“Did you talk to Father Thomas? Was he okay?”

“I didn’t talk to him, but he looked fine. He was walking funny though. He looked like he hurt his back or something. I waited until he was gone, and then I went up to Clarke’s front door. It was open, so I went in. Micah, there was so much blood. Was it all from you?”

“I’m not sure.” The memories were starting to trickle back—the soldiers, the beating. So that’s why his body felt so broken. “Amber, you have to help me get out of here. Do you think you can get Cody and Dustin to help?”

“Cody went with Grimshaw. Dustin and Jess…I’m not sure what happened to them. When Grimshaw asked Cody to go to D.C., Dustin got really mad and started to mouth off to him. He wanted to go too, but Grimshaw said that he didn’t need him. I’m not sure what happened next, but Dustin started screaming. I was afraid…so I ran. I know I should have tried to help Dustin, but I couldn’t do it.”

“I need to go after Clarke, and I can’t do that if I’m stuck in jail.”

“Just get a tag. They’ll let you go if you’re tagged.”

“I can’t do that.” Micah looked at Amber’s right hand and felt sick. He couldn’t bring himself to tell her. It was too late for her anyway.

“You need to get better,” Amber continued. “You look terrible, Micah. Maybe you should take it easy for a few days.”

“There’s no time. I have to go now. You need to find Father Thomas and tell him that I’m here.”

“Yeah, I can do that. I’ll bring you back some food too. I told the guard, Manny, that I was your sister and that you were all I had. He said visitors aren’t allowed, but I guess he felt sorry for me especially when I started to cry.”

“You cried?” asked Micah.

“Don’t flatter yourself. I was faking.”

Micah wanted to laugh, but it hurt too much.

“I pretty sure Manny will let me see you whenever I want as long as he gets to pat me down. He seemed to enjoy that.”

“What a jerk. I wish you didn’t tell me that.”

“Don’t worry about me, Micah. It’s the least I can do after all the trouble I’ve caused. So, I’ll bring you some food as soon as I can.”

“When you see Father Thomas, ask him to get some medicine too. He knows where to find it.” The room began to spin, so Micah put his head back down on the cot. “I think I have a concussion.”

Amber ran her hand across the top of his head. “I’m so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen. I promise I will do everything I can to make this right. I’ll find Father Thomas, and we’ll get you out of here.”
