They sang, smoked, played cards. More men arrived. They stamped their feet dry on the boards, shook water from their hats. Antonio! Leopoldo! Massimo! Arnoldo! Tell us, who had the foresight to begin picking in time to finish before the storm? Who will make the best Aleatico this year? Who has a vat to loan Roberto?
They all had to crowd in the doorway to see Paolo’s new motorcycle. And then they needed the warmth of grappa, more conversation, volley of jokes, and news of the world, courtesy of a one-legged, gray-haired man named Ricardo, who hobbled into the bar on his crutch just as some of the men were preparing to leave.

Murray gave up trying to understand what was being said and didn’t hear Riccardo report that an old Englishman had been found dead in his room in Portoferraio. Apparently he’d been dead for a few days.

But they were enough to draw a nod of dumb comprehension that continued even while the other men genuflected for all the anonymous dead of the world and then pressed on through other news — the price of tuna going up, the price of swordfish going down, and a new hotel being built in the hills above Procchio.
