On top of the snow, thousands of black birds laid dead, bits of purple mist escaping through their shiny small beaks. Ethan’s turning brought this on, Emma decided. Logan was right; this was all because of him.

Emma turned back to Ethan but had no words. The horrible thing had indeed happened. Everything was going to change, Emma thought, and now nothing would
ever
be the same.

Epilogue

A slim woman stood in front of a large bay window of a house that sat on a cliff overlooking the dark blue sea below. The sea’s breeze trickled in through a crack in the window, sounding like whispering voices.

She was staring down at a group of seagulls feasting on a dead dog that had been killed by a wild animal. The tea cup she was drinking from was still warm in her hand as she waited for an important arrival.

As if on cue, the back door swung open and a man stepped through. A large candle on the fireplace’s mantle huffed out as he slammed the door shut behind him.

He made his way to the front of the living room, the floor creaking beneath him.  The man stood a good few feet from the woman. He didn’t want to be too close since the news he had for her wasn’t very pleasant at all.

“Did you take care of the twins?” she asked.

“No. Craven Bell was after them as well. It looks like this isn’t going to be as easy as we thought,” the man explained, shoveling sugar cubes into his coat pocket from the tea table.

“Then you’re just going to have to try harder.”

“I—I will. And I will not let you down a-again,” he stuttered.

“I trust that you won’t, because if we don’t succeed, we’re going to have a very big problem.”

“I will update you when things have progressed.”

“I look forward to hearing from you,” she said.

The man turned hastily and headed for the back door, leaving the woman alone again, looking out of the window.

She smiled as the back door closed with a snap. She took a long sip of her tea as she continued to watch the seagulls tear the poor animal to shreds.
