“I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope,

against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.”

– Charles Dickens,
Great Expectations

To my handsome hubby, it always was and always will be you.

The past…

T
hey say your life flashes before your eyes when you’re about to die. And mine was full of mistakes.
Flash.
Worked too much.
Flash.
Drank too much.
Flash.
Didn’t tell her she was beautiful enough.
Flash.
My life with my wife and son should have been a glorious flipbook of laughter and beautiful memories.

It wasn’t.

Now, as the seconds drag out into an almost halted pace, I inspect each flash of my life—carefully and under a microscope. I could have done better. When Damien begged me to play baseball with him, I could have set my laptop down and spent those precious moments with my only son. When Chrissy asked me to replace the light bulb in our closet a hundred times, I could have stopped what I was doing and taken the three seconds to change it. When they wanted me to come home early from work for once instead of chasing the next big deal, I should have dropped everything for them.

Life should have been better.

For them.

And now, in the blink of an eye, it’s ending. There’ll be no turning back—no fixing things. There will be no more time with the two people I love most in this world.

The honk of the eighteen-wheeler screams at me as we’re engulfed in his headlights. With the announcement of his rapid arrival, the seconds find their way out of the molasses and free fall in the air at breakneck speed.

We shouldn’t have been driving tonight.

News forecasters warned us, and yet I wanted her to see
The Nutcracker
at the ballet anyway—a production she danced in many times before Damien came along. Tonight was supposed to be a family treat. A new Christmas tradition.

We’ll be fine,
I promised her.

It’s just a little snow,
I assured her.

Yet, the moment my tires lost traction on a black sheet of ice, I knew.

Life, which had seemingly just begun for us, was now screeching to a literal crashing halt.

My hand reaches for hers as I shout to both of them.

“I’m sorry!”

The impact steals the light in both my eyes and heart.

Gone.

Forever.

“B
ernice Noble?” the woman on the other end of the line questions when I answer.
