Then she turned and flung her arms round Nick’s neck. ‘You idiot,’ she said, the joy plain in her voice. ‘What the heck took you so long?’
Emotion swelled in Eva’s throat and her own eyes filled with tears as she watched Nick wrap his arms round his sister in return.
‘Because I was an idiot, obviously,’ he replied, wry amusement in his voice as he slanted Eva a smile filled with pleasure and gratitude. ‘But I’ve come to my senses at last.’
‘Your sister is a goddess. Her children are adorable and her husband is amazing. You do realize that?’ Eva announced as she perched her elbows on her husband’s naked chest and peered down at his closed eyes, excitement about what the
next day promised making sleep impossible. ‘I can’t wait to meet Max tomorrow,’ she said. ‘Although I can’t imagine he can be any cuter than Ally,’ she continued. ‘She certainly took a shine to you,’ Eva added, recalling the way the little girl had insisted on sitting on Nick’s lap all through supper.
Nick grunted, running a lazy palm down her back. ‘Who knew a four-year-old could talk that much?’ he said, his lids remaining firmly closed, but she could hear the pleasure in his voice.
The reunion had been an unqualified success, the two couples beginning to form the bonds of a friendship this evening that Eva already knew would last a lifetime.
‘Junior’s going to get quite a shock,’ Eva said, resting a palm on her belly. ‘When he meets his cousins.’
She stretched, rubbing seductively against Nick in the honeymoon suite bed, which—despite the gruelling journey from Italy that day and the emotionally exhausting evening they’d spent with Ruby and her family—they’d managed to give quite a workout.
‘Don’t you think?’ she prompted, tapping her palm on his cheek to get his attention.
His lids lifted to half mast. ‘Go to sleep, woman,’ he grumbled, his voice thick with exhaustion as he gave her buttocks a firm pat. ‘Or
I’m going to give you another orgasm to shut you up.’
‘Promises promises,’ she teased, snuggling against him.
As his breathing deepened into sleep she touched her fingertips to his forehead, pushed the waves of thick caramel hair back from his brow and smiled.
‘Guess what, Niccolo Delisantro,’ she whispered. ‘I found one of the good guys after all.’
