“I don’t know what we’ll face in D.C. Lakeesha Laughlin is a tough opponent. Most likely, we’ll have a battle on our hands. But talking to Ray, I think there might be more people on our side than we realize. I have to try this, Robert. Don’t you see? I have to try and get our lives back. It won’t be the same, I realize. But it might be good in a new way. Even fun.”
He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, her beautiful, longing expression made the decision easier for him. But he had to try one last time.
“You might get killed.”

I could be killed staying here. It’s a chance I have to take. My odds will be better if you’re with me.”
He tried not to smile—tried to remain gruff.
“I might kill you myself, you crazy wench.”
A slow smile spread across Katy
’s face. “The French have an expression,
La petite mort
. It means ‘the little death’. It’s a euphemism for orgasm. You can kill me any time you want.”
Sounds good to me
. “D.C., you say.” He cocked his head at her. “What the hell. Could be fun.”
Katy beamed before dragging his face to hers for a long, wet kiss.
