“So what if it’s true, for if we knew everything, who’d want to live? You’d have nothing to discover.” And with that we called it a night.

I was awakened the next morning by the purring of the two diesel motors under the boat. The drive must’ve been in neutral, the vibrations of the propeller pushing against nothing. Hammond had awakened before me and was out there at the helm. I had a sudden glimpse of backing out of the slip, heading out to the islands where the great whites fed on the fur seals in their zestful frenzy for survival on the open ocean. Then I remembered that wasn’t what boats were for. Hammond was just playing with the motors to make sure they didn’t freeze up. He did that every time we came down. Soon it’d be time to leave.
