She nodded and wiped off her face with a linen strip.
“I feel wonderful.”
“Did ye just—”
“Aye.” She waved her hand dismissing her moment of discomfiture. “‘Twas the ale.”
Magnus shook his head
, still frowning with concern. “I think ’twas something else.”
“What?”
Magnus’ gaze roved over her body and it was then she realized she was completely nude. She shivered, her nipples hardening from both the cold and his voracious regard. His eyes settled on her belly.
“I think ye are with child.”
She placed her hands upon her belly, trying to think back on when she’d last had her monthly course. It was before she’d come to Dunrobin. She felt along the planes and noted that indeed it felt slightly more round. Her eyes widened.
“I think y
ou are right.”
He threw back the covers, revealing his gloriously naked form.
Her face heated as she stared at his engorged shaft and remembered each and every way that organ had pleased her. He stood and walked over to her, pulling her into his embrace.
“When I first thought of us creating a child, it scared me half to death.”
Arbella leaned back, locking eyes with him. “Truly?”
“Aye.
A wee bairn in my arms? I know naught what I would do. To have such a small creature completely dependent upon me… And the dangers of childbirth… The dangers of being a child…” He rested his chin on top of her head and stroked his hands comfortingly along her spine. “I admit I am still afraid, but I am also jubilant, whereas before I would have rather invited the plague.”
“Magnus!” she gasped, then laughed
and pressed close once more.
“Promise me ye will be careful.”
Arbella smiled against the warmth of his chest. His tough exterior peeled back layer by layer to reveal what she’d thought all along—a soft-hearted soul was hidden beneath. He was the most perfect man. A strong, honorable, dependable warrior as well as a loving, sensual husband.
“I’ll be careful.”
“I couldna live without ye.” His voice caught on the last word.
She giggled and playfully
pinched his arm, trying to lighten the emotional load. “How did you ever make it this long?”
He lifted her chin and pressed a soft ki
ss to her lips. “I have no idea,
mo cridhe
.”
She smiled, knowing exactly what his words meant. “You’re my heart too.”

—and trying to deny the powerful desire that eclipses him each time he touches his charge. A rogue of the highest order and a younger son, he has nothing to offer a lady but a broken heart.
Aliah is skeptical of the English noble who has come to take her to her father and sister in Scotland, but she pushes her doubts aside. Without word in months, she must make certain her family is safe, then she can return to England to join the convent she has sworn to pledge her life. But then her escort reveals his true self—he’s a Highlander and his kisses are more seductive than the sweetest of wines.
What is a Highlander to do when he falls for the daughter of his enemy? And what is a lady to do when she cannot trust her heart?
