From The Book of Prophecies

Three lives will be shaped. This will happen three times, in three different stages. We are bound by the rules of three, it is the sign of the Trinity. A time for change is ahead as the enemies will be brought out of the shadows and made to stand as one for the survival of them all. The shadows will no longer cloak them; the night will no longer shelter them. What we once fought to protect will in turn become the very thing we will fear.

Chapter One

I was still kneeling beside Nikkee’s body. I felt the blood from my lips slowly sliding down my chin. My eyes moved up to Jason’s; he looked both mad and disappointed. It was written all over his face. My eyebrows lifted, as I was seeing a lot of people standing behind him that I had not noticed before. They were vampires and werewolves and even a few witches in the crowd. I was not sure how, but I could distinguish between them with such ease. It was a knowledge I hadn’t realized I possessed before.

I hung my head down looking at her lifeless body.

Warm hands that felt familiar to me, grabbed me by the upper arm and stood me up.  He turned me around into his chest and held me tight. All my fears and regrets came sweeping over. It was Garth that held me close. I wasn’t sure why, but I welcomed his warmth with open arms as I felt myself crumble.

“She has lost a lot of blood, but she is still with us,” I heard Vex say.

A sigh of relief escaped my lips. I turned my head out of Garth’s chest, looked towards her, and saw Jason and Vex both lift her up.

“We need to get her out of here,” Jason said as Vex helped him position Nikkee in his arms. I was sure he didn’t need the help, but it was given to him anyways.

He turned around and started heading back the way we had all come. I stood frozen as I watched him leave. I felt a pang in my chest that he did not even look my way, but I understood that he had more important things on his mind at that moment.

Others turned and followed behind as he left my sight.  I looked over to where Marie’s body was still lying, with her eyes wide open and glazed over, looking up at the stars that poked through the clearing of trees above. The fog had started rolling through and was slowly creeping over her body.

“Do we leave her?” I asked in a quiet voice.

“It will be taken care of Trinity, as will the rest. Come, let’s get you back home,” Garth said in his strong deep voice.

“I don’t think I have a home anymore,” I whispered.

“You will always have a home if you know where to go,” he told me.

I turned and looked into his face. He still had a scary demeanour with a scar that ran down his right cheek under his eye, and his hair was a mess.  His eyes, however, had a gentle look to them, letting me know that I could trust him and that his words were truthful and sincere.

“I want to go where Nikkee will be. I need to know she will be ok,” I told him.

“Then that is where we will go,” he said and started walking the same direction Jason had just headed.

I forced myself to take a step after him, then another, and another until I reached the spot where Sky was standing with a few of the vampires, werewolves and witches that were waiting for us to leave.

As I reached her, another tear silently rolled down my cheek. I reached my hand up to my neck where I cupped Old Mother’s Tears as they sat warm on my collarbone. Sky gave me a hug and squeezed me tight, but I really didn’t want to be comforted yet, though I returned her gesture, more for her than myself.

We separated and started following Garth. I knew we had a long dreadful walk ahead of us and I was scared about one part in particular. I did not want to walk past the Site of Bones. I didn’t want to have to see the other life I had taken.

“Why is everyone else with us?” I asked trying to distract my thoughts from feelings I didn’t want to face.

“We were all fighting and then just like that,” Sky clicked her fingers, “it was like the other side just snapped out of a dream and woke up. It must have been when you killed Marie. The ones that were not under her spell and who were there of their own free will just ran. The others looked really confused,” Sky told me.

“Trinity.”

I stopped and turned around to see Lachlan walking up to me. I must not have seen him disappear in the crowd.

“Hey,” I said with a small smile.

As he caught up to me, I turned to start walking again.

“I owe you an apology,” he said.

“What for?” I asked.

“You were right. You didn’t need to pick a side.”

I looked down at my hands; I saw my nails had grown out into sharp points and I could still feel my canines pricking the bottom of my lip.

“I am all three,” I said as if I knew it all along.

“You said once that you just wanted to be on your side, Trinity’s side. I think you chose well before tonight, but it was tonight, this night, that you accepted your destiny,” he said with a proud grin.

I simply gave him a small nod of acknowledgement. He was right and I knew he was right; in the moment that I decided to accept who I was, and used that power to save my best friend, I knew the only choice I had to make was accepting that I was never going to be ordinary. I was never going to be just Trinity. I looked to Old Mother’s Tears for guidance, feeling the knowledge that I needed seep through my body. On the day of my 18th birthday, I was already going to be all three and that was what I had to choose. Choose to accept what I could not stop, choose to accept what was coming.

“The Prophecy said I would be their undoing and bring them out of hiding?” I said in the way of questioning him.

“You kind of did. You exposed them for who they were,” he told me.

“But it seems so petty,” I pointed out.

“It is.”

I let the subject drop walking with my head down, Sky and Lachlan on either side of me, and Garth up front leading us to where we were going. Behind us walked those who could be our new allies. They were quietly talking among themselves.  I wasn’t sure what the problems were with the vampires and werewolves, but I felt that after tonight, it would bring a few of them together. None of them were safe; we needed to look out for one another if we were going to survive.

The Site of Bones came into view, and the hushed talking went silent as we walked by the bodies that lay there. I focused my attention on Garth’s back. I didn’t want to look, but it got the better of me. I turned my head and made a quick count of the bodies.

I saw eight bodies lying lifeless, including the girl I killed. A pang started in my chest again. I was a killer.

“You did what you had to do, to survive,” Lachlan said and put his arm around me.

I just let it drop. I would think about it another time, perhaps when I had my feelings to myself. I walked ahead, letting Lachlan’s arm fall from my shoulders.

I reached Garth and asked, “Since you are Jason’s maker can you sense his feelings?”

He looked down at me, “Yes, I can.”

“Can you sense whether he is… can you know if Nikkee…” I couldn't finish my question as the words kept choking me.

“Yes, I can and so far everything seems to be ok,” he said, reassuring me that Nikkee was still alive.

“How come Jason can’t sense me, yet Lachlan can? If Jason is, in fact, my, master as well, shouldn’t he be able to have some sort of connection with my feelings and emotions too?” I asked.

“He can and always has been, more so than Lachlan,” Garth said.

A frown came on my face.

“He never told me he could,” I replied more to myself.

“Perhaps he didn’t want you to know.”

“Perhaps I would like to know who can feel me and who can’t. It’s like an invasion of privacy,” I mentioned with a little anger.

“Don’t be too hard on him. Maybe he just didn’t want you to know so you didn’t change the way you felt,” Garth said in Jason’s defence.

“Still, it would have been nice to know who is in my head and who isn’t,” I said.

“Well, while we are on the subject, I can,” he simply told me.

I stopped.  He did the same turning around to face me.

“What do you mean you can as well? How is that possible?” I half demanded.

His head tilted to the side as he looked me over.

I felt my temper rising as I realized all of my stupid girlie feelings have been on display for everyone to read.

“How?” I demanded with more force.

“Because I am the man that fathered you, Trinity.”
