CHAPTER
EIGHTEEN

ADONIA

Bassam took him to ground three days ago and I’ve sat in these desecrated surrounding waiting for him to come back to me. News reporters and police have been in a constant flurry over the compound as scientists try to explain the natural phenomenon that occurred.

I’ve blurred them all out and remain locked on his grave feeling for any sign from him. Bassam brought us to the tip of the highest peak untouched by the wrath of Mehi and buried them deep below the icy surface.

I no longer feel the cold around me, numbing my skin. The urge to feed or drink left while I watched the earth cover them over. It was as though I watched my own grave swallow me up.

The
connect that I have with him is terrifying. I feel like I’ve died inside—like all my will has just vanished. I’m beginning to understand the depth and reality of our connection. It is destiny. We were melded together in the beginning and have been searching for each other ever since.

He’s the only air I breathe and no
t having him by my side has crippled me. I watched as he destroyed her and also part of himself. The terrifying moments before she turned to ash will be emblazoned in my memory.

She’s destroyed so much in her existence and has conquered many battles but Khai defeated her but at what price? What is he can’t heal? What if he never comes back to me?

The thought of that reality sends coldness through me that no fire could ever warm.

The sun is rising on the fourth day and the frigid air nips my skin through the thin clothing covering me. I can hear the birds waking for the day and singing high above my head. The faint
trickling of the snow falling from the branches fills the silence of the forest.

I just want to dig through the earth with my bare hands to get to him. I need to feel him, his arms around me his breath against me. I need it like I need air to breathe.

I feel the ground begin to vibrate under my frozen feet. The hum of electricity in my body fills my ears as I feel the pull in my stomach. He’s here.

My heart breaks into a sprint and I fall on my hands over his grave screaming and pleading for him. When the dirt starts to part and I feel the warmth rise from the brown mound of earth I tilt my head back and thank God that he’s brought him back to me.

Faster than my eyes can compute the dirt burst and the wind from his flight whips my hair around my face. My eyes are searching for him but seconds later he is around me pulling me close.

The calm spreads through us both and
I feel the strength rolling off of him as he holds me so tight I can’t breathe. But I don’t care I want to crawl inside him, to get even closer.

The warmness coming from him finally sates the coldness in my body and I begin to feel the effects on my system. My fingers and toes burn as they begin to thaw and my head aches from the loss of sleep and nutrition. I can feel the unsteady beat of my heart.

Khai pulls back and I get the first glimpse of those violet eyes and everything melts away.

He cups my face, “I need to care for you,” he says alarmed, “We’ll find clothes at the nearest house and I want to get you back home and heal you.”

Before I can respond we are in flight rushing over the trees below. I just bury my head into his neck and hold onto him not ever wanting to be out of his arms.

The next thing I know I am standing in the middle of someone’s bedroom and Khai disappears into a closet. Seconds later he is dressed and carrying a large jacket and pants with a pair of boots.

He dresses me quickly then takes me back in his arms before we disappear out into the frigid air again. The warmth from his body is soothing as he radiates all around me.

Minutes later we arrive at the hangar where his plane is taxied off the runway. He sets us down beside a building and we drift to the ground with ease.

He pauses briefly before he turns the corner and quickly carries us onboard the plane. When we duck through the door his pilot and crew scan us and each have looks of shock on their faces.

Khai takes me dire
ctly back to the bathroom and sits me on the stool. He turns back and I hear him snap, “Get us back to New York City. I want us in the air immediately.”

He comes back to me and turns on the shower
. The steam quickly fills the small space and he begins to strip my clothes. With each layer he peels off I feel the burn of my skin.

Finally he undresses and pulls us into the warm cascading water. The shock of the heated water sears my frozen skin and feel like I am standing under a wall of fire.

He begins running his hands in firm strokes all over my body distributing the blood flow and increasing my circulation. My skin starts to accept the temperature change and the burn is replaced with tremors.

My entire body is shaking and I can’t control it. It’s from deep within and moves to every cell buried beneath my skin.

Khai cages us against the shower wall and I feel the heat coming from his chest and spreading down the length of his body.

Finally my body calms and I feel the fatigue spread over me. I just want to sleep. Khai pulls the soap and washes me all over then shampoos my hair before he shuts the water and wraps me in a
plush robe.

He carries me to the back office and places me on the sofa. I look up at him, “Please stay,” I whisper, “Just don’t leave me again.”

He pulls a bag from a closed door and quickly pulls on a pair of jeans and a sweater then sits beside me and pulls my head onto his lap.

“Sleep. Please,” he says stroking my hair, “I’m never leaving, Adonia.” He places a kiss to my temple. “Sleep.” He whispers and my brain slowly shuts down and I drift to sleep.

Her face flashes to mine and I scream seeing the twisted look of pleasure as she grips my head between her stone hands.

His hands circle me and pull me up, “It’s a dream, Adonia.” He says into my ear, “She’s gone. Finished. She can’t hurt you beautiful. I swear to you.”

His voice calms me and I close my eyes allowing my breathing to slow down. I can feel the sheen of sweat covering my body but I’m cold. It’s soul deep.

We remain silent the rest of the flight. My thoughts consumed by our new reality. It feels as though years have passed in a matter of days. I wonder what my parents are thinking. I haven’t attempted to contact them and I know they are frenzied with worry.

He shifts me from his lap and walks to his desk then pulls a phone from the drawer. He hands it to me. “Yes. You should call them. They’ve probably issued some sort of report for you with the authorities. It can cause unneeded attention.”

I blink several times at his
detached tone. He sounds so cold and lifeless. His face twists with confusion then I see the light bulb flicker to life, “This is something you must get used to Adonia. You are mine and there won’t be a moment spent out of my sight.” His eyes blaze across the space between us, “I’m am your eternal family, Adonia. Me. You belong to me and no one else.”

It’s
like a slap across the face. It sounds as though he wants to sequester me from the outside world including my parents. The thought of never seeing them again sends shivers of fear through my veins.

I can’t live a life like that. Constantly
leered over and owned. My parents and my brothers are everything to me.

“I am your everything, Adonia.” He says abruptly.

I stand and move closer to him. “You do not fucking own me. I decide whether my path includes you or not and right now I’m leaning more toward the not fence.” My breath is crashing in and our of me as I roll on, “THAT is something YOU need to understand. To be with me you will have to accept my family and a life outside of you. Period. You will not railroad me into a submissive existence. I’ve lived my entire life independent of anyone else’s opinions and I’m not going to start faltering on that now. You are either with me or against me, you decide. Right now.” I meet his glare with my own anger filled one.

For the first time the look on his face scares me. His eyes are burning with such fierceness that if looks could kill I would take my last breath.
He steps closer and I instinctively stumble back.

He stops and closes his eyes taking a deep breath then peers back at me but this time his face has softened. “Don’t be frightened of me, Adonia. Never worry that I would ever harm you.
The fact that I made you feel that makes me seethe at myself. Forgive me.” His hand stretches between us and I slowly raise mine to place it in his palm.

When I touch his skin electricity shoots through my body and straight to my heart. It feels like home.

He pulls me into his arms and tucks me under is chin. His warmth envelops me and calms me instantly.

“You must eat, love. I can taste the chemicals circulating in your body
trying to find nutrients to carry to your organs. The level of dehydration you are in is dangerous. You are still mortal.”

He wraps his hand around mine and walks us down the aisle to the main cabin. A silver tray is sitting on the table between the last two seats. I walk over and sink down finally feeling the ravenous rumbling of my stomach when I smell the contents.

Basil and rosemary drift up my nose and I close my eyes at the delicious scent. Khai takes the lid off and I see two pieces of poached salmon with a side of roasted potatoes and sautéed greens.

I
unwrap my silverware and take the first bite. It is the best taste I’ve ever had. When I fork another bite quickly Khai rests his hand over my forearm, “Slowly, love. Let your body adjust. You haven’t eaten in days and if you over feed it won’t stay down.”

I nod and reach for the glass of water trying not to gulp the entire contents all at once. Slowly my stomach begins to expand allowing for more food. Over the course of an hour I manage to eat nearly half the contents before I realize I can’t eat another bite.

I can feel Khai’s burning gaze on me and he’s watching me like a hawk.

I turn to him
and place my napkin on the table, “Not a fleck of garlic. I’m guessing you penned the menu this evening.”

He laughs loud and finally relaxes against his seat drinking me in with his eyes. “Our eternity is going to be an amusing one and I can’t tell you how pleased that makes me. I realize just how boring my life has been over the span of eighteen hundred years. You bring it to life with vibrancy. I absolutely cherish you.”

I grin, “I bet you won’t be singing that tune after a few years.”

His eyes are scorching as he says, “I’ll never tire of you, Adonia. And if I could crawl inside you I would. I will spend my days making your body yearn for me, for the release that I plan on working it to every minute of the day.”

I swallow at the thought. If there is death by sex I’ll be a goner in a week.

His face splits in two smiling, “Oh, die you will never do but I will take you to heaven every day.”

I gape at him. The man is a walking orgasm. I squirm in my seat; “You certainly know how to wipe an entire Christmas list clean. Santa should put you on the payroll because his job is done.”

His laugh causes him to shake in his chair. I revel in the sight of him. His long lean frame is relaxed in the chair with his
legs crossed and his arms leisurely hang across the armrests. I can see the outline of his muscled chest beneath the thin sweater. His nipples peak through and I am suddenly resisting the urge to bite and lick one.

My eyes drift further down and when they land on the evidence of his arousal I have delicious memories of how he fits me so perfectly.

Our last union was in the back office. He held me against the wall, his hands pinned mine above our heads and my face pressed against the cool surface of the wall as he took me from behind.

It was delicious sweet
ecstasy. Suddenly I’m out of the chair and moving down the narrow aisle in his arms.

He closes the door behind me and sets me down. His hands blur over my body as he peels me out of my robe. His clothes disappear from his body and he lowers his mouth to mine sweeping his hands over my breasts and moaning into my mouth as my nipples harden under his touch.

He growls and nips my lower lip as he sits me on the corner of his desk and pulls me to the edge. His fingers find my entrance and I lay back moaning. He caresses me slowly then I feel him sink into me and the fullness is intoxicating.

His hips rock
side to side as he plunges deeper causing me to gasp as he slides all the way in hitting my wall. He leans in and brushes his cool silky tongue across my jaw and slides to my ear.

I’m going to make your body burn for me, Adonia.” He hisses in my ear, “I want to hear you beg me to stop when your body wrings with release.”

He holds me in place with his hand on my neck as he pounds into me. I can feel my body building and it is barreling up my spine surging between my legs. He leans down and licks my lip before he slips his tongue into my mouth and rolls over mine in pace with his movements.

It’s enough to send me over the edge. The tremors rock me as I scream his name and shudder underneath him. He rolls deeper pulling my hair as he rocks into me.
