. We
missed our flight because of him.”
“What the hell happened?” Amy sat
down on the arm of the couch.
“I hadn’t seen Bob since the night at the
disco when he left with those two chicks.”
“Uh-oh,” said Amy as she tilted her head
curiously waiting for Joey to finish the story. “I hope
he didn’t get himself into more trouble. He’s already on
probation.”
“Exactly, here I am worried all morning that
he could be in some serious trouble or worse.” Joey
continued as he sat down on the couch by Amy. “He
strolled in late this morning without a care in the world, looking
like he hadn’t slept all night. And from the wild story
he told me my assumption was right.” Joey chuckled as he
recalled the antics of Bob’s night. “Then to top it off
Angie got mad at me because she didn’t think it was as humorous as
I did.”
“Joey Makowski, you better watch
yourself. You are lucky to have a woman like Angie by
your side.” Amy scolded her brother pointing the spoon
at him. “Don’t give her any reasons to worry about you
when you’re away.”
“Hey, I didn’t do anything! You’re
yelling at the wrong person.” Joey hid behind his arms
pretending to protect himself. “I’m just the
messenger.”
The telephone rang just in time to interrupt
any more lecturing from Amy. She gave him a look with
her eyes warning him to heed her words as she ran to answer it
hoping it was Adam.
“Hi Amy,” Janet’s voice was on the other
end. “I just wanted to make sure you’re all got home
fine.”
“Yes, we are all home safe and sound,” Amy
said as she watched Joey ladle himself a big bowl of
chili. “A little jet lagged but it was well worth
it.”
“I was just telling Luke this morning how
much fun we all had.” Janet explained.
“Luke?” Amy questioned thinking
she must have heard her incorrectly.
“Yes, Luke. I thought I mentioned
him to you. Maybe I forgot.” Janet paused for
a moment. “I met him at a party last week. My
friend from work had a big premiere party for the
show. He introduced me to his cousin and the rest his
history. He is a New York firefighter. You
know how I love a man in uniform.”
“I see, will that’s great.” Amy
was still puzzled by the complexity of her story. “Did
you and Peter break up?”
“No, I still see him when he is in town,”
explained Janet. “We’re not exclusive. Honey,
my mom didn’t raise a fool. I’m not ready to settle down
with just one man yet, especially since he is on the road so
often.
“Wow aren’t you just the liberated
woman.” Amy teased realizing only Janet could have her
cake and eat it too.
“I’m glad you all came up to
Manhattan. We will definitely have to do it
again.” Janet suggested. “If you ever want to
come to visit you can stay at my place.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Amy said
as she cut some French bread and handed it to Joey who was taking
some more chili.
“Well it was nice talking to you,” Janet
concluded the conversation. “Luke is ready to go out to
dinner now. Say hi to everybody for me.”
“Bye.” Amy hung up the phone
smiling. Janet sure had come a long way in
life. Who’d of ever thought the girl she used to help
bale hay with would become an actress in New York
City. She couldn’t wait to see her on My Generations
when it aired on television.
The phone rang again just as Amy had hung the
receiver up. “What did you forget to tell me
now?” Amy laughed as she answered it again.
“Amy?” Adam sounded like he had
dialed the wrong number.
“I thought it was Janet calling
back. But I’m sure glad it’s you. I miss you
so much.” Amy confessed as she sat down in the chair,
playing with an orange from the fruit bowl on the kitchen
table.
“I miss you too. That’s why I was
calling. Do you want to go out to dinner?”
“I just made a pot of chili.” Amy
answered as she wound the phone cord around her
wrist. “Do you want to come over and have dinner
here?” She stuck her tongue out at Joey who was sitting
there mocking her.
“That sounds great.” Adam said as
Amy heard rustling in the background. “I have some ice
cream in the freezer. I’ll bring it over for
dessert. See you in a few minutes.”
“Okay. I’ll be
waiting.” Amy hung up the phone shaking her head at
Joey, who was still imitating her. “You know sometimes
you can be a complete ass.”

Amy worked up the soil with the little, hand
shovel, turning the warm ground over and chopping it up loosely.
She loved to be outside on a beautiful, sunny day such as
today. She dug a hole, put a shovel of fertilizer in it
and planted the last red geranium. She stood up wiping
her hands on her pants and admired how nice the flower garden
looked. She turned around just as Angie was pulling up
in front of the house.
“Hi Angie.” Amy gathered up all
her materials and placed them on the porch. “Come on
in. I’ll get us a pop to drink.”
Amy led Angie into the kitchen and took two
bottles of Diet Pepsi out of the refrigerator. She
opened them and motioned for her to sit down at the
table. Amy noticed that she didn’t have her usual
make-up on, although she didn’t need it, her beauty came
naturally.
“Amy, I’m sorry to bother you,” Angie said as
she held her hands together trying to stop them from
shaking. “But I really have no one else to talk
too.”
“What’s wrong,” Amy asked seeing that
something was definitely upsetting her to the point of tears.
“It’s Joey,” she started out slowly realizing
that this was his sister she was talking to as well as her
friend. “I….I”, she paused. “I think he isn’t
being totally honest with me.”
“What do you mean,” Amy placed her hand on
hers with concern.
“I think he is sleeping with another woman,”
she blurted out followed by a flood of tears.
“I am so sorry.” Amy got up and
wrapped her arms around Angie, who was now sobbing
uncontrollably. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“I called his room late last night because I
was missing him so much. Another woman answered the
phone,” she continued in between sobs.
“Did you actually talk to
Joey?” Amy went in the living room and came back with a
box of Kleenex.
Angie nodded her head yes as she took a
couple tissues and blew her nose. “At first he started
out with some story about just having a few drinks and signing some
autographs after the game. I just hung up on him because
I couldn’t bear to hear anymore. After that he continued
to call back apologizing over and over again.”
“Oh boy,” Amy’s heart sank as she heard the
last part of what she said. If there was one thing Amy
knew about her brother, he would never apologize for something he
hadn’t done. “I am so, so sorry. Is there anything I can
do for you?”
