The paramount obligation of a college is to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently, and the ability to live confidently, courageously, and hopefully.

T
hese words are displayed at the Honnold Gate of Scripps College, my alma mater (and that of the friends to whom this book is dedicated), and I am personally convinced that this is the last time the word
hopefully
was used correctly in an English sentence.
For the history and literature geeks out there—the de Vere Earls of Oxford (original creation, not the Earls of Oxford and Asquith) had no subsidiary titles, and so the invented courtesy title of Lord Bolebec (sometimes spelled “Bulbeck”) was given to the heir. And if a certain man had not moved his family to a certain town before a certain son was born, that son might have been known as the Bard of Snitterfield these four hundred years.
Much beholden for:

James J. W. Taylor, whose (definitely
not
tumbling-down) wall gave me an idea

Everyone knows Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, prospects, and her life to satisfy scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the mountains of Vystrana, where she made discoveries that would change the world…
