The author faded back into sleep, wishing that his pillows were at a better angle, wishing that he had the strength to write down the story that was on the tip of his mind. He knew that when he woke up it would be gone for good. All the best stories, it seemed to him, had the shortest shelf life. You had to get them straight from the oven or they’d be nothing but stale crumbs later on.
