“Are you saying you love me, Jack?”

Her question was blunt and inescapable.  He knew what she was doing.  It was so like her, and he supposed he would have done the same in her shoes.  He smiled and squeezed her gently.  He would give her the words she needed to hear, and then he would spend as long as he needed to show her that he meant them.

“Yes, that’s what I’m saying.  I love you.”  He tilted her chin up when she looked away and asked, “How about you, Faith?”

“Isn’t it too soon?  We’ve only known each other five weeks or so.”

She was scared.  He could hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes.  He understood.  She was right, after all.  They hadn’t known each other a long time.  How could he have fallen in love already?  He didn’t know the answer to that, and really, at the end of the day, it didn’t matter.  He knew what he was feeling.  He just had to persuade her that it was possible, that
they
were possible.

“I know it’s not been a long time, Faith.  But I’ve been around the block a few times, and I know what I feel for you isn’t like anything I’ve ever felt for any other woman.”  He cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to hold his gaze.  “You don’t have to say you love me if you’re not sure, honey.  Just tell me you feel as I do.  Just tell me that what we’ve started is something worth cherishing.  I can wait for the words.”

She smiled at him then, and her whole face bloomed with love.  He kissed her again, but before things got out of hand, she pushed him away enough to say,

“I think you are worth cherishing, Jack.  And yes, I want to be the one to cherish you.” 

She gave him her tongue then, and he forgot everything except his need to show her she was his.  The words could wait.  There was love to be made.  He rolled her over and began the seduction.
