He kissed her tenderly. The baby
fussed and squirmed and they fawned over her, excited beyond words.

"Hello, Eden
Elizabeth," Marcus touched the dark head. "Hey, I think she's going
to look like me. Finally, a kid that looks like me!"

Kathlyn laughed through her tears.
"There's a whole waiting room full of people out there. Maybe you should
go talk to them."

"I will in a minute."

"No,
now
. My mother
will come barging in here if you don't go out there and tell her that she
finally has a granddaughter."

He kissed her and left her with
the baby. The doctor went on to deliver the placenta.

"She's got a nice cone-head,
Kathlyn," he said. "It's from the suction device, though I've never
seen one quite that pronounced. It should go away eventually."

Kathlyn couldn’t help it; her
blood ran cold. She looked at the baby, squirming on her chest, glad that
Marcus hadn't heard the comment. She tried not to think about the cone-headed
skulls back in the cave. As she gazed at Eden's elongated head, horror clouded
her mind.  They had been so afraid of wings and horns that the cranium defect
had never entered their minds.

Maybe they would never know the
truth, after all.
