There is one more crop circles item I want to add to this Phase 3 section. If the events described were authentic, my conclusions about how the genuine formations are produced are fully validated by them. But there is one more matter to consider before I do that –- confirmation of the celestial path orientations suggested by the Meaden data.

Confirmation of the Timings Model

Immediately after I had adjusted
the global entry and departure path orientations
using the Meaden data, I looked for a different selection of reports, from the same area, to check whether the changes made could also be regarded as applying to the new selection. A book written by Arthur Shuttlewood, of Warminster renown, provided me with a suitable collection of reports. From the book
‘UFO Magic in Motion’
[6]
published in 1979, I was able to extract 22 remarkable events from the mid-1970s and then to plot the dates and times of these onto Fig.23, the revised Wiltshire/Hampshire timings graph.

As can be seen, a very pleasing result was obtained. The lines established by the amended global model seemed to be fully supported by the manner in which the times of those additional reports conformed. The seven points standing noticeably away from the lines were displaced from them by generally less than half-an-hour. After this, I felt bold enough to incorporate the fixed celestial orientations,
11:00 hr. RA
and
21:30 hr. RA
, into the programs for computer processing of events reported from all over the world. The results obtained, when these programs were widely applied to new reports coming in to me from many sources, will be demonstrated in the Phase 4 section to follow.

Proof of the ET Technology Concept?

My Japanese friend and associate, Kazuo Ueno, whom I’d first met on the ‘Blackbird’ watch of 1990, contributed a story to ‘The Circular’ magazine and this was published in the autumn edition of 1994. The story seemed to be so authentic that I decided to check out the timings of the events using my global timings programs. After finding positively, I wrote an article for ‘The Circular’, published in the Spring edition of 1996, to share the results. The story underlying all this was quite fascinating and tells of two events witnessed in broad daylight.

On April 15th, 1991, a Japanese boy, nine years old, who lived in the small village of Aikawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, had wandered alone away from the village. A glowing orange object had suddenly swept down from the sky and stopped only a short distance from the young witness, at an altitude estimated to be about 100 metres. The boy had seemed to be immobilised as a pillar of “transparent white steam or smoke” generated downwards beneath the hovering object. This pillar had then rotated and grown wider towards the base. When it had come into contact with the grass in the field a flattened ring had been produced in the grass, about 30 centimetres wide. During this process, the boy felt a warm wind and drops of water on his face and heard a low alternating sound like “gu-on, gu-on”. Immediately after the flattening, the “
steam trumpet
” had been retracted and the object had then shot off into the sky. The startled boy had then called to a friend some distance away and asked him to come to look. While they were looking at the ring in the grass, the glowing object had suddenly returned to their location and had proceeded to repeat the performance for the benefit of two immobilised boys. They watched as two concentric rings were produced in the grass, which the ‘trumpet’ produced by being deployed twice. The “trumpet” (rapidly-rotating focused beam?) responsible for the inner ring had been thinner and more dense than the other. Having completed its second mission, the UFO had then disappeared back into the sky.

What a wonderful example of the kind of things I had been envisaging and which have been described in detail earlier in this Phase 3 section. It seems that the atmosphere had been very moist at the time of the events and it is probable that the conjectured rotating beam of energy had created condensation in its wake and thus produced the ‘steam trumpet’ effect.

As explained in my article in ‘The Circular’, I had investigated the timing of the two events (16:30 hr. Japanese Standard Zone Time) and had found that one of the seven computer-selected paths passing over that area had a timing associated with it, which was just over 1.5 minutes within the stated time. In the following Chapters of this book I will be providing much more evidence of similar kinds of support for the Astronautical Theory.

PHASE 4:
Significant Global UFO Events

Having established the foundation of
the Astronautical Theory for SAC/UFO and Crop Circle events
from the happenings in Southern England, it was important, next, to explore its applicability to reports gathered from all over the world. A large and varied global database was compiled, aided by my many contacts and by reference to a number of books. The following chapters demonstrate the procedures and the typical results obtained. Very well known events are considered, which are shown to be explained by the AT’s scenario and predictions.

CHAPTER 11
I
NTERNATIONAL VALIDATION OF THE A.
T
.

After computerisation of the Theory during the 1990s, the basic steps required to carry out investigations of reports were those of establishing the geographical co-ordinates of each location and the Standard Time Zone applying to it. Unfortunately, this was, at times, a rather difficult exercise to carry out, because some of the places referred to were too remote to be listed, even by a good world atlas. If there remained any doubts, that report just had to be excluded. Nevertheless, a large database was created (piecemeal) from
reports never previously considered
and the prolonged task of checking then began.

Events in the San Luis Valley.

Through the assistance of the late Ms. Shari (Sharon) Adamiak, then the CSETI co-ordinator who lived in Colorado, I was put into contact with
Mr.
Christopher O’Brien, who was a pop-musician and a dedicated investigator of the strange happenings reported from that large valley. The San Luis Valley is a huge alpine valley extending from southern Colorado into northern New Mexico. It is unfortunately a practice area used by military aircraft which, on the face of things, might be considered to be the sources of some of the strange things reported. However, to be set against that suspicion is the familiarity of the local people with military aircraft and the exercises carried out. Chris O’Brien began by sending me reports in small batches and, later, a copy of his 1996 book,
‘The Mysterious Valley’ [7]
was gifted to me by Jennifer Jarvis, whose story will be told in Phase 6. O’Brien’s co-operation will always be regarded with gratitude. From all the O’Brien sources I was able to extract over forty good reports for the period June 1994 to January 1995. These are shown plotted by Fig.24, on the timings graph computed for a concentrated activity area. As can be seen from the symbols used, the events also included unexplained sonic booms and UFO-linked cattle mutilations. The degree of correlation on this graph is high and it would seem that certain tracks over the area had been favoured by the visitors.

The Australian Connections.

As the original database from which the AT had been derived had consisted of events predominantly reported from the northern hemisphere, it became very important to check out the Theory’s applicability to events in the southern hemisphere. A 1975 book by Michael Hervey, with the appropriate title,
‘UFOs over the Southern Hemisphere’ [8]
, turned out to be a rich source of reports. I was particularly pleased to be able to form a small database of events reported from the Melbourne area of South Australia. These covered the 1950s and 60s period
.
Fig.25 is the computer-produced timings graph with extra lines drawn in to represent those which the computer had been unable to print out, owing to imposed program restrictions. As can be seen from the plot, the points correlate well with the lines and sometimes follow the programmed trends. In this way, the applicability of the AT is adequately demonstrated.

Fig. 24

A point on the graph which could not have been included in Michael Hervey’s 1975 collection is the ringed cross plotted at October 21st. This event occurred in 1978 and the cross is marking the time of the last radio contact with Frederick Valentich, a twenty-year old flying instructor, whose Cessna 182 aircraft went missing immediately afterwards. At the time of his disappearance, 19:13 hrs. Standard Zone Time, the aircraft was over the Bass Strait with the pilot’s declared intention of heading for King Island. According to the detailed account given by Timothy Good in
‘Above Top Secret’ [9]
, Valentich had radioed Melbourne Control at 19:06 hrs to query the presence of a large aircraft flying below him. The response to that was a negative one. The unknown aircraft was displaying four bright lights and within a minute had climbed above the Cessna. Still, Melbourne Control had no explanation. Within another minute or so the SAC headed back towards Valentich from the East and then it proceeded to fly over him two or three times, at speed. After having given his flight level as being 4500 ft. at 19:09 hrs., Valentich declared that the object was not an aircraft. Twenty four seconds later he described it as a “long shape” as it flew past. At just after 19:10 hrs, Melbourne received the information that the object was then stationary and that Valentich was circling beneath it. The object was now displaying a green light and it seemed to have a shiny metallic surface. Less than half a minute later, “It’s just vanished!” Melbourne Control were obviously dumbfounded by that and at 19:11 hrs. they wanted to know if the ‘aircraft’ was still with the Cessna. A few seconds later, the response was that it was then approaching from the south-west. Shortly before 19:12 hrs the Cessna’a engine began rough-idling. Valentich then declared his intention to go to King Island and added that the strange ‘aircraft’ was hovering above him, but it was not an aircraft. Soon afterwards he opened his microphone to speak but said nothing. The microphone remained open for 17 seconds.
