The following two sets of statements will determine which Striving Style of your
right emotional brain
you prefer to use.

Use the following choices to rate each statement:
Rarely = 0; Occasionally = 2; Frequently = 4; Always = 6

I am a “people person” and easily develop relationships with others.

 

I enjoy socializing with others and making connections between the people I know.

 

I think it’s important that people are polite and mannerly.

 

I tend to overextend myself socially, having too many commitments in my calendar.

 

It upsets me when people don’t welcome or value the advice I give them.

 

I like to help others and prefer not to let anyone help me.

 

I enjoy giving compliments to others and letting people know how special they are.

 

I tend to make friends easily at work.

 

Socializer — Section C1 Total

I work well under pressure. I enjoy and am good in a crisis.

 

I am generally unaware of the impact of my behavior and actions on others.

 

I prefer work that lets me interact and socialize with people.

 

Adventurer — Section D1 Total

 

Use the following choices to rate each statement:
Rarely = 0; Occasionally = 2; Frequently = 4; Always = 6

I am loyal, hardworking, and predictable.

 

I enjoy the comfort and security of things staying the same.

 

I strive to do what is expected of me and am respectful of authority.

 

I tend to say no when asked to try new things, preferring to stay with the tried and true.

 

I am more likely to take on too much responsibility than shy away from it.

 

I prefer to stay in the same job or line of work rather than look for something different.

 

I am prone to worrying and usually imagine the worst-case scenario when something happens.

 

I tend to focus more on tasks and less on relationships.

The highest of the four scores you entered in the table represents your Predominant Striving Style. The other three scores are likely your Associate Styles. Remember, two of the Styles on your Squad must be focused in the outer world (Leader, Performer, Socializer, Adventurer), and two must be focused in the inner world (Intellectual, Visionary, Artist, Stabilizer). If your Predominant Style is externally focused, it’s possible that you picked externally focused Styles in each of the other three quadrants. The same is true if your Predominant Style is inwardly focused; you may find you have picked all internally oriented Styles.

Check your results, and if you need to, go back through the assessment and identify which two quadrants you use externally and which two you use internally to ensure you have identified the right Associate Styles. Modify the chart above as necessary. Keep in mind that the assessment in the book serves primarily to help you to identify your Predominate Striving Style and, as a result, helps you only to narrow down your Associate Styles.

Brief Descriptions of the Eight Striving Styles

Leader: I Need to Be in Control

As a Leader, I achieve control through understanding and deciding what has to be done; who has to do it; and how and when they should do it. I focus externally. I use reason and logic to make decisions. I plan so that things are done according to what I believe is important. I maintain control over people and activities. I direct and oversee others to ensure they do things right.

Intellectual: I Need to Be Knowledgeable

As an Intellectual, I achieve knowledge through understanding and deciding how something works, what something is, and where it fits with an inner worldview. I focus internally. I use logic and reason to guide my decisions. I plan according to what I believe is important. I categorize, inspect, and analyze in my mind. I build information data banks that lead to expertise. I order and accumulate information.

Performer: I Need to Be Recognized

As a Performer, I produce awareness of what is possible, then set goals and seek recognition for achieving them. I like to win and try to be the best at all I do. I have a quick mind that synthesizes information and experiences. I use insight and intuition to help me conceptualize solutions to problems. I focus externally. I see the potential in others and inspire them to go for it.

Visionary: I Need to Be Perceptive

As a Visionary, I produce awareness by perceiving how things will be, how they connect, what they mean. I foresee implications. I have images of the future and intuitive knowledge of what to do next. I focus internally—on my concept of a whole plan, a theory, and/or a pattern. I demand action. I have insight into people and their potential. I gather and synthesize information.

Socializer: I Need to Be Connected

As a Socializer, I produce relationships by connecting with others. I respond to the expressed or unexpressed wants and needs of others. I am socially astute and demand adherence to social norms. I disconnect from relationships when others don’t act “right.” I focus externally. I value others by comparing and contrasting them with myself. I express feelings with exuberance. I see harmony in relationships.

Artist: I Need to Be Creative

As an Artist, I produce relationships by creating a perfect, deep, meaningful bond with another person. I seek authentic expression of myself in life, work, and relationships. I destroy relationships that fail to meet their perfect image. I idealize others. I focus internally. I value myself by comparing and contrasting myself with others. My expression is self-focused; I think my feelings.
