Tomas gently, almost lovingly, placed the leather ligature around Bovind's neck and pulled it tight.

‘Answer me truthfully now or I will kill you anyway.’

Bovind started to speak. It was almost inaudible but there was a sound, an answer was given. He sank to his knees, his hands clasped in supplication.

‘Louder! Do you believe?’

‘Please, please, please, don't do this, Tomas.’

‘Do you believe?’

‘No!’

Erasmus looked away. He could hear the sounds of Bovind choking, his broken oesophagus, rattling like a tin filled with stones.

When he looked back Bovind was dead, his face an alabaster death mask. Tomas was standing over him as though inspecting him for signs of life. Tomas let the ligature fall onto Bovinds corpse where it coiled like a snake.

Tomas moved towards Rachel.

Erasmus ran forward putting himself between him and her.

Tomas looked blankly at Erasmus, his eyes were dark.

He put his hand in his pocket and removed a small shiny object. He held his hand out and nodded. Erasmus extended his hand and accepted the gift. It was a small bronze pendant on a silver chain. Erasmus recognised it as the one he had dug up in the pool. Jenna ran up to him and grabbed it out of his hands.

She screamed as she recognised Stephen's St Christopher.

Tomas’ face remained impassive.

‘You will find Stephen buried under the
Everlong
, in the pool where he killed me all those years ago.’

Tomas walked towards the door and then out into the night.

Erasmus watched him go.
