‘Mom?' Edward, her younger son, had entered the room. ‘Surely we all need to meet her. Isn't she sort of family, somehow?'

‘Is that what your brother thinks, too?' Vanessa said quietly.

Tom, the older boy, came in and sat on the arm of the sofa.

‘Yes, Mom. I know it's hard for you, when … Marissa didn't make it. But this girl has done nothing wrong, has she?'

Vanessa shook her head, ‘No, she hasn't.'

Her gaze went back to the screen and scanned the smiling crowd.
