In April 2011, fans were saddened to hear of the death of the actress Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, one of the Doctor’s longest serving and most popular companions.

Christopher Eccleston was cast as the Doctor for a new generation. He left after one season, much to the disappointment of many fans.
