Alana extended a hand to Rachel. Alana's hands were shaking slightly as Rachel held them for a brief few moments.
Rachel saw Alana glance at Zarif, as if seeking an explanation for what she had just witnessed. Rachel looked at Zarif and saw the hint of a triumphant smile crease the corner of his mouth. Zarif's gaze flickered toward Rachel, and she knew in an instant what he was about to say.
Zarif turned to Rachel, his hand still resting firmly against her back. "Alana. I'd like you to be the first to know the wonderful news."
Alana's eyes narrowed. She glanced at Rachel, a hint of both anger and admission of defeat in the look.
Rachel looked toward Zarif and saw the anticipation on his face.
Zarif looked at Rachel as he prepared to speak, and there was such pride on his face that Rachel was momentarily taken aback. But, she knew she really shouldn't have been surprised at the way he was looking at her as he started to say the most amazing thing he'd said in his life.
"I'd like to announce that Rachel has agreed to become my wife."
Alana's face turned a sudden, deadly white. Rachel saw the woman glare at her and then at Zarif. The servant, Irina's face turned a similar pale color. Whatever words were about to emerge from Alana were cut off by Zarif crushing Rachel hard against his side.
"Isn't it wonderful," he said. Was he reveling in this?
Alana sighed and seized control of herself. "I'm very happy for you, Zarif," she said, although everything in her tone announced that she was anything but pleased to have finally lost Zarif.
Zarif looked at Irina. The servant's body had stiffened visibly, but she too was battling with self-control, eager to appease the sheikh too whom she obviously owed some allegiance for her place as head of the household staff.
Irina seemed to gain some measure of composure. She nodded toward Zarif and Rachel. "I'm very pleased to hear such happy news, Sheikh Zarif." Irina gazed at Rachel "And to you, ma'am. I'm happy to hear such wondrous news. I'm sure you and Sheikh Zarif will be very happy together."
It might take a while, but Rachel knew she would eventually bring Irina around to seeing the truth. That the sheikh who stood by her side had chosen Rachel and not Alana to be his bride, to be his companion, to be his lover.
Alana glanced at the very expensive watch on her wrist. "I must be going." She nodded to Zarif and Rachel. "I'm very happy for you both. I'm sure you both have a wonderful future to look forward to. Now, of you'll excuse me, I must get back to Qazhar city."
"But you wanted to discuss something?" Zarif asked.
Alana shook her head, saying nothing. Rachel could see the acceptance in Alana's expression. She knew now that the past was the past. That there were going to be no more opportunities for games with Zarif. Not now that Zarif well and truly belonged to the English rose he had claimed and was so obviously determined to make his wife.
Alana headed off, leaving Irina standing awaiting instruction.
"Can I get you anything Sheikh?" Irina said and then she looked at Rachel. "Ma'am?" she added looking calmly at her soon-to-be new mistress. The newest princess of Qazhar.
Zarif shook his head and then turned to Rachel.
"No, Irina. I think I have everything I need," he said with a grin. "What about you, Rachel?"
Rachel looked at the man who would soon be her husband; the man who had turned her world upside down; the man who loved her.
The man she loved.
Rachel smiled at Zarif. "No, Irina. I think I have everything I need."
