“This is what you wore as a Guardian?”

“Yes, though this rag has seen better days. I thought it best to use some type of clothing less likely to be noticed, and this was all I had.”

“You still have some holes…” he said, sticking his finger in one near her waist and tickling. “Though that’s not such a bad thing.”

“Adam!” She jumped back and laughed. “I mended the larger ones, can you tell?” Tiva spun around slowly glancing at her pants.

“Looks fine to me. You seem very comfortable in that outfit.”

“At one point in my life it was all I wanted to wear. Now, I will just use it as part of my act.” She sighed and sat down on the bed. Adam followed and wrapped a wing around her shoulder. Leaning into him, she laced her fingers in his and closed her eyes. “I confess though, I am worried.”

“About the assignment? Then maybe you shouldn’t do it.”

“It is not just this…other things as well. Mostly, I do not want to leave you all here while we are in the midst of this war.”

“We’re not fighting now, in fact, we’re supposed to be on vacation for the next day or two. Captain’s orders…bet he did it on purpose knowing how I’d be when I found out you’d be taking this job.” He sighed. “I guess I can’t do anything about it now…so, how about we hit the beach.”

“Hitting sand will only cause…” she paused. “An expression, correct?”

“Yep, you can swim a little, we’ll go flying for real, get some sun, and relax.”

“It sounds wonderful, should we make arrangements?”

“All taken care of, m’lady.” He grinned.

“Did you know I was going to say yes?”
“I had an idea,” he chuckled.

“Then why did you ask me?” She rolled her eyes.

“Don’t look at me in that tone of voice,” he said and began tickling her again.

“Adam stop!” She squirmed and attempted to break from his grasp. Suddenly both wings surrounded her and he tackled her back on the bed. She locked her legs around his and twisted trying to knock him loose. His hands continued to tickle her hips, waist, and neck. Though, internally she was glad he had not found her…

I heard that.
Cala said.
You’re in trouble now.

Cala, no! Do not help him!

Before she could finish, Adam’s fingers began tickling the back of her knees. She continued to laugh and thrash about within his powerful arms. As she twisted, he moved with her. When she pushed away, he clutched her tighter.

“Say uncle,” Adam demanded.

“What does my relative have—” she burst out with laughter as his hand found the back of her other knee. “Adam, please stop!”

“Give up, say uncle, surrender.” He pulled her up, and wrapped his arms around her stomach, spun her, and pinned her to the bed. She looked into his eyes and the laughter vanished from the air. Tiva was helpless in his arms, but felt safe and loved. She exaggerated panting her breath and stopped struggling. Adam’s wings flared up behind him and he snickered. He leaned back slightly, loosening his grip on her. “Do you give up?”

“I have given up my heart to you, Adam,” she said softly and seriously as she gazed into his eyes. He stopped for a moment, and she grinned. “But I will not forfeit this match just yet!” She lifted a leg, caught him by the neck, and pushed him backward to his obvious surprise. His wing quickly retracted as he fell sideways against the bed. Still within his grasp, she struggled until she broke free, jumped on him, and they both fell to the floor. Sparing no second, Tiva kicked him back, grabbed his arms, and pinned him this time.

“I win.”

She rolled her eyes. “You always say that despite the fact that I bested you.”

“If you bested me, then how come I’ve got a pretty girl on top of me? Okay, then.” His wings encircled her and drew her close. “Besides, enough tickling and more kissing.”

Chapter Fifteen

C
aptain Maar held one final meeting with the crew, introducing Aries to the rest of them before ordering everyone off ship. Emerala and Raife were first to leave Base followed by Aliri and Ewan. Most of Tiva’s security staff decided to stay on, wanting to utilize the new VR programs and a new survival training lead by one of the Ambassadors.

Despite the Union being on alert, most of the people on base went about their business. It was curious to see the normalcy when the last few months on board the
Tolox
had been one fight after another with the constant paranoia of impending attacks. She was not worried though. Xatlonia was the best guarded planet in the Union. With Ovvella Base so near, the strongest and fastest ships were constantly on patrol or in orbit of both. It was a safe haven for the people of the Vexillum.

Tiva did extra research before leaving the ship, and was satisfied that several hundred warning buoys were scattered around the outer perimeter of Ovvella and Xatlonia space.

She needed to relax knowing the mission ahead. Adam hired a private escort flyer to bring them to a secluded beach on the southern side of Xatlonia. Far away from the hotel and beaches she’d visited. The first thing they did when they got there was go separate ways. Tiva needed to swim and Adam wanted to fly. She spent the better part of early morning in the water then ran along the beach for a while. The serenity surrounding her calmed her more than the swim or run itself. There was no vibration of engines, no gunfire, cannon fire, enemies or fighting. As she lay on the sand soaking up the warmth of the sun, the constant thoughts in her head began to quiet. Her body was relaxed and her spirits were up.

When she met Adam back at their room, which he called a cabana, a young Bayo woman was exiting. Tiva entered through the beach side seeing the cart of foods left behind.

“Room service.”

“Pardon?”

“One of the benefits of resorts, hotels, and such. You order some food and they prepare it for you then bring it right up.”

“Seems lazy.”

Adam chuckled. “I like to call it well-deserved pampering.” He motioned to the table and pulled out a chair for her. “How was your swim?”

“It was nice, thank you. And did you enjoy soaring the skies?”

“Always.” He grinned and pulled the cart closer before sitting across from her. When he opened the silver cover, all types of foods filled the tray. Small finger sandwiches, vegetables, cake and lots of it, chicken, ribs, pasta, and something he called tacos. “The ribs and tacos might be a little heavy for you, but I think you’ll like the rest.”

“Thank you, it looks wonderful. I see you ordered a few cakes, plan on eating them all tonight?”

“No, one is for breakfast.”

She laughed and put a little bit of everything onto her plate, and thanked Adam as he poured her a class of juice. “Do we have an agenda for tonight and tomorrow?”

“I thought we could just play it by ear…you know, improvise and be spontaneous.”

“Yes, I know. I am growing accustomed to your expressions…”

“Nifty, I knew you would eventually.”

They talked during their meal about her pending mission, and Adam offered several good ideas for fooling the enemy should she be uncovered. The more they discussed it, the less anxious she felt. Having his insight into the situation was exactly what she needed to overcome her cautious thoughts. He had done his own share of missions in his lifetime, so his advice was sage. Obviously, he wanted her prepared, so he continued talking until their legs went numb from sitting.

After they cleaned up, Tiva changed out of her bathing suit and robe, and put on a tank top and shorts that Aliri lent her.

Spending the day with Adam away from the rest of the crew and the ship was a joy she couldn’t put into words. It seemed as if— for a moment—that war didn’t exist.

Adam taught her a game called tennis, took her flying as the sun set, and to a dance in a nearby hotel’s ballroom. Instead of room service for dinner, he took her to a restaurant on the far side of Xatlonia. On the way out, she noticed a few Vexillum uniforms in the distance. She opened her senses to see if trouble was brewing, but the feelings surrounding them were cheerful and calm. Everyone was enjoying their time planetside.

Tiva sat on the edge of the terrace that led to the beach as Adam slept quietly behind her. They spent most of the evening talking or in companionable silence. The pale blue moon hanging in the sky was a beautiful sight, but not the one she longed for. She knew deep inside where she wanted to be, but feared what the collision of her two realities would do to her people. Knowing all she did, could she go back to her old life?

As her feet dug into the sand, she felt Cala speak softly.
Sleeping is good for you, you know. It keeps you sane.

I have been sleeping, Cala. I am just full of energy. The nature here is so alive, I cannot help but absorb it. Though I enjoyed falling asleep in Adam’s arms the other night, I do not wish to disturb him now, he looks peaceful.

That’s why he got a private cabin, he finds it comfortable as well, I’m told. He’d probably prefer to wake up next to you than alone.

Tiva chuckled slightly and began to unbraid her hair. The lapping waves of the ocean called to her, and she could not ignore it.
That is pleasing to know.
She paused, tiptoed back into the room to grab a towel, then slipped back out.
You are empathic are you not, Cala?

Empathic, no, merely telepathic and experienced.

She nodded, as if Cala could see her. But she was secure in her sheath propped up against the bed near Adam. She wondered how far she could travel and still hear the spirit-sword. Her telepathic abilities had surpassed that of her people. She was certain of the fact, merely by the distance she was able to communicate with Aliri. Still, with her mind that susceptible, it was difficult at times to block people when tensions were high.
It can be a gift and a curse...

Yes, I have heard.

I am glad that I can sense Adam more now. I thank you for that.

Well, he trusts you and he trusts me. So, I don’t have to work so hard when you’re around.

I appreciate that. Tell me, Cala, what are the customs of humans when in relationships?

Jeez, that’s a loaded question. It honestly depends on the person. All couples are different, you just need to follow your heart, but don’t lose your head. Is there something specific you are thinking about?

Not exactly. I have studied some human culture and their ways are similar to ours, but their courting and marriage rituals are very different.

Yeah,
she chuckled slightly inside Tiva’s mind,
I bet. The only thing I can tell you is to be honest with Ruvy. Lack of communication is the downfall to most marriages…that is if you get married.

I would like that, one day.

As he would, too, I’m sure.

Tiva smiled and glanced back toward the cabana. She would marry Adam if the timing were right. However, it was not something they had actually talked about.

Her thoughts lingered. The nature around her began to react to the changing of the temperature. The ocean’s scent was sharp but sweet. It was a tranquil night, a type she had not enjoyed in many months. Tiva stepped onto the warm sand, a slight wind rushed past. Nearing the water, she began to strip. Looking around the secluded cove, she waited and listened before removing the last of her clothing.

It is nice here. Abennelp has a beach like this, but…
Tiva sighed and dipped her toe in the water. Satisfied, she walked in then dove down into the water.

But?
Cala answered, impatiently.

Our moon is different. It has an unusual hue compared to those I have seen.

How so?

The moon has a silver aura, it is so bright during the middle of the cycle…year, that it is almost the equivalent of daybreak. And the mix of the moon’s light is almost a clear perfection of color, it is hard to describe…

Coming up for air, she glanced toward the sky and leaned her head back. The view was so different from what she had known, but no less beautiful. Sighing, she kicked softly in the water and began to float among the gentle waves.

It sounds nice.

Yes, it is. I hope I have the chance to enjoy it once again.

You will.

One can pray…

A few silent moments passed as the ocean carried her away from the shore. Birds and other winged creatures zipped through the air above her. In the far off distance was a bright blue sphere in the sky. At first glance, it looked like a star, but Tiva knew it was Ovvella Base. It was amazing to see the backdrop of dark space sprinkled with the distant stars. The base seemed the center of the universe.

Swimming back to shore, she felt Cala break the telepathic connection. Adam, however, was still sleeping. With a towel tightly wrapped around her, she went back inside and changed into one of Adam’s T-shirts. His scent lingered on the clothing. She smiled and curled up on a nearby chair watching him sleep. He was on his stomach, wings up, his limbs spread across the length of the bed. He looked too relaxed to wake, so she remained on the chair until she fell asleep.

“Hey, Tiva!” Aliri shouted from across the promenade and waved. Tiva returned the gesture and met her near the commissary. “How was your trip?”

“It was lovely. Adam took me flying, taught me tennis, and today we went hiking and had a picnic on the beach,” she replied.

“Didn’t do the deed then huh?” she said, her tone comical.

“The deed?”

You know…

Tiva’s markings pinked and she shook her head.
No, we did not…but we spent plenty of time together.

“Ah well, that’s nice too…” Aliri said, a huge smile still plastered on her face. “What are you two doing for dinner?”

“We have not made plans.”

“How would you like to join me and Ewan at Krikkie’s restaurant for a private celebration?”

Tiva raised a brow. “What is the occasion?”

“Ewan and I are engaged to be married.”

“Spirited blessings!” Tiva smiled and hugged her friend. “I am very happy for you both. He seems like a nice man.”

“Oh, he’s great. That’s why I want you to get to know him. We’ve been seeing each other for a while, but kept it quiet. I would like for you to be my maid of honor.”

“Maid of honor? Are you sure you have no family or other close friends you would like to ask? I have studied human weddings somewhat since Emerala’s ceremony, and I know that is a very coveted position.”

“Eh, I guess, but there isn’t anyone else I’d want at my side. You’ll keep me safe too so that’s always a plus.”

“Very well then. I would be honored to stand at your side, Aliri.”

“Wonderful!” She hugged back. “We’ll make plans and stuff when you return from your covert op.”
“You may have to guide me in what you need from me as I have never done this before, but I am glad to help.”

“Great. First thing, get Adam and meet us for dinner tonight. We have one last night free before reality strikes, so let’s take advantage of it.”

Tiva nodded. “I will. See you this evening, my friend.”

Adam walked out of a shop as Tiva neared. He winked and held up a small colorful bag. Curious, she sifted through the crowd of people and met him near a miniature fountain. They sat down and Adam told her to close her eyes. She complied, and tried not to smile, knowing he was excited about something. A few moments passed. She heard rustling of paper, a box opening, and an unusual scent in the air.
