“What is it?” She wrapped her fingers around his flexed bicep. “Talk to me.”

“Let’s go get Ethan right now.”

“Okay. Summer vacation is the time for fun.” Confused, she puzzled over his odd behavior. Mr. Never rattled was struggling.

“Good.” He nodded his head once, a hard stab of the jaw. “Good. I need to talk to him.”

“He’d like going to the park.”

“That’d work. I’m crazy about him. You know that. Right?”

“I do. And he loves you. You’re his hero.”

“Oh yeah?” He shifted so they were facing each other.

“Yeah.” She put all her conviction into that one word.

The corners of his mouth curved into his special smile.

“What about his mom?”

“Since when do you need reassurance?” She puzzled at his questions. “How else can I show that you’ll always by my hero?”

“I can think of a few ways. You can marry me. Become Mrs. Leigh Noble.”

Her heart swelled, pounded, ricocheting wildly off the walls of her chest. Love for him brought tears to the surface. She’d prayed to hear the very words he was struggling to say.

“There’s nothing I want more.”

“And I want to be Ethan’s father. A real one. By adopting him.”

“I’d love you to be his father.” Tears slid down her cheeks.

“Then we should go talk to Ethan.” Emerald eyes bore down on her face. “What do you think he’ll say to you both becoming Nobles?”

Leigh unhooked her seat belt, leaned over, and captured his lips with hers. “He’ll be thrilled.”

“Thank God,” J.T. sighed. The nerve in his jaw stopped jumping.

“Wait,” Leigh teased. “You said ‘a few ways,’ which I’ve always thought meant more than two.”

“I need help justifying buying this Explorer. An SUV is really too big a car.” He gave her a full-mouth smile. “That is, unless a guy’s got a family.”

“You traded your Corvette for us?”

“Yes, ma’am, I did.”

Her heart filled with love. Expanded. Grew in her chest. Bordered on exploding. This four-word-speaking, perpetually scowling loner wanted her and Ethan to be his family. Wanted to build a life with them. Wanted forever.

She could live with forever.

A word about the author...

Author of
The Green-Eyed Doll
, Jerrie hopes you’ll enjoy reading
The Last Execution
as much as she enjoyed writing the story. Married, she and her husband live in Texas eight miles from their daughter and her family. A career in logistics offered Jerrie the opportunity to travel to many beautiful locations, and she revisits them in her romantic suspense novels.

Her characters are always with her, insisting she share their dark, sexy stories with others. She writes alpha males and kick-ass women who weave their way through death and fear to emerge stronger because of, and on occasion in spite of, their love for each other. She likes to torture people, make them suffer, and if they’re strong enough, they live happily ever after.

Jerrie loves sunshine, children’s laughter, sugar (human and granulated), and researching for her heroes and heroines.
