She walked away, slipping into the parade of walkers, vanishing quickly. Swift moved to the wall and leaned on it, looking down at the river’s depths. The water was dark and cloudy now, rippled by the reflection of the path lights. He called Ruth’s number and waited for her voice, remembering that once it had been the only one he longed to hear.
