CHAPTER 2
 

• Emmett and Rosalie drag Jasper outside

• Carlisle stitches up Bella’s arm

Carlisle tells a little about his human life; he explains to Bella Edward’s belief that vampires have no soul; he tells her the story of Edward’s dying mother begging Carlisle to save Edward

• Edward is sullen and unhappy about Bella’s injury and the Cullens’ reactions to it

• Edward’s kiss that night is urgent, reminiscent of a goodbye kiss

CHAPTER 3
 

• Edward is remote and silent; Bella is frightened

Alice and Jasper have gone away; Edward doesn’t stay with her the next two nights

• Edward takes Bella to the edge of the woods to have a talk

Edward says his family is leaving; he makes Bella promise not to do anything reckless or foolish, in return promising that after he leaves, it will be as if he never existed; Bella tries to follow him into the forest but gets lost and collapses; hours later Bella is found by Sam Uley

• October–November–December–January: Bella is like a zombie

CHAPTER 4
 

• Charlie threatens to send Bella to her mother in Florida

Bella is lifeless; she screams in her sleep; Charlie thinks maybe Renée can help

• To placate Charlie, Bella asks Jessica to go to a movie with her

• Bella and Jessica walk down the street to get some food

They pass a bar and see four men standing outside; Bella approaches them; they seem familiar; she feels a rush of adrenaline

• Bella hears Edward’s voice, angry and concerned

Bella comes out of the lifeless haze, her senses awake

• That night Bella feels the nightly pain like a huge hole punched through her chest—it is hard to breathe

CHAPTER 5
 

• Bella is out of the numbness, but still has nightmares of nothingness; she holds herself tightly together

• Bella realizes that she doesn’t need to keep her promise to Edward

Bella wants to be reckless and stupid; she finds two free, broken-down motorcycles and takes them to Jacob Black to be repaired

CHAPTER 6
 

• Bella starts spending time with Jacob

Bella is surprised to hear herself laugh; Jacob carries happiness like an aura—an earthbound sun; Charlie is cautiously relieved to see her happy

• Bella makes a comment at lunch in the cafeteria; her friends are stunned

CHAPTER 7
 

• Bella drives to Edward’s house to see if she will hear his voice again—nothing


Jacob finishes the motorcycles

While driving the bikes out to a secluded riding place, Bella sees four boys on a cliff overlooking the water; one jumps off; Jacob explains that the boys are just cliff diving, that it’s an adrenaline rush; Bella wants to give cliff diving a try; Jacob says the boys are Sam Uley’s gang; he seems worried and frightened

• Bella realizes that Jacob likes her as more than just a friend

CHAPTER 8
 

• Jacob instructs Bella how to ride the motorcycle

• As soon as Bella lets go of the clutch, she hears Edward’s angry voice

The motorcycle falls on top of her, but she is eager to try again; the second attempt goes better; she hears Edward’s voice several times; she crashes and cuts her head; she apologizes to Jacob for bleeding

• After several days of accidents and injuries, Bella and Jacob decide to try hiking—Bella wants to see Edward’s meadow again

CHAPTER 9
 

• Bella’s time is filled with school, work, and Jacob

• Mike invites Bella to a movie; she turns it into a group activity; she invites Jacob and Quil

Everyone backs out or comes down with the flu except Mike and Jacob; Mike gets sick during the movie

• Jacob tells Bella he will always be there for her

Bella doesn’t want to lead Jacob on; she feels she has nothing left to give

• Jacob doesn’t feel well; Bella gets sick

CHAPTER 10
 

• Jacob never calls to say he is better; Billy won’t let Bella talk to Jacob

Bella is told that Jacob has mono and can’t have visitors for a month

• Bella doesn’t handle “alone” well; the hole in her chest is worse than ever

Charlie is worried

• Bella decides to find Edward’s meadow on her own

When she does, the memories there are too painful

• Laurent shows up in the meadow

Laurent knows the Cullens are gone; Bella hears Edward’s warning voice;
Laurent is thirsty; he says he’ll kill Bella quickly, that it will be better than what Victoria has planned for her, that Victoria wants to torture Bella in revenge for Edward killing James

• Five huge wolves appear; Laurent runs away; the wolves follow

CHAPTER 11
 

• Bella is terrified to know that Victoria is coming for her; she is worried about Charlie

• Bella realizes what has happened to Jacob—Sam has gotten to him

Bella drives to La Push to see Jacob; she talks first to Quil, who is worried he will be next

• Jacob is angry; he says his problem is all the bloodsuckers’ fault; he is not good enough to be Bella’s friend anymore

• Bella is alone again

CHAPTER 12
 

• That night Bella hears a sound outside her window; she is sure Victoria has come to kill her, but it is Jacob

Jacob has come to apologize for breaking his promise; Bella is tired and upset; Jacob cannot tell her his secret but hopes she can guess; he tells her she needs to remember the Quileute legends he talked about

• In a dream Bella sees Jacob turn into a werewolf

Bella realizes that her only human friend isn’t human after all

• Charlie goes out with a group of men to kill the wolves

CHAPTER 13
 

• Bella goes to warn Jacob and to ask if he can try not to be a werewolf

• Jacob is relieved that Bella doesn’t hate him

Jacob explains that the wolves protect people from vampires; they killed Laurent, and they’re trying to catch Victoria, but they don’t know what she is after; Bella tells Jacob that Victoria is after her

• Jacob calls a meeting with the wolves; Bella learns that wolves hear one another’s thoughts

Bella says Edward can also read minds

CHAPTER 14
 

• Bella meets the wolf pack

Paul loses control; Jacob phases on the fly; they fight; Jared and Embry take a shaken Bella to Emily’s house

• Jacob, Paul, and Sam return; they make plans to protect Bella and Charlie, and to kill Victoria

CHAPTER 15
 

• Bella spends most of spring break in La Push, while the wolves patrol the area

Jacob tells Bella the good things about being a wolf: warmth, fast healing, speed; Bella tells Jacob about her scar, about how Edward saved her from James, and about Alice’s and Jasper’s talents

• It hurts Bella to talk about the Cullens

Jacob promises to take Bella cliff diving for some fun but ends up having to follow a new trail left by Victoria

• Bella is lonely and frustrated; she decides to cliff jump alone

She hears Edward’s voice, then jumps; the fall is exhilarating—the water is the danger; Bella is tossed around beneath the surface; Edward’s voice commands her to keep swimming, keep fighting; Bella senses she is going to die and is happy to have Edward’s voice with her at the end; Bella’s last thought is
Goodbye, I love you.

CHAPTER 16
 

• Jacob pulls Bella from the water and resuscitates her

Sam is there, but Jacob tells him to get back to the hospital; Jacob tells Bella that Harry Clearwater has had a heart attack

• Jacob takes Bella to his house; they both rest

Bella remembers
Romeo and Juliet
: If Romeo left Juliet, could she love Paris? Wouldn’t Romeo want her to be happy?

• Billy Black comes home; Harry has died

Jacob takes Bella home, embraces her; Bella wonders if she can love Jacob enough, and make him happy; she knows if she kisses him, the decision will be made

• Jacob smells a vampire and rushes to get Bella away

Bella sees Carlisle’s car and demands to go back; Jacob feels betrayed

CHAPTER 17
 


Bella goes into her house, sees Alice and runs into her arms

Alice is confused—she saw Bella throw herself off a cliff; Bella assures Alice she was not trying to kill herself, just having fun cliff diving; Bella explains that Jacob Black saved her; Alice did not see Jacob in her vision
