Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, he worked as a theatre director and playwright, journalist and composer before devoting himself to literature. His musical partnership with the legendary Raul Seixas resulted in songs that have become classics of Brazilian rock music. In 2002, he was elected to Chair 21 of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
