The very best man.

Something rippled through her, gentle at first, and then pulsing, and it coursed through her veins with hellish fire. Was she coming? No, this was not an orgasm. Susan had had plenty of orgasms before. Little moments of vanilla satisfaction, that tingly sensation that spreads through your body for a few moments as you calm down again.

This wasn’t that.

What she was feeling was almost painful. What she was feeling made every muscle in her body convulse, made her sex clamp down hard on him, made every pore of her flesh sizzle. Her heart was beating so hard she was sure she was having a heart attack.

Was she going to die, right there, while Kevin was making love to her?

She shook her head at that last part. She hadn’t meant to phrase it like that. Not even in her head.

Then it hit her, as a wave of hot bliss swallowed her whole, and Kevin groaned and jerked as he came. She
was
having an orgasm...the wicked-hot-hellish mother of all orgasms!

Kevin writhed on top of her, each movement of his hips into her eliciting more jerking, more moaning, and more hot, searing breath against her skin as he dug his face into her sensitive neck, and kissed her there as his body slowed and finally lay still on top of her.

Oh my God
, Susan thought as she kept clutching him to her. The feeling of bliss, of complete satisfaction that glowed from every cell in her body, took her breath away. She felt so happy, so alive, so beautiful. She wanted to feel like this forever.

Kevin slowly pulled himself out of her, making her cringe and jerk as she felt suddenly empty. Still amazingly good, but she’d been so fulfilled with him in her, that his sudden absence made her feel like part of her was missing.

Kevin rolled over on his back and sighed. “I don’t know about you, but that was...” He stopped talking and stared up at the brilliant, cloudless azure sky.

Susan knew exactly what he wasn’t saying. It was amazing. The very best sex, the most incredible moment of her life. And he had given it to her. Her Kevin. The only man who had never let her down, even now.

She moved toward him and drew herself against him, wrapping her arm over his ribs, resting her head against his chest, feeling his soft, smooth, sweat-coated flesh against her cheek. He breathed in, deeply, then let it out in a sigh. She was pretty sure it had been the best sex of his life too.

Chapter 7

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT
, Kevin thought as Susan dozed in his arms.
It sucked!

Not that sex with Susan had been bad. On the contrary, it was amazing, explosive, he’d had to really concentrate not to just come the instant he’d entered her. He’d wanted her for so long, had had so many fantasies, so many pornographic machinations. He’d had to think about work: about Baroque archways and Roman columns, about the acoustics of the wooden theaters of Europe, about the facade of the theater he was working on. And only had six more months to finish.

He didn’t even know if he was going to make the move he’d been planning.

But Susan was in his arms, naked, writhing beneath him, kissing him like he was her only sustenance. He ended up losing the fight, losing himself in her, in her body, in her lips, how she’d tasted, the way she felt wrapped around him. How he felt inside her. Like he hadn’t lived before this moment and was just waking up from being asleep his entire life.

And as he came, and she’d been convulsing against him in her own rapturous orgasm, he knew it wouldn’t be enough. Being her friend would never be enough. Even if he were her “friend with benefits,” it would never be enough. He had had her, made her tremble, made her call out his name in blind passion, had lost his very soul in making love to her and loving her. But she would never love him. Not like that. No matter how many times he did this to her, no matter how much he would love her, she would always see him as just her friend.

As he slid out of her, his heart pulled apart as he left her embrace, and he knew he had to leave as soon as Liz got there. He had to escape before he lost his mind. But until he left he couldn’t just lock her in her room, tied to the bed...at least, not alone.

Susan sighed and kissed his chest, right over his racing breaking heart, her lips soft and moist.

He shook his head and called himself stupid. This would be his one and only chance to really be with her, to be her man, to be her lover--that’s what he’d wanted all these years, so he should enjoy it while he could.
Quit complaining!
He’d be up to his ears in hellish misery soon enough.

Susan was pulling her tank top over her fancy, sexy bra, and Kevin, still shirtless, was just pulling his shorts up over his gorgeous rump, when a group of children stumbled into the clearing. All about six years old, all holding hands, dragging along a rather rumpled looking older man in a tropical print shirt. His legs stuck out the bottom of his shorts like scrawny, chalk white chicken wings.

“Oh, dear...” he said, giving them both a keen once over. “I guess we’ve lost another virgin to the drop.”

The children giggled, not really knowing what the old man was talking about, but children usually knew funny when they heard it--or in Susan and Kevin’s case, saw it.

Kevin hastily zipped up his kakis and pulled his shirt over his head.

She didn’t want him to cover up yet, she wasn’t done. And she’d already started making plans, libidinous, sweaty plans--there could be whipped cream involved...or maybe just that king sized bed in her room.

“Come, children,” the old man said as he led them past Susan and Kevin, out into the clearing to look at the view. “From this spot you can see seventy different varieties of flowers and more than twenty species of trees.”

“And two architects copulating,” Susan whispered to Kevin as she followed him back into the jungle. To her surprise, he didn’t laugh. She was sure that would’ve been right up his alley. But he just walked, holding her hand, guiding her silently through the dense jungle. Susan was too preoccupied with trying not to trip or fall to say anything more, but after they found the trail and she could see the beach through the lush palm trees, she grabbed Kevin’s arm and made him stop.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” He didn’t really look at her, more over her head than anything else. She nudged him in the stomach with her fist, and he still wouldn’t meet her gaze. “Really, I’m fine.”

“Why don’t I believe you?”

When Kevin finally looked down at her, his expression was exasperated. His irritation seemed to melt, revealing more affection than she’d ever seen in anyone’s eyes.

The thought that slipped in and out of her mind was a dangerous one. It was the kind of thought that ended lives, or at least messed up good sex lives. And no matter how Kevin might be feeling, or how she might,
might
feel, she had only just discovered this part of Kevin. And it was new and exciting, and heart-stoppingly beautiful--and she was feeling selfish and wasn’t about to muck it up with all that mushy love stuff.

For the third time that day, Susan had to shake that word out of her head. Why was it popping into her head like that? What Kevin and she had had was great sex. Amazing, life altering, reality-bending sex. And that was what she needed! That’s what she wanted. Anything else was just too much to deal with right then.

Right?

But how she felt with him inside her, how she felt as she held fast to him...what was all that?

“Shut up,” she muttered under her breath.

Susan shook off her own thoughts, and the look Kevin was giving her, and started back up the beach the way she’d come, pulling Kevin behind her. She had to smile at the sudden reversal in roles. Just yesterday he’d dragged her down the beach, kicking and screaming, toward the sky and glorious freedom. And she had been powerless to stop him.

He really was all hers, wasn’t he? If only temporarily. But what did
temporarily
really mean?

That she’d go on to someone else...

Naturally.

That he’d go on to someone else.

Susan didn’t have a comeback for that one. She just kept marching down the beach, her mind trying to wrap itself around the possibility of Kevin being with someone else. It made her chest hurt, and made her head go all fuzzy, not to mention the cold chill that ran down her spine.

Kevin
,
find someone else?

Naturally.

When they got back to the hotel, Susan steered them through the throngs of vacationers, past the bikini bunnies frolicking by the pool--
put some clothes on!
--through the lobby, and straight to their room. The instant the door closed behind Kevin, she kissed him, pinning him hard against the door, her hands already pulling at his t-shirt, tugging it over his head, and diving back into him, kissing him so hard, so ardently, that she lost her breath.

Kevin didn’t say anything. For a few moments she didn’t think he was all there. It seemed he was lost in thought, and even though his body was responding, and she could feel how hard he was getting, he just wasn’t connecting with her.

So she bit his lip, hard.

Snapping out of his stupor, Kevin groaned and pushed her away by the shoulders, staring at her with a mix of anger and heat.

Kevin could taste blood.
What the fuck?
She’d bit him. And now she was looking at him with those big green eyes, filled to the brim with longing. Which was a hell of a lot better than having them filled with tears. And though he’d seen them filled with laughter and joy, seeing them charged with lust, for however short a time they had, was best by far.

He could watch her looking at him like that for the rest of his life.

He took it all in, memorizing every minute detail: the way her eyes sparkled, how her full, pink lips pouted, how her curly blond hair had frizzed out in wild angles--she was beautiful.

Kevin suddenly realized they were back at the hotel, in the room, and that he was half naked, and hard, and they were about to have sex again.

He gulped.

Was he up for that? Could he do it again without losing his mind…without dying?

Susan pulled her tank top over her head, and then pulled her bra open, suddenly naked, suddenly wanting him again, and so close that he wouldn’t have to reach far to snag her.

It was better than thinking about it. He moved to her, picking her up and wrapping her legs around his hips, kissing her deeply as he carried her to the bedroom.

And it was better. He forgot about everything: his heart, his soul, how much he would miss and pine for her. Instead Kevin lay her on the bed, pulling the rest of his clothes off, the rest of hers, and went about making her cry out his name again, making her do all those things she’d done in that clearing, all over again.

Kevin had lost all track or sense of time. They’d moved from the bed, to the shower, back to the bed, and into the kitchen, where Susan found some Reddi-wip and chocolate sauce, and went about making Kevin into a dessert. And he didn’t mind. Her licking and biting at his flesh made him want her all the more. It was a controllable feeling. But when she drizzled the chocolate sauce over his manhood, and a cool line of the whipped cream--and leaned down and licked and sucked it off--Kevin lost it.

She had a new trick, but so did he.

Susan gasped when Kevin swung her around and bent her over the kitchen counter. She felt his fingers first, searching out her sex and probing, one then two digits. He entered her, wrapping his arms around her as he slipped hard and fast into her, moving in and out with increasing speed as his strong, warm hands gripped and squeezed her breasts.

Susan didn’t like this position. She couldn’t see him, couldn’t touch him, and she felt suspiciously like a piece of meat skewered on the end of a stick.

She couldn’t do it like that. She squirmed, yet couldn’t get free from the hold he had on her. Couldn’t believe how impaled she was on him. He bit at her ear, and then slowly moved his mouth down the side of her neck, slithering his tongue against her sensitive flesh, until he was kissing and then sucking and then biting the back of her neck.

The jolt this sent thorough her, having his mouth so hot on the back of her neck, his hands now pinching her tender nipples, and how full and thoroughly run through she felt, it set her flesh on fire again and took her breath away.

“Oh God, ” she panted, pushing back against him, smooshing herself all the more against him. She came so hard her knees shook, and her hands clawed wildly at the counter top, grasping desperately at the edge. Yet Kevin kept going, not letting up a bit, endlessly rocking in and out of her, his hands roaming maddeningly about her body. Over her shoulders, down her back, around to her belly, and on down to tease her into moans so feral, so wanton, she felt her cheeks burn with shame. Susan came over and over and over.

When Kevin finally carried Susan back to the bedroom from the kitchen, she was curled up, naked in his arms, exhausted. He lay her gently on the bed, climbed in beside her and pulled the sheet over them. She rolled over, wrapping her arms about his torso, burying her face in his chest, her breathing light and hot on his flesh as she fell fast asleep.

Kevin was exhausted too. And though he wanted to keep watch over her as she slept, he drifted off to the sound of her breathing and the feel of her soft, warm, naked body pressed against him.

Yet Kevin’s sleep was not peaceful, not by a long shot. He dreamed of walking up the front steps of Saint Ann’s Cathedral. There were flowers and ribbons and balloons fastened everywhere. And the music for
The Wedding March
was just winding up.

Kevin felt a desperate stab of fear. He raced up the steps to the church and pulled the front doors open. His eyes couldn’t seem to adjust, and he stumbled into the sanctuary, the soles of his shoes scratching and clomping against the tile floor. He felt himself bump his shins on a pew.

Finally his vision started to came back, and he saw the packed church, the wedding party up front, and the bride and groom, front and center. Susan looked amazing, like a shining goddess, the light from a side window radiating down on her, making her look all the more angelic.

Kevin’s attention shifted to the groom. She couldn’t marry Mark!

As his sights honed in on the groom, he was struck to the core by what he saw.

Someone new. Tall, handsome, blond hair that matched Susan’s own. And he was looking at her with as much love as she was looking at him with.

Kevin couldn’t breathe. He wanted to call out, yell that it was he that loved her, that he’d always loved her, and always would. But he fell to his knees, unable to take in a single breath, not one of the wedding guests noticing, not even the bride. His Susan.

The last thing he heard was the priest ask, “Do you take this man...”

And Susan’s voice answering, “I do.”

Kevin woke with a start, gasping for air, covered in sweat. He had rolled to the other side of the bed by then, so Susan luckily remained asleep. Kevin left the bed and walked swiftly from the room, putting back on his discarded shorts. He moved through the main part of the suite, and out the French doors and to the beach. There he dropped to sit in the sand and held his head in his hands, his head splitting.
