In the little garden next to the bridge, I picked some roses. For her. Red and white and the palest yellow. She said, ‘I don’t do love,’ but I think maybe she did. I let the petals flutter down to spread across the river, mingling with the ashes, to be taken by the restless current, borne away down the stream.
