“You said the parents were coming, right?”

“Six of them.”

“Okay.  Seventeen Earthers dead.”

Caroline gave him a look.  Hadn’t they gotten past that sort of nonsense.

“I don’t know,” Dorsey said with emphasis.  “All I can tell you is that if this is a Salginian plot…”

“What?  If it’s a Salginian plot…what?”

“You’re badly overmatched.”

Caroline checked the time.  The HSPB vessels – including the transport carrying the parents would arrive soon. “Tell me everything you know about Haver again,” she said.

If mankind had been slower in developing a reliable means for colonizing the moon, and then Mars, there might likely be no U-Space.  If technology had been frustrated in attempts to extend the long-distance reach of vessels with the creation of the displacement drive and if the growth in population and destabilization of the human race on Earth had reached critical mass before those in power could do something about it, it’s likely that there were would be no Earth kids to rescue from Haver.  There would be no Haver.  Humanity could have dwindled into extinction.  Instead, mankind found a way to survive, because, it seemed, mankind always did so.

Changes were ahead, redirecting the fate of all humans.  The story continues in…
